THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE GOLD COAST TREASURE CLUB, INC. VOLUME 36 NUMBER 5 MAY 2011 THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE 7:30 P.M. MAY 12 AT THE WEST PALM BEACH GARDEN CLUB IN DREHER PARK IN WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA OUR CODE OF ETHICS: HAVE PERMISSION AND DO NO HARM MAY MEETING With hurricane season rapidly approaching, now is the time to learn and plan for your hunts for Spanish treasure if the beaches erode. A video will be shown: Hurricane Treasure, 1715 Beach Sites, Locations Revealed. The video is based on a book written by Kevin Reilly (The late owner of Reilly's Treasured Gold in Pompano Beach), Gary T. Rowe & Kevin Maranville. Here is a video that tells you where to go, what to look for and what has been found on the beaches of the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet. Also in the video is an interview of former club member Frank Meade who found an 8 Escudo gold coin after one of the winter storms. Maps will also be available at the meeting. Thanks in advance to our May volunteer refreshment host, Al Schwartz, and to Paul Hamlin for volunteering to stump us with an unusual Mystery Item. JOIN US EARLY AT P.A. BBQ! Several of us get together for dinner and a few laughs in the back room of P.A. BBQ at 5:30 p.m. before each meeting. Please join us for good friends & good food! Park Avenue BBQ & Grille 2401 N. Dixie Hwy (US 1) Lake Worth, Florida ******************************************* MAY CLUB HUNT The Club is looking for individual(s) to host a club hunt this month. You can just choose a neat place to hunt and have members spend a few hours metal detecting. No prizes. Just keep track of who attends and what is found. If you are ambitious and wish to do a planted hunt, Linda will provide items to bury and prizes. SPECIAL GUESTS Visitors from Australia will be attending our meeting. Jo and Carlos of RK Productions will be at the May meeting to set up details for filming our June meeting. The show is currently called "Hamish & Andy's American Gap Year" and is hosted by two Australian comedians (Hamish & Andy). In relation to their trip, they will be traveling to approx 9-10 states in 3 weeks of intense filming covering many stories including the boys participating in some astronaut training at NASA in Houston. As part of the show, the hosts will travel the length and breadth of the US doing their best to learn about unique customs, meet interesting people and discover what it is to live in the home of the brave and land of the free. The hosts don't make fun, take advantage or misrepresent the people they meet, they're always laughing with them, never at them. Tentative plans are for Hamish and Andy to metal detect with Steve and Amy Hamedl, and then they will bring their finds to the meeting to hopefully try out for a "best" prize. Hamish & Andy's Caravan of Courage - USA This was the last show we filmed in the States - it's a little different to the one we're working on now as it was more about the road trip or "the journey" from A to B but it will give you an idea of the boys & the types of stories / adventures they get up to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3evzu6cqzw TREASURER S REPORT (as of 4.27.11): $1900 VISIT OUR WEBSITE! http://www.apex-ephemera.com/gctc/

THANKS A number of those that each year work with the many handicap children want to pass on to the GCTC how much we deeply appreciate your donation each year of foreign coins to hide for the wonderful kids to find with metal detectors during their visit to the camp. All of us find ourselves so very lucky to have such wonderful friends like those of you in the GCTC that care enough for the kids to want to make this activity continue each year. We want you to know that we also teach the foreign student counselors how to continue this activity after our visit with the camp each year. This also has after effects by these same students taking their knowledge back home in a distant country and passing this activity on to that country's similar camps. Again, we thank all members of the Gold Coast Treasure Club for their efforts and donations for this cause and want to mention to the club how much we and WWATS members enjoy your monthly newsletter (I forward each month to the WWATS site for all to read www.wwats.org ) Sincerely, Keith Wills ***************************************** DATES SET FOR CHILDREN'S CAMP HUNT ON JUNE 15 AND 16 Once again we will be making a large number of kids at the Camp very happy showing them how to enjoy the hobby of metal detecting for treasure. As before we sincerely need your help with finding enough foreign coins to hide for those kids. Also toy cars, jewelry and such to spread over the field for them to find too. Please try to mention to your clubs to help with this, it is an ongoing activity throughout the summer for the many kids they see each year. I'm sure we will see some 175 to 200 kids during our two day visit, so anyone that wants to help us with the wonderful kids, you are invited, please come. Thanks so much, Keith Wills. Good Will Ambassadors Performing Random Acts of Kindness Each month, the GCTC recognizes members who provide selfless service to our community. The first time a member returns an item, that individual receives a metal detecting pin (handcrafted by Steve Hoskins) to wear on his or her hat, in addition to a certificate of appreciation. Future returns are recognized by additional certificates. Kudos to all club members who go out of their way to return items to their rightful owners. The actions of each of our Ambassadors of Good Will enhance the public s perception of our hobby and make our club shine! REPEAT AMBASSADORS Returns Recognized at April Meeting Gary Spiroch Cell Phone Jim Sharp Engagement Ring Jim Sharp will be recognized in the Treasure Depot Magazine for his returns. Thanks to Ed D Amato for the delicious refreshments. Radina Malchev provided the Mystery Prize Stumper for April Paul Hamlin had one A Dog Tag. 50/50 Drawing $41 in singles was won by Jim Sharp you gotta play to win! Our program for the evening was provided by the membership the topic How I got started in Metal Detecting. President McNew started off the stories with his own. Gary told of his Air Force days and how he purchased a White s 4100 for $10! Hunted in Europe never found any Roman Coins! John Presslein Back in the 40 s after a rain storm we would go across the street from our home to the park Mom always collected the coins dropped without a metal detector. I purchased a machine for $40 for the kids and we only found seventy-five cents so I decided to buy a White s coin shooter 6000 for $400. Paul Hamlin- Waiting for my son who was in band practice, I watched someone beeping along, he had found a handful of stuff. So my interest was peaked and I started looking in the newspaper in Cleveland, I found one to buy I still have my first gold ring. Ed D Amato 1994 found some pictures of the New Rochelle Playland Park in New York. The location of the Lemonade stand was three feet off the Boardwalk lots of coins! Frank Nash Pauline was given a Bounty Hunter detector by her grandmother when she was ten years old. She actually found a diamond ring with it! So I got into the hobby! Mindy Spiroch My uncle got me interested, I used to screen the sand at the 35 th Street Arcade bringing home about $130 and a Star Safire Ring, which my cousin still has to this day! Stacey delucia I got into metal detecting in 1983 with my husband at the time. We bought a Radio Shack machine for $140 and tried it out, it did not find anything so I gave it up. Then my brother in Virginia Beach got into it big time sending me pictures of diamond rings and unbelievable things he had found! Then I got really serious. Jason Petenbrink- Bought a White s detector at a flea market and gave it to Mom. Jerry Felton (former member) told us about the club and we joined". Ed Mitchell Metal detecting since 1959 when I met Jim Warnke. In 1970 he found 450 coins off a wreck in Boca Raton Jack Saint Two to three years ago I have always been fascinated by the hobby decided to buy a machine and just look in my own backyard, I knew there was money there! The alternate prizes are yet to be determined. ******************************************** SUMMER HEAT AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT Now that Summer is just around the corner, we need to take a look at how to Keep Cool. Wear light clothes, Sun Block and a Hat will help. When out there, I try to get there before the sun rises and leave when it gets too crowded with people. When you are having a good hunt, it is hard to leave, so I always carry with me plenty of water. Sometimes we forget how hot it can get and we push ourselves to the point that we need to take better care of ourselves. I take breaks when I need them and pace myself so I can go longer hunting. I also carry a sweat cloth with me to wipe myself down from sweating. I fill a water hydration bag with water and put it in the freezer overnight, so when I go out, I wear it on my back and that helps keep me cool. Some members have a fan that sprays a mist at them that will help to keep them cool. Anything that you can think of to help you stay cool, then go ahead and do it. It is better to be safe and cool, than to have a heat stroke. Till next time Jim Sharp ******************************************** CHALLENGE LEVELS Do you enjoy a good challenge? If so, then you should join the quest to master the five challenge levels! This fun program offers a coin reward simply for finding a specific group of targets (much like a scavenger hunt) and showing those finds to the hunt master (Linda Bennett). You can find information about the challenge levels in your new member folder or at club meetings. For questions or explanations, come early to a meeting and speak with Linda.
