Cumberland County Hiking Marathon Trail Descriptions 8/28/2017 Welcome to the 2017 Cumberland County Hiking Marathon. As you hike these trails you will enjoy a wide variety of terrain and geographical features. We hope this marathon takes you places that you would not normally go and that you have positive experiences along the way. We hope you enjoy hiking these trails but please stay on the trail when hiking and respect private property in residential communities. Carry plenty of water at all times and watch your step it is easy to twist an ankle on rocks and tree roots. ets are permitted on all trails but please pick up after your dog if it fouls the trail-bed. Fairfield Glade Trails 1. Overlook Trail (1.9 miles) This trail has been extensively rerouted since the 2016 Hiking Marathon to eliminate grassy roads and a logging road from the route. From the eavine Road/Stonehenge 4-way stop, take eavine going east for half a mile. Turn right onto Westchester drive. After 3.0 miles, just after passing Dorchester Golf Club, turn left onto Windsor Road. Take the second right onto Wimberley Road then immediately turn left onto the gravel road. This road ends at the Overlook parking area and trailhead. After parking your vehicle and enjoying the views from the overlook enter the trail on the left. This trail is a lollipop layout...hike the stem, go around the lollipop loop in either direction, than hike the stem back to your car. 1

2. Fairfield Glade HGR Loop (Hemlock-Good Samaritan-Rotherham) (3.0 miles) From the eavine Road/Stonehenge 4-way stop take eavine Road east for half a mile and then turn left on to Catoosa Boulevard. After about 1.2 miles turn left on to Rotherham. After 0.6 miles you will come to the parking lot on the left at the end of Lake Dartmoor. This is the trailhead for both the Hemlock Trail and the Rotherham Trail. We strongly recommend that you hike this loop in the counter-clockwise direction as marked on this map as this avoids climbing up the very steep Rotherham Trail. roceed along the end of the lake to the trailhead sign for the Hemlock Trail. Follow the trail, past the majestic Hemlock tree for which the trail was named, and after half a mile it crosses Rotherham. After another third of a mile it comes to Catoosa Boulevard and parallels the road for a quarter of a mile before turning back into the woods where it goes behind Bluff View Terrace and climbs upwards for nearly half a mile to the Good Samaritan Trail. Turn left and follow the trail behind the Good Samaritan assisted living facility for a half a mile until you reach the intersection with the Rotherham Trail. Turn left onto the Rotherham Trail and follow the trail as it descends steeply into the valley. After half a mile the trail turns left along the creek and levels out for an easy walk for the last half-mile to Rotherham parking lot where the hike started. Note: There is alternative parking available on Catoosa Boulevard at the junction with Kingsbridge Lane and also at the water tower near the Good Samaritan facility. 2

3. Library Trail & Seven Bridges Trail (2.8 miles) From the eavine Road/Stonehenge 4-way stop head east along eavine Road for 0.4 miles. Turn right onto Snead. After 0.4 miles turn right onto Lakeview. After 0.3 miles turn right into the Fairfield Glade Library parking lot which is the trail-head. Take the sidewalk along the side of the Library to the start of the Library Trail. Follow the Library Trail for 0.4 miles until it comes out on Lakeview. Cross the road and follow the sidewalk along the Lutheran Church. Cross over Snead and walk on Lakeview Road a short distance until you turn right on to Berlingwood Lane. It starts off as a paved road but becomes a gravel/grassy road after a short distance. 4. McGinnis/Good Samaritan/Canyon Loop (4.2 miles) We suggest parking at the North Catoosa arking Lot and hiking the loop in the clockwise direction.(this avoids the long climb up the Canyon Trail.) Take eavine Road going east for half a mile and turn left on to Catoosa Boulevard. Follow the road for 2.8 miles, going past the Good Samaritan facility on the left then heading down hill to the parking lot. McGinnis Trail Leaving the parking lot the trail climbs quite steeply for a short distance to the junction with the Hickory Connector Trail. At the junction turn left and continue along the McGinnis Trail. This trail is quite strenuous with a couple of long steep climbs, but it passes some impressive rock formations. After one and a half miles the trail comes out onto Catoosa Boulevard. Good Samaritan Trail Turn right and follow the sidewalk northwards, across Northridge and you will see the sign where you cross the road and re-enter the woods along the Good Samaritan Trail. You will come across the long boardwalk bridge and shortly afterwards you will reach the junction with the Hemlock Trail on the left. Stay on the Good Samaritan Trail until, after about a mile, you reach the intersection with the Rotherham and Canyon Trails. Canyon Trail Go straight through the intersection and start along the Canyon Trail. This trail, with a couple of exceptions, generally descends for nearly one and a half miles down to Catoosa Boulevard. Cross the road and very soon you will come across the trailhead parking lot on the right. 4

5. Catoosa Sidewalk and Good Samaritan Campus Sidewalks (2.3 miles) ***This Trail is still under construction and will not be finished before the marathon starts. Take extra care while walking this unfinished sidewalk. *** From the eavine Road/Stonehenge 4-way stop take eavine Road east for half a mile and then turn left on to Catoosa Boulevard. After about 1.3 miles turn left into the gravel parking lot, shortly after the Fairfield North sign. Take the newly constructed sidewalk along Catoosa Boulevard, crossing the road at Shawnbury oint. Continue up the hill passing Northridge and then turn left into the Good Samaritan assisted living facility. Once on the campus pick up the sidewalk and follow it as it meanders around the campus. On returning to the entrance return the way you came down Catoosa Boulevard to the parking lot. 5

After another mile turn right on to City Lake Road. There is a large Meadow ark sign on the corner. Follow City Lake Road for 1.4 miles and it deadends at the park marina and office. Enjoy the views across the lake, and maybe use the restrooms at the campsite. Feel free to stop in the office and say Hi to Marlene otter the park manager, then drive back up the entrance road 0.6 miles to the trail-head parking lot which will now be on the right hand side of the road. It is recommended that you follow the signs and hike this 1.7-mile trail in a counter-clockwise direction. It is a very pretty trail with not many uphill sections to be negotiated and many views across the lake. The trail does pass close to the lakeshore so children do need to be supervised. 6

There are no signs to indicate the trail route but there are colored paint marks on the ground. Just look at this map and then take a pleasant stroll in the park. 12. CMS: Short ioneer (2.1 miles) The Cumberland Mountain State ark is very well known and there are plenty of road signs directing you to the park, which is about four miles south east of Crossville on Highway 127. There is plenty of parking in the park but please do not park in the restaurant parking lot as that gets very busy at times. We suggest you park near the boathouse by the new wooden bridge. igeon Ridge Road Swinging Bridge ioneer Short Trail Lake Trail Stone Dam/Bridge Restaurant Byrd Creek ark Office US Route 127 US Route 127 State ark Entrance Wooden Bridge The ioneer Short Trail goes up one side of Byrd Creek and Cumberland Mountain State ark returns on the other side. The trails in the park pass close to water and there are steep drop-offs in many places so children should be supervised. 12
