Around the Creek Message from the SCRS Chair By: Tracy Unger Happy New Year to all the Saprae Creek Residents! It has been a good year to live in the Creek...we saw the cover go over the rink, cleaned our community up not once but twice, fixed up trails, scheduled yoga sessions, hosted many childrens' parties and one ladies night. Saprae continues to be a community with loads of residents participating and enjoying all the activities this community has to offer. Mark the calendar for the Annual General Meeting being held on February 7th. It is a chance to bring forward new ideas of how you would like to see this community develop. I would like to thank Pam Garbin, Michelle Archibald and June Leclair for pulling together an amazing Christmas party. Dennis Gable donated a beautiful Christmas tree which was raffled off to raise money for the food bank. I am grateful to be able to be part of the Saprae Creek Residents Society and can honestly say I really enjoy participating. On that note, I would like to mention that there is still some open shifts to work the Casino on January 19th and 20th. Contact Marilyn Rustad if you are available. SAPRAE CREEK ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING WHEN: Tuesday Feb 7th, 2012 WHERE: Vista Ridge Lounge TIME: 7:30-9pm Get the latest update on what is happening in and around our area and have a chance to join the board of directors!

Councillor s Corner I am just back today (Monday, January 2, 2012) in our fair city from our holiday travels. I hope that you all had a great time over the past two weeks or so connecting with relatives and friends that you do not get to see often enough. It looks like our mild winter is continuing, that is a nice thing in my books. I am looking forward to getting out and trying out the new ice rink here in Saprae Creek; it is an impressive looking structure and I trust ATCO and our friends at Vista Ridge had everything done for the Christmas party, or at least for the New Year s Eve festivities. Rumour is we re going to try and get a pick-up game of hockey going on Thursday nights, looking forward to that happening. Also concerning winter recreation, I understand that a lot of good work is being done on trail grooming, so I trust all cross-country skiers, snowmobilers, hikers, etc. have been able to get out and take advantage of the trails. Thanks to all our very generous volunteers who work on the task of grooming trails, it is very much appreciated. Vista Ridge looked great a month ago when we were out there to take a ride on the newly installed and fully functioning chair lift, what a great facility Vista Ridge has grown in to and thanks to Kevin and his staff for the hard work they put in running it. Some good news for Draper Road residents from the late fall. The deal whereby the RMWB was to receive a lot for building a community centre on the Draper Road has been completed. We can all start making plans to have a facility built that will serve the residents needs for space to get together for a variety of reasons. Marcel Ulliac of the RMWB Land Acquisition department reported that some sub-division approval work was the next order of business concerning moving forward with the community centre plan. So, that is great news and I am sure we all look forward to seeing what we can get done this year with respect to the completion of this long awaited project. I would like to congratulate Trent Obrigewitch, a Saprae Creek resident and business owner with a business located at the airport for being appointed to the Airport Authority board. The Authority is just over a year old and is under thelegal jurisdiction of the federal government, but the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo gets to appoint three members, which basically amounts to one appointment every year. I am sure that Trent will do a great job of representing the interests of the citizens of the entire municipality on this very important board. Concerning our recently concluded board appointment process, I just wanted to tell you how impressed I was that over 90 people applied for the 32 board positions that council was charged with appointing on. It was an incredibly diverse and exceptionally qualified group of people that applied for the various boards, commissions, Part 9 corporate boards and our RMWB boards. Finally, just a couples of reminders: first, on January 19, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the Sawridge Hotel the RMWB Civic Awards for Fort McMurray residents will be presented. Draper Road and Saprae Creek are included in this presentation, so if you have the time to drop in it would be great to see you there supporting our local community award winners. Secondly, please wear one of those reflective vests when you are out and about on our rural roads and trails. I was lucky enough to receive one of these vests at a gift exchange, so I am wearing it every time I go out to walk the dogs, safety first! Thx Al Vinni, Ward 3 Councillor

Contact me for a free consultation to help you achieve your fitness goals for 2012!

Around the Creek For this issue, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Hopefully we get more snow. We have started to groom all the trails. We need more snow to make the trails safer. So with that I would like to let every sledder know to use caution, as some parts of the trails are still rough. Obey speed limits and follow the signs. Use caution in construction areas, especially on the Anzac trail where two pipelines are being installed. Our new connector trail is now open. Please keep our trails clean by taking out what you take in, and don't throw empty cans on the trails. If you have not purchased your trail pass, please do so on our website or at the dealerships. Our trail coordinators will be checking for the trail passes on the trails. Thank you to everyone that purchased their passes, your support is greatly appreciated Memberships are available on-line at www.sno-drifters.org
