Tour and Lunch to Chuck Borough s home in Escondido by Karen Pepe We arrived in our 1927 T truck about 9:00am, Mac & Diane brought the trouble truck, donuts and coffee. Scott was there in his T but did not go on tour with us, Dale & Eleanor drove their Model A. Doug Lested showed on his Harley, Vic & Stephanie arrived about 9:40, so we were a little late starting. The driving tour was great, Mac does a great job of keeping us on roads that are not too busy with nice scenery, as you can see from the photos taken at various times throughout the run. We went north first, out Jesmond Dene, one of my favorite roads out of Escondido, then as far north as Deer Springs where we wandered back to Escondido, and to Walnut Grove Park. There was a road change midway that got us all in a parking lot off the tour map, but what is a good tour if everyone doesn't get turned around. At least there we knew we were off track, but we wound around so much, my internal compass was completely incorrect. When we crossed over the 78, everything in my directional brain had to reset, because what I thought East was West... May 2017 Hidden Valley Model T Club Commutator Page 3
We had a 15 minute stop at Walnut Grove Park, made use of the facilities, watched the horseback riding lessons for a few minutes and then continued our meandering through San Marcos and back to Escondido to the Borough compound, 34 miles later and only 2 miles from our starting point. I loved it. The first thing I noticed as we wound up his street was it kept getting narrower. Then turning into his uphill driveway we were thinking the trouble truck & trailer probably would have a tough time of it. Mac went home, unhooked the trailer and came back... The next thing I noticed upon entering the home was the pianos. They were everywhere. One room fooled me into thinking there were two back to back, but the wall was a mirror, but I easily counted 8, maybe 11? Xylophones hanging on the walls, clarinets on the desk, books and I love books. Oh, the boulder in the house... The large swimming pool, kids playing area. I wanted to play! I did climb to the top of the boulder, just so I could say I did so. There is an eagle (bronze) at the top, which had a pair of binoculars hanging off the wings. I knew a child had done that one. I was told there are 28 grandchildren. They climb the boulder (always) and the shinny up the pole that I assume is there supporting the roof, just so they can touch the roof. Oh, there was a speedster, the one mentioned in the HVMTC meeting. It has never been started in 7 years. We were supposed to have a crew there to assist. The crew (photos say it all) consisted of Mac and and some supervisors. We need to ask Mac if they were successful. I did a very small part, stepped on the starter a few times. Nice car, amazing headlights. Racecar seatbelts, Rajo head, 6V system. May 2017 Hidden Valley Model T Club Commutator Page 4
The Lunch was awesome. Hotdogs, hamburgers and the fixings, fruit soup, coleslaw, deviled eggs, and two kinds of beans, chips and desserts - pie, fudge. I have to get the recipe for the fruit soup, a family longtime recipe of the Boroughs. A great tour, fascinating day. Thanks HVMTC for making my first weekend after tax season a good one. For those that did not make it, you missed out! By the way, Phil Ewing and Doug Lested talked and Doug is our new President, Phil is our new VP. Phil does not have the time right now to take it on, thanks to Doug for stepping up, we are good for another year. Karen Arizona Speedster Run The Pepes and the Rising attended the Arizona Speedster run early in April The Pepes came second in the Speedster Class and the Risings second in the "Others".
