Slopes & Trails November 2015 www.buckridgeskiclub.org U P C O M I N G P R O G R A M S C L U B N E W S & N O T E S Mark your calendar for our regular program meeting dates. It's always the second Wednesday of the month at 8 pm. November 11: Join us as Buckman s Ski & Snowboard presents the latest technologies for this year s ski and board gear including skis, bindings, boots, helmets, and goggles December 9: Our annual Holiday Social and Wick's Fashion Show. BYOB and a little dessert to share. Payment due by Dec 2; more info on p January 13: Winter board meeting. No program, but members welcome to attend and socialize. February 10: Pre-Valentine wine tasting with Dave Singer. Come out and find a good wine to share with your sweetie! Dave Singer will describe the wines we are tasting. Bring a bottle of your favorite! March 9: MEETING CANCELLED! The Board will be off skiing. You should be too! April 13: Learn about paddling with EMS. Election of officers. May 11: Final meeting of the year. Season recap and preview of next year s schedule. July? (TBD): Summer board meeting and picnic. Open to all members; details to come. Send any ideas for programs to MaryAnn Thomas (mathomas476@gmail.com) Don t forget our annual holiday social! It will be held on our regular meeting place on the regular date this year (2nd Wednesday - December 9.) Details and reservation form on page 4. We had a big turnout at the October meeting to see Ed Sobelewski s presentation on his recent trek to Everest base camp in Nepal. Despite some technical glitches, it was a fascinating program. A beautiful, colorful place in one of the most remote inhabited regions of the planet, where roads are meant for foot and animal traffic only. Ed was there when a major earthquake rocked the region. When we complain about losing power for a couple of hours, it was painful to see how much of a recovery effort will be needed to restore what little the residents had there. At the board meeting it was decided to cancel the March 2016 regular meeting since all the majority of the board would be away skiing. Finally, remember to renew your Membership! If you haven t yet you missed the early bird discount, but there is still time to renew without re-instatement charges. Renewal form is on page 5 or on the website. L O D G E U P D A T E Fall in the air means its time to schedule our work party at the Woodbridge Lodge to get it in shape for the coming ski season. The work party date has been set for the weekend of November 13-15. The usual maintenance chores will need to be done: general cleaning, dusting, and mopping laundering of bed covers and dish (Continued on page 4)

Slopes & Trails Page 3 A C T I V I T I E S & T R I P S SKIING Our Jay Peak trip is full! We tried to accommodate all who were interested, but could not secure additional hotel rooms. A few folks have been placed on stand-by, but unless we are notified of room availability by December 15 there will be not additional rooms. Don t let that dampen your enthusiasm - the weekend we return from Jay - March 11 to 13 - is an EPSC Council Appreciation weekend at Mount Snow. Make a reservation at the Lodge and take advantage of deeply discounted lift tickets. More details under EPSC News. For folks looking to travel west, the EPSC Winter Carnival will be held Jan 16 thru 23 at Big Sky, Montana. Big Sky is one of the premier resorts in North America. If you are interested in experiencing one of the best big mountain resorts, you can join the EPSC Melting Pot trip - see the flyer at: www.easternpaskicouncil.org/15/images/epsc_winter_ Carnival_2016_at_Big_Sky_-_EPSC_Melting_Pot_Trip_Package.pdf or check our trips that may be available through participating EPSC ski clubs. EPSC NEWS Sunday, November 8 - save the date for the annual Philadelphia Ski + Snowboard Expo and Auction from 2 to 5 pm in the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 260 Mall Boulevard, King of Prussia. This annual event kicks off the winter season with representatives from many of North America s top winter destination resorts and day areas represented at the show! The event is free and open to the public to provide an up close and personal look at resort properties, apparel and accessories, equipment, retailers and services, as well as a chance to meet other regional ski/snowboard club. A special highlight of the show is the annual auction and fundraiser for the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council (EPSC). Join us and get your bid in on tons of cool items - from unique vacation packages to lift tickets available during Live and Silent auctions held throughout the day. Plus many door prizes! Ample free parking at the hotel. Learn to Ski: EPSC will again be offering its Learn to Ski program for first time skiers. This is targeted to adults and older teens, and will be held at Spring Mountain for three Monday nights from 6.30 to 8.30 beginning the second Monday in January. If you have a friend or family member who has been hesitant to try it s a good way to see if its for them. At this time it is for skiing only. Check the EPSC web site for further details. HIKING 2015 FALL SHORT HIKE SCHEDULE UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 25 The meeting place is at Granite Run Mall, Route 1 entrance traffic light, next to the McDonalds Restaurant. Drive in the entrance street and park on the back side of the curb in the mall lot. Meeting time is 9:15 to arrange car pools and parking, leaving promptly at 9:30am. Please bring lunch, dress in layers w/small back pack and $ for driver(s). Please call or text leader prior to hike, either the night before or day of hike, before 8:45am. This is a big help to arrange carpools, communicate weather cancellations, and if it is more convenient to meet at a trailhead. Hikes are approximately 5-7 miles and easy to moderate in difficulty. Consider wearing comfortable hiking shoes and bringing extra shoes since some hikes can be muddy (many trails are also used for horseback riding and dog walking!). Questions?
