Chapter Director Hello Chapter and Friends, Want to welcome 10 New Members to K2 Country Wings Chapter: Robert & Corie, Dino & Gina, James & Monica, Robert & Aurora, Julie & Cheyenne. Chapter k2 went from 2 members to over 47. Wow! We hit our 1 Year Anniversary this month. Let's continue to ride safely and advance in the levels program. A special thanks to Gloria in helping in our last Gathering. We have such a great group of people that are willing to help on at a moment s notice. Thank you, K2! Seems like we've been fighting the rain on Saturday rides. We got out on a Sunday to ride. We headed to Bill and Roses and had some wonderful food. We continued the unexpected ride up to the Apple Store then back to Sammy's. We had great weather, no more rain and great group. We look forward to our upcoming Rally. Our K2 Country Rally will be on October 14 th in Castroville. Members don t forget there will be a silent auction. We are asking for two to three items per member for auction. Chapter O Rally will be April 8th hope to see a lot of our members attended. Pat and I will be camping overnight so we will be there on Friday and leaving on Sunday morning. For those who can't or don't want to camp hope to see you there Saturday morning. April 27th will be our Regional Rally up in Marshall, Texas. For those who plan on going if weather permits, we will be riding to Rally. Our website is looking very spiffy. I challenge all to look at the new updates Pat is making daily. (Continued next page) 3
(Continued from previous page) We are trying to put an advanced Riders course. Looks like it might be in late May or June. I'll keep trying for dates. Last week, we road to the Motorcycle Museum in Vanderpool, TX. I meet a great Rider named John Wayne. Yes, it s true he still rides a horse. An Iron horse. Very nice gentleman who also rides for the LOST BOYS out of Kerrville Texas. If y'all get a chance ride by their visit and chat with him. John also volunteers up there and can tell you a story or two about the bikes in the museum. A Special Congrats to Dale Tondre who has not been on a bike since April 2009. She did very well on the ride to Stonehedge. The Tondre s look like a well-oiled machine cruising down the road. Thanks guys keep it up. We just took a first aid class last month. We talked about it at the March Gathering and just that quick. I was treating one of our own. It happens that quick. You should always be ready and stay calm. Lucky our team members were there to assist him and drove him home and he's doing better now. First Aid: WE TAKE IT FOR YOU NOT ME! Get involved it could save a life! Chapter K2 sends out a Congratulations to Tom Poplawski, Alamo Cycle Plex. He just completed training with the Department of Public Safety in Riders Education. We look forward in future endeavor s with Tom and Alamo Cycleplex. See Ya Soon! Michael Pineda aka Shrimp Man 4

HUMOR K2 WING N News During a physical, the doctor asked the patient about his daily activity level. He described a typical day this way: Well, yesterday afternoon, wadded along the edge of a lake, drank, escaped from wild dogs in heavy brush, marched up and down several rocky hills, stood in a patch of poison ivy, crawled out of quicksand, jumped away from an aggressive rattlesnake and took four leaks behind a big tree. Inspired by the story, the doctor said, You must be one hell of an outdoors man? NO, he replied, I m just a lousy golfer. 10

TIPS from Donna Ryde Tyme We had some great rides scheduled for March but much needed rain put the damper on a couple of them. However, the sun came out later in the month and gave us some fabulous weekends to get out and see Spring in all its glory! A ride to the Motorcycle Museum in Vanderpool and lunch at Lost Maples Cafe was such a fantastic ride. I saw a flock of turkeys fly across the road right in front of me (far enough away so it wasn't a danger). Something I had never seen. We also saw the three little pigs, albeit lying on their backs with legs straight up in the air. I pity the person who ran into mama pig and her oversized piglets. The twistys and curves were just relaxing...what fun!! Oh, my gosh! A ride through 337 from Bandera to Leaky, up Hwy 83 to Hwy 39 was inspiring. But 39 through Hunt to Ingram was incredible! What a beautiful ride!! A stop at Stonehenge to stretch our legs, then off to Bill's BBQ for some delicious food! The Bent Rim Cafe is always a favorite and I never get tired of riding the Hill Country. (continued from previous page) We always have a blast!!! I have to brag about out K-2 members...they really are awesome and I can't wait until the next gathering and the next ride to spend time with my favorite people!! (continued next page) 16
(continued from previous page) Safety Tyme I ran across this article on line and thought it was worth sharing. It is from the MSF. They always have very informative articles. https://www.msf-usa.org/downloads/group_ride.pdf As hot weather looms it is always a good idea to take a soft insulated bag with an ice pack so that you can pack some water. You may prefer to freeze the bottle of water or I read a good idea of freezing grapes and drop those into the water bottle or just eat the frozen grapes as a chilly snack. Possibilities are limitless. Chilled cherry tomatoes or small carrots are a great snack or fruit that you can keep cool. Whatever your favorite snack, it will keep the "hungries" away until lunch time. We had the opportunity to take a CPR class earlier in March and what an eye opener. When you think about it, you could be the difference between someone surviving an incident or not. Really sobering and a big responsibility. A good first aid kit is always a plus to have on each ride. Ride safe, ride aware and be seen!! Donna Ride Coordinator Chapter Educator 17
K2 SPOTLIGHT Robert and Cori Hanus I ve been riding 35 years plus. I have owned 1996 Honda Aspencade 1200 (current bike), 1984 Honda Aspencade, 1983 Suzuki GS 1100 GL, 1985 Honda Magna 750, Kawasaki 440 LTD, 1978 Honda XL125, various dirt bikes and more. Have ridden most of the United States. Took 2 good-sized trips this last year. One of them was 5580 miles in 13 days from Utopia, Texas. Trip included riding to Ozark Mountains in Missouri. Then over to Smokey Mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway. Then through Carolinas and down Atlantic coast to Key West, Florida. Then across Gulf coast back to Texas. Just in 2016, I rode through 25-30 States. My favorites rides are: 1) Bear Tooth Pass outside of Red Lodge, Montana. 2)Spearfish Canyon Road in the Black Hills of South Dakota. 3) Hwy 16 over Little Big Horn Mountains (Buffalo to Ten Sleep, Wyoming). 4) Medicine Bow Peak with Lake Marie outside of Centennial, Wyoming. 5) Wind River Canyon (Wyoming) 6) Needles Highway in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I am blessed to ride these most every year. Tips with and on the Bike: Ride as little interstate as possible. Generally, I look at maps ahead of time to find the most scenic rides. River Roads and Mountain Roads are my favorite. On a ride from Las Vegas, Nevada to Utopia by way of Rapid City. South Dakota (only about 1500 miles out of the way). I planned a route to get me to Walden, Colorado to meet up with a friend from Laramie. After getting off the interstate and riding 2-lane state highway in Colorado, the road I was riding turned to gravel. Not just gravel, but washboard mountain road with switchbacks. I could have doubled back to the interstate, but that would have taken me at least 4 hours out of my way. I decided to go for it. 29 miles later, I reached pavement again. I am no longer afraid of my friend Mike s mile long rocky driveway that use to scare me. 18

HUMOR Two West Virginia rednecks are out hunting, and as they are walking along they came upon a huge hole in the ground. They approach it and are amazed at the size of it. The first hunter says, "Wow, that's some hole; I can't even see the bottom. I wonder how deep it is?" The second hunter says," I don't know. Let's throw somethin' down there, listen and see how long it takes to hit bottom." The first hunter says, "Heythere's an old automobile transmission over there. Give me a hand, we'll throw it in and see." out what that was all about, an old farmer saunters up. "Say there," says the farmer, "You fellers didn't happen to see my goat around here anywhere, did you?" The first hunter says, "Funny you should ask, but we were just standing here a minute ago and a goat came running out of the bushes doin' bout a hunnert miles an hour and jumped... headfirst into this here hole!!" The old farmer said, "Naw, that's impossible... I had him chained to a transmission. So, they pick it up and carry it over and count one, two, three and heave it in the hole. They are standing there listening, looking over the edge, when they hear a rustling behind them. As they turn around, they see a goat come crashing through the underbrush, run up to the hole and, without hesitation, jump in headfirst. While they are standing there staring at each other in amazement, peering into the hole, trying to figure 20
The Honest Comments of A Co-Rider Learning to ride a bike as a kid was a blast and getting my endorsement even better. I was in control and I could make my bike do whatever I wanted. Learning to be a co-rider, however was much more of a challenge for this A personality. I had to learn how to NOT be in control and to trust my rider to do what he needed to keep us both safe. Co-riders all know, that as soon as you put your gear on, and climb on back of the bike, you are putting your ultimate trust into the person sitting at the helm. The passenger cannot see directly in front of the bike; in fact, is blind between 10 and 2, using a clock as the guide. You learn to blindly feel the bike, to know or anticipate the bike's movements, simply by feeling the muscle movements of the rider, not too unlike riding a horse with no tack. Done well, both riders and the bike become one and have a great ride. Not done well, it puts both riders as well as the surrounding riders and traffic in jeopardy and the ride is notso-great. How do both the rider and co-rider become one with the bike? Practice, practice, practice. Have you ever stopped to think that the rider is also depending on the co-rider for safety? It is so very important that co-riders join the rider at Parking Lot Practices. Feel what the bike does on the slow roll. Have FUN with the rider and make a game of hitting cones, until one day, you ride a flawless course together. Try that U-turn in a safe, judgmentfree zone. Enjoy the camaraderie of other riders and co-riders as all are learning ways to make us safer on the road. See you on the road AND on the pad. 21
