ASHTON GATE SPORTS & CONVENTION CENTRE A New Home For Bristol Flyers

THE VISION I n 2016 Ashton Gate/ Bristol Sport delivered the 45m redevelopment of the home of Bristol City FC and Bristol Bears Rugby. Working in what was an extremely complex and space-restricted site Ashton Gate has now been transformed into one of the leading sports stadiums in the country and the largest conference and events venue in the South West. This project led by Ashton Gate chairman Martin Griffiths was delivered on-time and on-budget through private funding, backed by Ashton Gate/ Bristol Sport owner Stephen Lansdown, CBE. Ashton Gate Stadium represents delivery of Phase 1 of our ambition to deliver and support first-class sport in the region and inspire the community through sport. It is providing economic regeneration for a local community in an area of the city which has traditionally been left behind. Phase II is intended to expand, improve and build on this through the delivery of a new development on two sites. Ashton Gate Sports & Convention Centre is the focal point of our proposal and presents a unique opportunity to develop underused land currently used for employment and retail next to the stadium and enable Ashton Gate/Bristol Sport to provide a permanent home for the Flyers Basketball Team. A team that sold out every home game of the 2017/18 British Basketball League season. The development will represent a true multi-purpose site and a new city sporting quarter for Bristol; delivering national and international events and entertainment. Alongside the 4,000-capacity venue will be two hotels, a multi-storey car park and apartment living space. Cumberland Village is the second site and is located a short walk to the west of the stadium, between the Long Ashton Park & Ride and industrial land adjacent to the stadium. It is right that any proposed development within this city takes account of the housing crisis. With the current housing shortage and drastic lack of affordable homes, we propose that Cumberland Village be developed as an intrinsic part of the plans. A once in a lifetime opportunity to deliver much-needed homes in highly sustainable location bound by the Metrobus M2 route and the Long Ashton Park & Ride.

SPORT T here has long been the ambition to bring the Flyers home to Ashton Gate. As part of the Bristol Sport group it has always been the aspiration to have the team play out of BS3. EXPANSION M aximise the unique opportunity to build on the success of Ashton Gate as a sports, leisure and events venue. COMMUNITY I nspire the community through sporting success and create sustainable places, neighbourhoods and communities. The proposal is to grow a community focused around sport, health and well-being. The key to this is delivering a rich sustainable urban environment, inhabited with hundreds of muchneeded new homes, employment opportunities and amenities where people can work, live and play. Bristol Sport s fast-growing associated charities (Bristol Sport Foundation; Bristol City Community Trust; Bristol Bears Community Foundation; Bristol Flyers Community) need to expand. Through this development they will have the ability to grow and have the benefit of a multifunction hall, breakout and socialising space to be delivered as part of the new Flyers home venue. The new SCC will hugely enhance the community outreach and capability of all of the organisations which are part of the Bristol Sport group. The proposed Cumberland Village is linked to Ashton Gate by the new Metrobus West and Long Ashton Park and Ride. Colliter s Brook / Marina Dolman Way It is a rare opportunity to deliver hundreds of quality homes and affordable housing and will create a new urban edge with unique character along Bristol s urban fringe. SUSTAINABILITY PLACE D eliver a memorable and quality urban environment, a place and destination where the community want to spend time. The area around the old Ashton Gate Stadium once a secure palisade enclosure is now Marina Dolman Way. Running alongside Colliter s Brook, it is a genuine piece of public realm that provides safe pedestrian routes for school children, cyclists and dog walkers on a daily basis. More than this it provides a safe, quality environment for thousands of Rugby and Football supporters on a weekly basis. The Wedlock Way gateway and fan zone is already a plaza and gathering place, exemplified by the success of Ashton Gate s World Cup Village when 30,000 supporters gathered here across the tournament including 6,000 on one night. The focal point of the masterplan will be the axis along Colliter s Brook and Marina Dolman Way, and an enhanced and enlarged fan zone and plaza. The aspiration is to deliver a green corridor through the site, a hub of activity, legibility and movement with first-class landscaping and public realm whilst expanding and enhancing the existing plaza into a genuine public square synonymous with the city s past and future sporting success. D eliver long-term viability and underpin the security of Bristol s top-level professional sports. Ashton Gate Stadium currently manages ASHTON GATE ANNUAL HOSPITALITY REVENUE Pre v post development the arrival and departure of thousands of supporters each week. Redevelopment of the adjacent land enables this movement to be better managed for the benefit of everyone; supporters, nearby residents and the wider community. There are four principle elements to this. Unlocking the potential of the new multi-million-pound Metrobus link that runs adjacent to Ashton Gate Stadium and Ashton Vale whilst promoting long-term connectivity to any future reopening of the Portishead line. Cycling and pedestrian connectivity will be hugely enhanced through provision of an onsite cycle hub for hundreds of cyclists whilst the footways and cycleways around the site boundary can be hugely improved as a consequence of the development. The public realm will be completely permeable to both cyclists and pedestrians. Delivery of 750-850 on-site parking spaces, whilst introducing internal highway capacity and a formal drop-off area within the site. This parking would effectively consolidate existing spaces on-site within a multi-storey NOW 3m 2014 250K car park with managed ingress and egress. Further to this we wish to deliver junction enhancements to the adjacent highways in order to improve the existing movement and flow. Maximising and improving on Ashton Gate Stadium s existing and evolving Travel and Operational Management Plans, including bus services, park and ride, control orders and licensing. Finally, and fundamentally supporting professional sport in the city and inspiring the community through sporting success is underpinned by the commercial success of Ashton Gate Stadium. Phase II expansion will enhance and secure the future long-term financial stability to enable sport in the city to grow and be supported for years to come.
