Matthew 6 verse 21 have been away recently on a I residential core module for a course I am undertaking and though full on with teaching and seminars I had moments to think and in coming away to reflect. So I was surprised when my thinking all came together as I read the above verse from the Bible the day after I returned. It has left me with a question about treasure. What is it that I treasure and that I would indeed even sacrifice my life for? What is the main thing? We spend most of our time and energy focussing and working for a treasure that is very temporary. It is with us for a time then it is not. Money, objects and even status are some of these. Money has a habit of getting spent, like the woman who managed to spend 16,000,000 in Harrods recently revealed on the news. Objects wear out, however much we value our new car or TV, or computer; it very quickly needs maintenance or even replacing. Being a Christian is not about how we do things but put simply about how we relate to God and to each other following the pattern of Jesus 3 Status can come and go, a wrong decision or a word in the wrong ear: just watch The Apprentice TV series to see that. Yet these things occupy most of our striving and therefore our attention and time and are the treasures we hope to obtain. So, what did Jesus actually mean by this? What is it that I treasure and that I would indeed even sacrifice my life for? It has to be those things that endure beyond this mortal life we are all living. So that could be things such as a memory left for others to appreciate and remember you by, a character trait you showed and was valued by many, or indeed simply a legacy left that makes a genuine difference. Maybe some art form or achievement or dare I say what we now invest in our eternal existence beyond death. That cannot be money, objects or status because none of these will survive our death. It can only be something that is relational with the one who lives eternally. As a Christian the answer is simple get to know God through his human representation, Jesus, and to learn now how to live in relationship with him, investing in that relationship, enjoying the stability it brings, until that day when we meet him ourselves. Being a

Christian is not about how we do things but put simply about how we relate to God and to each other following the pattern of Jesus. Anything less than this is probably not Christian behaviour. If your experience of a Christian is less than one who follows these principles of a healthy relationship with God living in the pattern of Jesus as much as we are able; then please don t assume that is Christianity that is just weak humanity. It takes a life time to achieve and not one of us is there yet. I wish it was that simple, but it takes a life time to achieve and not one of us is there yet. The church is indeed, as someone once said, a hospital for those who know they are sick not a place where the righteous gather. I am so far from this ideal myself, but I know it is to where I must aspire. That is where my treasure is and that is worth pursuing. Autumn has now come and the days are getting shorter in our gathering in of autumn give yourself a chance also to think about where your treasure truly is and are you putting too much effort into something that is not truly treasure at all? September Serenade Those who came along to St Peter s Church on a very wet evening on Saturday, 22nd September, were treated to yet another wonderful concert by Lisa s Ladies, the Hilperton Recorder Group, Gill Clarke (mezzo soprano), and poetry reading by Ruth Gwynn. Thanks are due to Michael Rogers, ably assisted by Anne Jarrett, for organising the refreshments, Debs for posters and programmes, Nanneke for her delightful flower arrangements, and those who were unable to come on the night, but gave a donation. Most of all, A BIG THANK YOU to Margaret Dodge for organising the event in aid of our refurbishment project at St Peter s. A total of 425 was raised, which is amazing. Forty Years Ago this Month - November 1978 LEN LAMBERT The Queen opened the new session of Parliament on the last day of the month A bakers strike began on the 7th The 8th saw a day of disasters on the A36. The road was blocked for seven hours at Codford when two lorries crashed and a car and a lorry crashed head-on at Standerwick, resulting in one death The North of England was hit by storm force winds on the 14th, when 100mph gusts were recorded In Scotland, the 15th wasn t much better as severe gales continued in the same area with torrential rain, fallen trees and debris blocking roads Miss Argentina won the Miss World title on the 16th Now here s a funny thing, as Max Miller used to say: the Government announced it was intending to do away with the Road Fund Tax saying this on the 21st, but not actually implementing it Miners put in for a 40% pay increase and a four-day week on the 25th this prompted the weather to take a turn for the worse as the first cold snap arrived: winter showed its teeth with frost and snow We needed to be prepared: there was worse to come. Freshford & District Local History Society The Royal British Legion Freshford Branch CHRIS OSBORNE Membership Secretary (01225 867566) PROFESSOR BARRY GILBERTSON: World Heritage - its importance to Bath In this talk, Barry Gilbertson will discuss the history of World Heritage and how Bath s Inscription on the world list in 1987 makes it one of only two cities in Europe with a citywide World Heritage Site (WHS) designation. He will explain the five aspects of Outstanding Universal Value attributed to the City of Bath in the UNESCO Inscription and why the Inscription is so valuable to Bath s future and to our economy. Barry is very aware of the importance and relevance of the setting to Bath s World Heritage inscription. He will talk about the setting but is very interested to hear the perspective of members of our Local History Society. WEDNESDAY 28TH NOVEMBER 2018 7.30PM FRESHFORD VILLAGE MEMORIAL HALL A Chartered Surveyor by background, the 123rd President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 2004/5, a member of the Georgian Group for more than 30 years, a former Trustee (and still a Volunteer Guide) with the Bath Preservation Trust, Professor Barry Gilbertson was appointed as the new Chairman of the City of Bath UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2017. The World Heritage Site Advisory Board, which Barry chairs, has a clear interest in the preservation and enhancement of our city s heritage and setting. MEMBERS FREE VISITORS 2.00 EVERYONE WELCOME he Branch will have held its 96th T Annual General Meeting by the time this Magazine has been distributed and we very much hope that there was a good turn-out and an interesting and informative talk from the evening s speaker. Our membership is holding its own with some new faces with more recent military service behind them. Being a small branch always means active members are also in the minority which is why we have had to curtail our fund raising, garden parties, etc and we are looking ahead to endeavour to spread our boundariesd. That the Royal British Legion is in a good place has been shown by the example of The Great Pilgrimage GP90: this being a visit to the battlefields of the Western Front by members from across the UK and abroad; representing over 1000 branches with even more Standards. The march past the Menin Gate and on past the saluting dais was the largest march past of Standards ever seen. Our National Chairman said it was the proudest moment of his chairmanship and rightly so. At 11.00am on Sunday 11th November we will remember the moment 100 years ago when the guns fell silent along the Western Front after four and a half years of unimaginable carnage. We will be commemorating the Armistice within the broader context of Remembrance, commencing with a Parish Remembrance Service in St Peter s Church, Freshford at 10.30am. This will incorporate the two minute silence at 11.00am. Following this Service members of the Freshford Branch of the Royal British Legion will walk to the war memorials in Freshford and Middle Stoke where we will remember particularly the First World War fallen of each village. All are welcome to attend these commemorations, which will commence at 12.00noon. There will be an additional Service at St Mary s Limpley Stoke, commencing at 5.00pm. THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION FRESHFORD will be holding an Evening Meeting and the Annual General Meeting at 7.30pm on Thursday 1st November at the Limpley Stoke Hotel. 12 13

School Scribblings ENERGY SAVING PROJECTS AT FRESHFORD SCHOOL Since September 2017, Freshford School pupils have been participating in Energy Sparks, an exciting project teaching pupils about energy, and empowering pupils, staff, and parents to take action to make their schools more energy efficient. Energy Sparks innovative website (www.energysparks.uk) takes data from schools Smart Meters and produces publicly accessible charts and reports that present gas and electricity usage data in ways that are easy to explore. Energy Sparks also provides a recommended set of over 70 tailored energy related activities that guide pupils through an energy saving programme, a means of recording energy saving and monitoring activities to help build up a permanent record of the pupils energy saving activities, and a gamification element with points awarded for completed activities. This encourages competition amongst schools, and an incentive to maintain energy saving interventions. Last school year, Sparks team members at Freshford School monitored lights and appliances left on when classrooms were empty, encouraging pupils and staff to switch off. They also checked classroom temperatures, and encouraged staff to keep radiators set no higher than 18C. They learnt about why it is important to save energy, and ran assemblies spreading the energy saving message. Through regularly recording their energy related activities on the Energy Sparks website, Freshford was one of the highest scoring schools in the last academic year, which meant that the School was awarded 200 towards an energy saving improvement of their choice. The prize money was used to contribute towards the upgrade of much of the School s dilapidated lighting to new LED tubes during the summer holidays. This has resulted in an energy saving of at least 30% and has significantly improved lighting levels across the School. A new energy team has been established for this school year, and already they have been investigating what uses electricity in the holidays, and calculating how much money the School could save if an energy guzzling faulty freezer was replaced in the School kitchens. At the same time, a team of parents is developing a proposal to add solar PV panels to the School roof. In recognition of the work with Energy Sparks, the School will be welcoming, the Rt Hon Claire Perry MP, Minister of State in the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Department for a visit to learn about the programme and our energy saving activities on 18th October. 16 17

Freshford Pre-School 15th Bath (Freshford) Scouts A HIVE OF ACTIVITY Freshford Pre-school has been a hive of activity this term so far, and the children are having such fun exploring. With such wonderful weather, the garden has been hugely popular, and the wildlife have been well looked after. A hedgehog home has been created by the children, with them being able to use real tools in a safe manner. We are excited that a new bird table will be constructed soon to entice birds into the garden as well. AMAZING ME The children have been thinking about their families, within the successful topic Amazing Me! This has enabled them to notice similarities and differences, with engaging small group activities focused on the children feeling a real sense of belonging within the setting. They are so proud to see their amazing artwork up on display, and the Pre-school feels so welcoming because of it. being enjoyed, including courgette bread, soup, cheese scones and a great session with Riverford where the children created their very own rainbow salads! SUPPORTING CHILDREN IN AFRICA We felt so proud as a setting to be able to support the Hippo Pools Trust, which supports families in Africa by donating baby clothes. The children have also been thinking about Harvest, and will be donating to the local food bank, following a Harvest celebration with parents. Coming up in the following term; we are looking forward to our first outing to Victoria Art Gallery, and a yoga workshop, where parents will be invited to join the children. We will also be beginning to think about our magical nativity show for Christmas. What a lovely busy time! Debbie Giles NEW SCOUTING YEAR We launched into our new scouting year, with old members and new getting acquainted amidst the hilarity of a range of water balloon games. Aside from sheer fun, we know activities like these inspire friendship and teamwork, paving the way to adventure, challenge and self-confidence. We are excited about where activities indoors and out over the coming year will take us. Already, Beavers and Cubs have enjoyed creating hex bugs and preparing sushi. Our Scouts are busy developing the practical skill of map reading. NEW SCOUT TROOP We are so thrilled to have started a Scout Troop this year. This means we now offer Scouting in Freshford from the age of six up to fourteen years old. Please get in touch if you are keen to join us. COME AND JOIN US Needless to say, our success depends on the enthusiastic support of volunteers. You don t need to have been a Scout to help out. Nor is age a barrier. If you have some time, energy and passion to support our local children and young people, we d love to hear from you. In particular, we need a Beaver leader and a Quarter Master. Recipe of the month Freshford & District Horticultural Society MAUREEN WHITE SMOKED HADDOCK IN CREAM An easy to prepare starter much of it can be done in advance, and put in the oven at the last minute. Warming for this time of year. Ingredients 12oz/350g smoked haddock Milk 8fl oz/225ml double cream Ground black pepper 4oz/110g Gruyère cheese (or similar) Method 1. Place the haddock in a shallow dish with a little milk. 2. Cover with Clingfilm and microwave for a few minutes until just cooked (or cook gently in a saucepan). 3. Drain, remove any skin and flake the fish. 4. Mix with enough cream to make a velvety mixture and season with black pepper. 5. Divide amongst six ramekin dishes and top each with a little grated cheese. 6. Cook in the oven Gas Mark 6/200C, for 10 minutes, until bubbling. 7. Serve with plenty of good brown bread to mop up the juices. ROGER TURNER: Amaze the Neighbours! He trained as an architect, and now practises as a garden designer in Gloucestershire. He lectures widely on garden subjects, and is the author of several gardening books. He has given talks in the UK, Ireland and the US on a wide range of gardening subjects, specialising in perennials of all kinds, garden design and garden history. He is a knowledgeable plantsman, active in the Hardy Plant Society, and a founding member of the Gloucestershire group of the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens. Remembrance Sunday is always a poignant time and it will have a particular resonance this year as Remembrance Sunday falls on the centenary of Armistice Day, 11 November 1918. We will remember them. We must not forget. As Bishop Tim Thornton says in the special Remembrance issue of our diocesan Manna magazine, Re membering does not mean going through an intellectual exercise. It means doing everything we possibly can to bring back into the reality of today the horrors of the past so that we do not make the same mistakes again. I ve been moved to hear the stories of how our church communities have used this landmark as an opportunity to research their own Tommies, to rededicate memorials, make spectacular poppy displays or install the Perspex Tommies of the charity, Remembered. And how communities have really come together across the generations through these acts, large and small. Re-membering does not mean going through an intellectual exercise. It means doing everything we possibly can to bring back into the reality of today the horrors of the past so that we do not make the same mistakes again. Wildlife Diary AWARD 2: ACTION ON LIGHT POLLUTION AT FRESHFORD STATION. COMMUNITY BIODIVERSITY CHAMPION AWARDS 2018 Each year FLEWG look out for positive initiatives by people in our area who help protect and enhance local biodiversity. This year it was decided by our members to reward the following two initiatives: AWARD 1: BALSAM BE GONE Himalayan Balsam has rapidly spread along the banks of our local rivers and streams. The Balsam was first brought from the Himalayas by well-meaning plant hunters, not realising the negative implications for our native species and habitats. The aggressive seed dispersal by Balsam allows it to out-compete native plants and it also promotes river bank erosion due to the plant dying back over winter and leaving the bank unprotected from flooding. In this way Balsam reduces native species. Sue Field of Westwood decided to recruit a group of friends to do something about the impact of Balsam on our environment. The end result was a team of 20 people recruited from Bradford on Avon, Westwood and Freshford clearing Balsam along the river Avon from Freshford Mill to the Avon and thence on up to Avoncliff. The problem looked somewhat overwhelming, but in the spirit of Mark 11:23 if anyone says to this mountain the plants were duly removed (gently but firmly so as to take the entire root with them). The town of Frome has also started to address this problem this summer: and on 16th September the BBC One Show promoted the idea on a national scale. No-one is kidding themselves that this has now solved our local problem, but a highly significant start has been made this year. Jonelle was the team s press officer and is photographed in front of the Galleries shop to say a big Thank you to FLISCA for financial support for this initiative. The Freshford Inn and Cross Guns at Avoncliff also provided support. A group of concerned Murhill residents started a constructive dialogue with Network Rail about light pollution issues as part of the Freshford station platform extension. The local MP covering Murhill is Michelle Donelan, who attended a meeting at the station and was highly supportive of this local environmental cause. The timing was interesting given we at FLEWG had just completed our film about light pollution in partnership with the William Herschel Society and the commission for Dark Skies. We joined the meeting and passed the film on to Network Rail. (The film provides best practice guidance for designers, developers and property owners and interviews expert speakers. You can see the film LIGHT POLLUTION - Starlit Skies - Biodiversity - Human Health on your computer at http://starlitskies.org.uk/educating) FLEWG members were extremely impressed by the research and analysis that the Murhill representatives had undertaken and the constructive dialogue that then resulted due to their diligent and positive approach. Network Rail then produced a list of revisions and improvements to their plans. BATH SAILING CLUB The Bath Sailing Club is a small friendly cruising club affiliated to the RYA, which holds meetings and a series of talks during the off season. Anyone interested in sailing, especially cruising will be welcomed. General information about the club activities can be found on the club website www.bathsailingclub.org.uk. The club was formed 35 years ago and has been meeting in various centres around Bath. In addition to our series of meetings and talks in Bath we hold a rally for members where novices can join boat owners to gain experience. The club also supports members in external seminars such as, first aid, use of radio and radar. This is the third year that the club has held its meetings in Bathford Village Club. BATH SOMERSET NATURAL BURIAL MEADOW The meetings are held on the second Monday of every month between September and March when the sailing season starts. The meetings and talks start at 7.45pm and they are open to anyone interested, initially as guests. The talks are not always related to sailing and navigation, however, and may include other adventure topics. The speaker at the November meeting is the leader of the Ice Maidens Antarctic Expedition. Major Nicola Wetherill RAMC has kindly agreed to talk to us about this most amazing feat by six women in early 2018 to walk unsupported across the Antarctic ice shelf.
