THE FOUNDING OF ENGLISH AMERICA PRIVATEERS & PRIVATE COLLECTIONS January 14 through January 21, 2019 NSCDA Exclusive Barbados Pre-cruise Extensions *Free economy airfare is included from most major cities for reservations received before June 30, 2018

THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA PRIVATEERS & PRIVATE COLLECTIONS Expanding on the theme of 2018 Colonies and the Caribbean, we are once again embarking on a small luxury ship to sail through the Caribbean s most elegant islands. The Colonies sat on the outer edge of a booming plantation complex that stretched across the Caribbean, and drew heavily on that colorful region for much of its cultural and economic life. Privateering played an important role in the founding of the American Colonies. Walter Raleigh partially financed his Roanoke settlement by privateering expeditions against the Spanish, and it was no coincidence that Privateer Christopher Newport transported the first permanent colonists to Jamestown in 1607. The power of empires in this era hinged on control of the seas rather than control of the land. From the Great Houses of Barbados (George Washington s home and St. Nicholas Abbey) to the black sand beaches of Montserrat, we will explore islands with a rich assortment of historical treasures, azure waters, beautiful beaches, and lush rainforests. Joining us again each evening on this NSCDA historical journey, by popular demand, will be renowned historian and master storyteller: Dr. Michael Jarvis. I could not get enough of Michael Jarvis lectures, and I felt silly to be thinking of taking notes, so I did not, but I wanted to remember lots of things he told us. I had no idea before this trip that the Caribbean civilization was so wealthy and so connected with our own early American history. - Matte Campbell Dr. Jarvis lectures are fascinating. A real plus for the experience. - Marjorie Turnbull PORTS-OF-CALL Day 1: Jan 14 - Bridgetown, Barbados Day 2: Jan 15 - Mayreau, St. Vincent Day 3: Jan 16 - Basse Terre, Guadaloupe Day 4: Jan 17 - Little Bay, Montserrat Day 5: Jan 18 - Philipsburg, St. Maarten Day 6: Jan 19 - Gustavia, St. Bart's Day 7: Jan 20 - Road Town, Tortola Day 8: Jan 21 - San Juan, Puerto Rico

THE COLONIES AND THE CARIBBEAN II PRIVATEERS & PRIVATE COLLECTIONS PORTS-OF-CALL Day 1: Jan 14 - Bridgetown, Barbados With glamourous coast lines, rolling hills, and lush forests, Barbados is one of the most lively and dynamic islands we ll visit. The island was settled by the English in the 17th century and was the headquarters for the fight against Day 3: Jan 16 - Basse Terre, Guadaloupe Guadeloupe, a department of France, is a butterfly-shape 630-square-mile island, and dual home to purple mountains and impossibly calm beaches. Bass-Terre s (Guadeloupe's western and more lush island) landscape reads as emerald green with sugar cane and large-leafed banana plants, and ascends into velvety, verdant hillsides thick with vinewrapped trees before descending again to the coast. Towns are tidy: one- and two-story concrete houses, with verandas and peaked roofs to repel rain, nestled among vivid, fragrant, flowering bougainvillea. French invaders in the late 1700s. Now, Barbados vibrant capital, and a UNESCO World Heritage site Bridgetown offers world-class shopping, dining, and historic gems all on an idyllic Caribbean island. Day 2: Jan 15 - Mayreau, St. Vincent The small island of Mayreau is the Caribbean s great escape. Mayreau is the smallest inhabited island of The Grenadines, and a secret treasure of peace and tranquility. With no airstrip, you have to sail here, and you will never want to leave. Picture-postcard beaches and bays, a friendly village with a quaint old church, Mayreau is the untouched Caribbean you only hear of in whispers. Day 4: Jan 17 - Little Bay, Montserrat You might be surprised to find that the ancestral home of many Monstratians is Ireland; this tiny Caribbean island is even referred to as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean because its lush, green coastline is very similar to Ireland's. The small island, with a reef off its coast, boasts some of the British West Indies most stunning beaches, many with black sands.

THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA Day 6: Jan 19 - Gustavia, St. Bart's Red-roofed buildings speckle the lush tropical landscape in Gustavia, St. Bart's tiny, relaxed Caribbean capital whose historic sites can be reached in one day of trekking around town. 17th century forts line the harbor, from Fort Karl in the north to Fort Gustaf with its lighthouse and cannons in the south. Near Fort Gustaf is the popular Shell Beach, where beachcombers rove for sparkling shells. The town's many duty-free boutiques boast everything from unique Day 5: Jan 18 - Philipsburg, St. Maarten This 37-square-mile island, ringed with white sand beaches, has been living with a split personality since 1648, when it became the smallest parcel of land to be peaceably shared by two countries: France and the Netherlands. When you visit St. Maarten, the Dutch side in the south, it bustles with sprawling resorts, wide boardwalks, lively beach bars, home goods to artisanal crafts to luxury brand, while cozy cafes offer views over the harbor. Day 7: Jan 20 - Road Town, Tortola We ll be visiting Tortola s capital, Road Town, also known as The Small Town with a Big heart. Tortola, or Turtle dove in Spanish, is a lush mountainous island home to historic architecture and modern luxuries. Road Town and late-night casinos. Meanwhile, sleepy French St. Martin, with its harbor full of brightly colored boats and houses built up into the cliffs, is reminiscent of a Mediterranean fishing village. This is a day for relaxing and enjoying the beauty of the Caribbean. itself, once a pirate haunt, is now home to Botanic Gardens and brimming with restaurants, shops and elegant boutiques. Day 8: Jan 21 - San Juan, Puerto Rico Until the eighteenth century, Spain ignored Puerto Rico in favor of its mainland colonies, preferring to gear its fragile economy to the production of coffee and cattle rather

THE COLONIES AND THE CARIBBEAN II PRIVATEERS & PRIVATE COLLECTIONS than sugar. As the Caribbean became a cockpit for naval warfare during the 1700s, the island became an increasingly important military outpost. The French, English, and Dutch made numerous but unsuccessful attempts to conquer the island. To guard against these incursions, the Spanish constructed the many forts and ramparts still found. During the American Revolution, Puerto. THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA OPTIONAL TOURS AND PRIVATE DINNERS IN BARBADOS Dinner at Lancaster Great House A historic Baradian plantation residence, Lancaster House is renowned for both its colonial charm and iconic boutique meals set in the period-style home outfitted with Bush Hill House, for two months in 1751. The handsome Georgian-style house has been restored and furnished as a typical, but not luxurious plantation residence of the mid- 18th Century. St. Nicholas Abbey Tour and Dinner St. Nicholas Abbey's great house, built by Benjamin Berringer in 1658, is one of just three Jacobean style mansions remaining in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the finest historic sites in Barbados. Hunte s Garden Visit Situated in the center of Barbados rainforest, at the end of old Castle Grant Plantation where sugar cane used to be processed, Hunte s garden will be sure to excite antiques. Set among mature mahogany and fruit trees, and tucked in between beautiful gardens, dinner at the Lancaster Home is the perfect welcome to an incredible island. Dinner with George Washington at George Washington s House Spend dinner by candle light with our private expert on Barbadian history, as we gain even more insight as to Barbados in the mid eighteenth century. Tonight we ll start with a brief cocktail reception followed by a tour of the home, then gather in the dining room for a multi-course dinner with a string quartet performing period pieces. Tour George Washington's House and Tunnels The George Washington House is the only house outside even the most seasoned gardener. The garden offers a multidimensional experience with lush gardens, towering trees, and flowering plants all coupled with indigenous birds calling out and flying through the garden. the USA where George Washington ever resided.
