FALL 2016 Message from the Lodge Chief PAGE 2 Brothers I am extremely excited and honored to be serving a third term as the Chief of Owasippe Lodge #7. Getting to work and interact with all of the Arrowmen that make up Owasippe Lodge is what makes my job so enjoyable. With that, I want to make it my goal to help inspire young Arrowmen to strive to become the future leaders of the Lodge. In order to start this process of becoming a future leader in the lodge, I ve found that attending events and chapter meetings are the easiest ways to jumpstart that process. In the coming months there are many opportunities for you to start attending events and getting exposed to what the Order of the Arrow has to offer. I ve made some of my closest friends through my time in the Order of the Arrow and I certainly don t want you to miss that opportunity. You were elected by your peers because they felt that you best embodied the Scout Oath and Law in each aspect of your daily life. Take the time to reflect and think about that, what does that mean to you? Hopefully you realize that means that your peers saw something in you, and that you will continue to put that something to use. In our Lodge s 95 year history we have seen thousands of Arrowmen come through Owasippe, but only a handful of those Arrowmen chose to step up to help shape Owasippe Lodge into what it is today. I hope that we can grow that handful because the more active Arrowmen the Lodge has, the greater success we will have as we move forward in the future. A few parting questions to ask yourself. Why did you go through with your ordeal? What do you hope to accomplish during your time in the Order of the Arrow? Please reflect on those important questions and understand why you are a member of the Order of the Arrow. WWW Jacob Klein Lodge Chief Owasippe Lodge #7 In 2017, the Order of the Arrow will continue its tradition of providing cheerful service to the National Jamboree. More than 750 youth Arrowmen will answer the call to serve as part of Operation Arrow by staffing one of the OA s program areas, which include the Service Corps, Trek Guides and Indian Village. The Service Corps, a tradition dating back to 1950, provides reliable manpower support to other essential jamboree programs. Trek Guides lead units on their day-long jamboree trek to the summit of Garden Ground Mountain. The Indian Village serves as the hub for American Indian programming. Indian Village staffers educate Scouts on American Indian life by teaching dance, craft, song and drumming. Based on improvements made and feedback since 2013, the 2017 National Jamboree staff experience promises to be even more rewarding than in previous years. From improved free time to increased meal facilities, these changes should help make this Jamboree be the best yet. Interested Arrowmen can find more info at www.oabsa.org/jamboree or by following @Operation- Arrow on Twitter. Prospective staff members should be at least 16 years old by the start of the Jamboree and able to commit to the full two week period. Scholarships are available to help lower the expense. Please feel free to contact the Operation Arrow Section C-7 Ambassador, Alexander Ostojic, by email at aalexuelect@aol.com if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Yours In Service, Alexander Ostojic Operation Arrow Ambassador Order of the Arrow, Section C-7

We are aiming to build on this great success next summer in 2017 and to do so we need the finest summer camp staff talent available. The all new 2017 Pathway to Adventure Council (PTAC) Summer Camp Staff Application Process is now open. This process applies to every staff member (regardless of position), Counselor in Training (CIT), and summer camp volunteer (including Commissioners) for the 2017 summer camping season. We look forward to another great summer of great things, and hope you will consider joining our great team today! This years Fall fellowship was hosted by Leke Netopalis Chapter and chaired by Aidan Lloyd. Over 70 members attended. Although the attendance number was smaller this year there was not a loss of spirit, fun and cheerful service. Fourteen new Ordeals completed their induction and six lodge members completed their brotherhood. The camp ranger was very pleased to have us there to make their camp better. Over 400 man hours of service was provided to the camp. The work involved splitting wood, clearing brush in camp sites, building new storage racks for fire wood in several camp sites and repairs to the stage in the Fire Bowl. Performing for the first time were new ceremonial teams organized with members from Leke Netopalis chapter, they all did a fantastic job providing meaningful ceremonies for the candidates. Thanks goes out to Leke Netopalis Chapter for planning and providing a great venue for the Fall Fellowship in 2016. 2016 Lodge Membership - November 1 Chapter 2015 2016 2015 vs. 2016 Gete Manitu 77 63 82% Leke Netopalis 53 52 98% Mantowagan 193 179 93% Nacha Alluns 201 179 89% Shkote' Pne'shi 77 75 97% Members at Large 38 31 82% Total 639 576 91%

Cost $250 Age 14-17 Conclave is the biggest and best Scouting event of the entire year, and it's something that you don't want to miss! It's a gathering of OA members from the eleven lodges in Section C-7, almost comparable to a small Jamboree. Over 400 Arrowmen will converge for a weekend of fun and everything OA! Why Should I Attend? Conclave is a great opportunity to go out and meet your fellow Arrowmen. It is one of those few opportunities you get to experience the true meaning of Brotherhood. We will have top of the line training opportunities, awesome activities, and shows that will leave you talking about Conclave for years to come. How Can I Sign-up? You will be able to sign-up at register.oac7.org early in 2017. Ask your Lodge Leadership about payment and transportation details. Note: Owasippe Lodge will be the host lodge for the C7 conclave in the Spring of 2018. All lodge members should plan to attend this year's conclave in 2017 to see and understand the responsibilities of a host lodge. You will be needed to help plan the next conclave. Time to pay Lodge dues for 2017 To be considered an active member of the lodge and be entitled to wear the lodge flap and sash, your dues must be paid annually. By paying your dues on time you directly support the activities and programs of the lodge as well as you are able to attend events, receive all mailings, and purchase lodge properties such as patches, flaps, etc. You must also be registered in a pack, troop, crew, team, or at large in order to be considered an active member of the lodge. Each year Owasippe Lodge provides needed service and materials in support of Camp Owasippe. Your dues will help us to maintain these efforts. All new Ordeals in 2016 should understand that they are expected and required to pay their dues for 2017 to continue as an active member in the lodge. This is your first step to the Brotherhood Level.

PAGE 5 FALL 2016 Become a OA Troop Representative The Order of the Arrow Troop Representative is a youth serving his troop as the primary liaison to the troop s lodge or chapter. He meets the unit s needs by providing a communication and programmatic link to and from all Arrowmen, Scouts who are not presently members of the Order, and adult leaders. These efforts are meant to assist the unit and its members in achieving the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, and at the same time fulfilling the lodge s role in the Strategic Plan of the Order of the Arrow of being an integral part of the council. By setting a good example, he will enhance the image of the Order as a service arm to his unit. Talk with your unit leader and offer to become the OA Troop Representative in your unit. This is a great way to provide a service to the lodge and meet one of the challenges for Brotherhood Membership. Why Brotherhood? It is said, "In the Ordeal, the Order of the Arrow accepts the new member. In the Brotherhood, the individual accepts the lodge and the ideals of the Order." As an Ordeal member of the lodge, service to the troop is of utmost importance. Brotherhood membership in the lodge can be attained after completing ten months as an Ordeal member, and gaining an understanding of the lodge program. Advancement to Brotherhood membership is a personal decision and we recommend that you look over the information on this page and then refer to your Order of the Arrow Handbook for further details. Requirements for Brotherhood Membership Be an Ordeal member for at least ten months. Be an active member of your Scout unit. Be an active, paid member of the Lodge. \ Write a letter to the Lodge Secretary reviewing your progress and planned service. Pay the Brotherhood fee at the event. Participate in a Brotherhood Review class and Brotherhood Ceremony. Become an OA Troop Representative Adviser The adviser to the Troop Representative assists the youth Representative so that he might succeed in his role as the communication and programmatic link between the unit and the Lodge or Chapter. The adviser helps to include the Order of the Arrow ideals and activities in the program of the troop. Be setting a good example, the adviser enhances the image of the Order as a service arm to the unit. Help the youth in your unit succeed by offering to become a Troop Representative Adviser. FALL 2016 PAGE 8 Lodge Adviser s Minute What is The Role of the Adult in the OA? The primary role of an adult in OA is to serve as an adviser to the youth leaders. Every youth leader should have an adult adviser assigned, every committee chairmen (such as Inductions, Fellowship, Winter Banquet, Ceremonies, Elections, Camp Promotions etc). The OA Chapter Adviser is not the leader of the Chapter...he is the adviser to the Chapter Chief. Other functions of the adults can be to facilitate the activities where an adult is required, such as driving, two-deep leadership, operating power tools and heavy equipment at work weekends and Ordeals, etc. Our lodge is currently challenged in all these areas. The Order is what you make of it. The requirements on the petition for adult nomination state the adult will be an asset to the Order of the Arrow due to demonstrated skills and abilities, which fulfill the purpose of the Order of the Arrow. 1. Promote camping, responsible outdoor adventure and environmental stewardship as essential components of every Scout s experience, in the unit, year-round, and in summer camp. 2. Develop leaders (youth) with the willingness, character, spirit and ability to advance the activities of their units, our Brotherhood, Scouting, and ultimately our nation. 3. Crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others. As an adult in the OA you can help to fulfill this purpose in a number of different ways. First set the example by meeting the challenges of Brotherhood Membership. Become an adviser to the OA Troop Representative in your unit. Promote camping within your unit and district. Make every effort to get every boy in your unit to attend summer camp and encourage other unit leaders to do the same. Offer some of your time and skills. Participate in one of the scheduled MOB weekends and/or the Memorial Day Work Weekend at Owasippe and provide needed service to our camp; either skilled or unskilled. Encourage and take 2 or more youth members to a chapter, lodge or section OA event. Encourage and take 2 or more youth members to a chapter meeting. Be sure to talk to your chapter adviser or contact me and ask how you can help as an adviser with a committee or an event.
