Fire & Rescue NSW Firefighter Championship Region West 2 10-11 March 2018 Hosted by Kelso Brigade
THE CHAMPIONSHIP ENVIRONMENT First introduced in 1932, the Firefighter Championship has a very long and proud history. Over the past 86 years, thousands of firefighters have competed in the event which showcases world-class operations and skills. Today, as well as in years gone by, the Championship embodies and reflects the environment in which firefighters operate in. The event focusses on developing, maintaining and enhancing operational skills as well as promoting safety. The Championship is based on FRNSW s guiding principles of respect, integrity, service delivery, courage and safety. These values are an integral part of the organisation s ethos and are the foundation of this competitive event. Aside from the competition events, the Championship also enables FRNSW to promote itself as an effective and efficient emergency service through various displays and demonstrations. It engages with local communities by providing fire safety education to a broader audience, including the business sector. Whilst respecting past traditions, I encourage all participants to embrace the Championship and all that it represents. By continually improving operational capabilities, FRNSW is able to better protect communities from fires and other emergencies well into the future. Assistant Commissioner Rob McNeil AFSM Director of Firefighter Championship www.firefighterchampionships.com P a g e 2

Kelso Fire Brigade Kelso Brigade extends a warm welcome to everyone, hope they enjoy what the Bathurst Region has to offer, and the weekend of competition, friendship and camaraderie. Kelso Brigade is a relatively new station having only commenced operations at 09:00 on the 6 th October 1999 with a crew of 10. Kelso station was formed due to Kelso and Bathurst being separated in times of flood by the Macquarie River and the rapidly expanding residential and commercial development in the Kelso area. The Kelso Championship Team was formed prior to the 2000 State Championship. The team has been very successful winning 3 State Championship Titles and 2 runner-up titles. Most recently the Kelso Team won the last Regional Championship of 2017 hosted by Port Macquarie Brigade. Members of the Brigade, with great support from the Zone Office, have worked tirelessly to ensure this Championship will be extremely successful and enjoyable to competitors, officials, visitors and spectators alike. www.firefighterchampionships.com P a g e 4
Kelso s Duck Rescue The following article appeared in Western Advocate on 2 November 2017: ANIMAL rescues are not unusual for Fire and Rescue NSW crews, but it has been a while since Kelso firefighters have had to jump down a drain to help. The Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crew had been visiting Kelso Public School on Thursday morning when one of the students alerted them to a family of ducks that had fallen into a drain in the playground. Deputy Captain Scott Wilson said he had rescued all sorts of animals in his years with the service but had not been called to a duck rescue in quite a while. He said two FRNSW firefighters volunteered to climb down into the six-foot deep drain to try and locate the ducklings. There were firefighters at separate ends of the drain, he said. We flushed the drain, and with a bit of coercion we got them out. There were nine ducklings. Deputy Captain Wilson said the mother duck had been seen near the drain earlier in the day, but since it could no longer be found the ducklings were taken to a WIRES carer. www.firefighterchampionships.com P a g e 5
