2015 Your Next Destination, KOREA! South Korea is Asia s fourth-largest economy it has a market economy ranked 14th by nominal GDP in 2013 (listed by the IMF). The economy is growing - BBC statistics show the economy has expanded by 3.9% in the first quarter of 2014 (BBC News 24th April 2014). Financial Times also reports that in 2014 South Korea has recorded the fastest economic growth in 3 years. South Korea s geographic position in East Asia, is an ideal launchpad to China s massive market and low-wage labour supply, and Japan s high technologies and sophisticated consumers. According to a report published by PRNewswire in 2014 (Construction in South Korea Key Trends and Opportunities to 2018), The construction industry increased at a 2.43% CAGR from 2009-2013 and is expected to post a forecast of 3.96% CAGR in 2014-2018 period. One of the drivers of the industry growth is due to hosting of 2018 winter Olympic Games. Significant investment are being made in the country s infrastructure. In 2013, the South Korea government announced its plan to invest US$108.6 billion on various roads, rail and other infrastructure projects across the country. Secondly, the commercial construction market is booming supported by a number of hotel and resort development projects. 20 Century Fox is planning to construct a USD$3.5billion theme park in Changwon city. Moreover, the French hotel Group Accor SA is in the process of constructing a 300-room hotel in Seoul. Last but not the least, South Korea s residential housing market showed signs of recovery toward the beginning of 2014. According to the Korean statistical information services, the housing purchase price index grew by 1.4% in the first quarter of 2014, the government also plans to cut taxes on property purchases. Meanwhile, the government put forward policies on supporting renovation on public and residential buildings that also drives the growth of the residential housing market.
