A dynamic Tampere at the node of the railway network Tampere is one of the fastest growing cities in Finland, and it has a promising future as a growing metropolitan area. In 2017, the population increased at a record speed, i.e. by 1.6%, and currently, Tampere Central Region is the second largest central region in Finland, with more than 370,000 inhabitants. The starting point is a vision of a practical centre for all modes of transport that is an attractive cluster of business activities, jobs, services and housing. The Travel and Service Centre will be a gateway for domestic and international transport services. The project will connect the city centre s parts on both sides of the railway yard. In cities, station areas are important, functioning as pleasant hubs of services and large flows of people. The development of station areas is carried out in close cooperation between various actors, which ensures smooth mobility, despite the changes that are being made. The Travel and Service Centre will be the most significant strategic transport and construction project in the city centre of Tampere in the coming years. The project is a key part of the urban development in the station area and an important part of the national development of the railway system. The objective is to create a travel centre that provides first-rate services, smooth travel chains, and to improve the pedestrian and bicycle connections from the station to the surrounding districts. Tampere is located at the heart of the economic region of southern Finland, and it can be reached in less than two hours from the entire area. Travel centre and the blocks a new core for the city The Travel and Service Centre will have versatile functions regarding mobility, jobs, trade, services, leisure and housing, as well as first-rate public urban spaces. The total gross floor area will increase by about 172,000 gross floor m². There will be excellent views from the apartments and offices to the surrounding city. The apartments and offices will be located in the city centre, at a node of all modes of transport. There will be a large number of restaurants and shops on different floors, forming a vibrant whole, and all important services will be available to residents, employees and the users of the station. According to estimates, there will be 10,000 passengers passing via the travel centre during the evening peak hour in 2040. The Travel and Service Centre will form a seamless whole with the Deck and Arena. In addition to the multifunctional arena, the Deck and Arena area will also receive office and commercial premises, housing, a hotel and some square space. The above-ground local detailed plan 8640 for the Travel and Service Centre became pending on 25 August 2016. 2017 The structural layout for the master planning of the Travel and Service Centre was selected and the planning of the extension of P-Hämppi began. 2018 Launch of the planning of the railway yard and the launch of the planning of a change in an underpass beneath the railway yard. An underground plan (extension of P-Hämppi) became pending. The master planning of the Travel and Service Centre began. Pleasant centre for all modes of transport The Travel and Service Centre will serve all modes of transport and reshape the area vigorously, utilising the location that is favourable in terms of international, national and regional accessibility. NEW UNDERGROUND PARKING FACILITY BENEATH THE TRAVEL AND SERVICE CENTRE An extension of the P-Hämppi parking facility will be built beneath the Travel and Service Centre. It will be an underground parking facility that will replace the current P-Asema parking spaces and provide the parking, as well as maintenance and service space, required by new construction. SYNERGY BETWEEN THE EVENT VENUES Tampere is an innovation, university and technology city, as well as a cultural and theatre city. Hotels, restaurants, shops and other services are located within walking distance from the Travel and Service Centre. In congress statistics, Tampere ranks the second in Finland.
