3 July 2015 Dear Customers, Bringing You Up To Speed Sorry that it has taken a lot longer than I d like, for you to hear from us. We have had a number of problems with our printer we use, and these came to a head last year. Following books being sent out with 33 pages defective (that did not appear in the proof copy), we had to spend more time arguing with Print On Demand Worldwide Ltd. This culminated in their MD being up here for tea and biscuits. He seemed to be of the opinion that things were improving, rather than going the other way. We now know, we were not the only ones. We apologise for every delay, problem book, and missing copy. They have cost us potential sales, and a joint venture, not to say all the time and delays, with problems over quality, inconsistency, and cutting corners. The company who we ve been working with, were the only one printer who can do at a cost, in penny numbers at a time. We were, however, looking for alternatives. (Suzy was also looking at returning to a 9-5-ish job, but that s as far as it went). We are still covering the running costs of the company from our own income during these quiet spells, although we d like the costs to be covered by what we sell. Also, Suzy hasn t drawn a salary since we started the company in August 2011, there is also a long term aspiration. There s also the small matter of our wedding! So, it came to Suzy after we get Strathtay, The Story So Far done (now Strathtay, The First 30 Years), we will move to an entirely new system, with books being done loose leaf. A decent quality ring binder, online or paper monthly updates, and keeping things going in a new way. The problems of quality checking not being done, and also being up-to-date as possibile (without the printer taking several H2T Customer Newsletter 1, July 2015 Page 3

4 weeks after we put the book together) were something that could be resolved in one shot. In other words, we started from the ground up, and looked at our entire approach to the way we do things. We have picked three different products, and hopefully one will suit you! Our current large area books will become a new, loose-leaf book, with updates monthly. This means that, whenever you buy this book, it can be always up to date. It also means that we save waste, by only reprinting timetables when services change. Every purchaser gets six months free downloadable updates, or a 20% discount on the costs of the printed updates, for the same time. After that, you can pay to receive our updates by post, or downloadable online. This starts from the day you buy this book. This should get round the issues of delays, while assembling ourselves means we can do the quality check on every copy something our printer seemed to overlook sometimes. We got quotes from decent suppliers - the folders are made by a company in this country in Staines-upon-Thames (Surrey) by Celsur Plastics, while the inserts are printed in Islington, north London by CLP the company that I used back in the Dundee Bus Bulletin days fifteen years ago! They also occupy what was the former PSV Circle unit at Leroy House. We looked at options, the price would be more, but after trying to get another source, this was the only option. There would be some advertising-supported additional free titles, starting with Welwyn-Hatfield area of Hertfordshire. Then, something else came to Suzy. We looked at options to further streamline our output, and options for bringing the printing in-house. This would lead to considerable time savings, as well as cost (we can use CLP and other local print houses at a time of emergency!) So, I am proud to be announcing the arrival of Minnie-olta, a Konica Minolta Bizhub C353 Copier/Multi-function printer, on Monday 29 th June H2T Customer Newsletter 1, July 2015 Page 4

5 The biggest Achilles heel in the company, I do believe, has proven to be the printers we have used. As we are getting the loose leaf binders and filled here, it does make sense I believe, to do this. More on our new titles in due course. Needless to say we are also expecting a Franking Machine, dubbed Frankie2 Enclosed photo is from the brochure, ours will be used and will have a finisher attached too. Having our own equipment WILL speed things up considerably for example, a proof copy as good as the original can arrive in an hour, versus one that will differ in quality considerably three months later! Also, the cost to the end user (per book) will not be that much different to what we have charged in the past perhaps a few pounds in some circumstances but not a large jump! Does it do a good job? 6 Keep Up To Date Our books will be Perpetual Editions and this means we can send you updates. When you buy the book, you will get six months free downloadable updates online, or a discount of around 20% on the price of paper copies. Downloadable ones are ideal if you are happy making small changes manually, and/or picking just those you want. Paper updates are sent by post, once a month, and you will get them ready punched, to slot into your book. For those who wish to archive our books, you can select paper updates, then store the old pages, every month, in a separate ring binder or lever-arch folder. If you prefer, you can buy a new book as often as you like, and simply move the old one to your archive. Where the book shows Perpetual Edition on the spine and cover, you can add a removable sticky note or label, with the date in question. This is ideal if you often get swamped with new leaflets, and just want a book to use and refer to. We will provide a ring binder in A5 size, in a spine width to suit the amount of contents we expect. As an alternative, you can pay to have them sent to you in A4 size, for an additional extra charge to cover the postage (these will only generally be sold direct). Where our titles are in a different format (i.e. A5 2 up on A4 paper and book), we will say so. We also appreciate that the rail timetables get a mixed response. Therefore, we will have them in a loose-leaf plastic pocket, in the booklet/leaflet supplied by the train operators. This means we can add train timetables at less cost, and those who don t want them, can remove them from their ring binder. H2T Customer Newsletter 1, July 2015 Page 6

7 Forthcoming Titles - Here To There Publishing Ltd A good number of you have pre-orders for some of our timetable books, including a number for those that will be replaced by our new loose-leaf bound books. At the moment, the first priority and the only book currently being worked on is the Strathtay, The Story So Far which is now to be titled Strathtay The First 30 Years. This is rather behind, and this is the priority at the moment, with other ongoing things like websites not far behind. From this week, I am stepping up to four days a week, until further notice. Once we get the book off for proofing (this will be the last with our present printer), we will concentrate on the next range. Assuming all goes well during the enhanced work week, this will continue for the foreseeable future. We are away for just over a week in mid-august, technically a honeymoon if you like, but a fortnight after our wedding. We will also be shutting up shop in November for my sister s wedding in Dundee, which sadly clashes with the date of the LOTS sale for (We had a wonderful time there 2014 ) But, I digress. Next round on London titles will be updated, I would expect, to coincide with the Night Tube in September. Our sub-editor has not long completed the index. Hertfordshire cuts and tender renewals start from 1st September We would realistically look to mid-august for starting the indexes on those ones. Following cessation of most of Central Beds printed books (except the one for Dunstable/Leighton Buzzard which has external funding and will continue until that runs out), we may well add Luton and Central Beds (at least) into a single Beds volume, and thoughts on that would be welcome. (Our customers have been positive about thoughts of that). Wiltshire & Swindon Index done, and I d expect progress starting late Summer. Fife and Grampian will be probably mid-august time when the schools go back, there will be a high number of changes. Essex nothing too untoward. Tayside, Northumberland, Passing Around Scotland, National Express, Cambs, will be all thereafter, but that s on the backburner for now. Hopefully this gives you an overview of what to expect, but exact times may vary slightly as circumstances dictate. To put it another way - after the Strathtay historical one is done, London/Wilts/Fife/Grampian I d expect first, then Herts, Essex, Beds?, and then more besides that list in no particular order. It is anticipated each book will be updated monthly, with options of downloads or paper copies. We will split our time between updates and other admin and development work. 8 New Websites, and Online Shop As part of a long-promised-to-myself upgrade, Here To There Publishing has a new website still at It s been redone in WordPress, and now integrates the blog as part of the website. In addition to brining things up to date (I ve been doing websites the same way since 1997!), it is so much easier to use on mobile devices. It is also a million times easier to update. After a successful trial, it s been rolled out over the rest of our sites. Also, just live last week was our brand new Online Shop. The site is linked from our new main website, or go directly to All our 2014 books are there, along with ALL of our the Steven Knight stuff. This brings up to date the range we have, including two new pre-orders. Stagecoach Manchester and Stagecoach South, which are due next month. It is also possibile to set International postage options, right from the cart. To simplify things in the early days, it is intended to charge flat rate Internationally (based on the most expensive cost) but then refunding any excess postage/packing charge. Our own titles are stir I ve used the ICW BigCartel shop for tees and DVD s and been happy with its ease of use. I got further with Big Cartel in an hour than I had done with Opencart in over one year! Very good tools. Our own new range will follow in the coming months. New Phone Hours Our Customer Services Team in Ely (operated by PA Answer) have been helping our customers for almost a year now. As of Friday 6th February 2015, they have been open even longer, now seven days a week! You can ring them up to buy a book, ask questions, or say hello - from to Monday to Friday (Weekdays), and now from to Saturdays and Sundays. Just ring Welwyn , Ely , Dundee , London , whichever is cheapest for you! Incidentally, this was done at no extra cost our service costs did go up for the first time when the company raised their prices for the first time in their history. We will be happy to send them for a small charge per calendar year or four posted Newsletters whichever comes last within the UK. 14 Midland Red Remembered Midland Red remains an extremely popular fleet and we are constantly asked when we will be producing another book in our 'Images of Yesteryear' series. Well, the answer is now. Midland Red Remembered provides a visual journey across some of the Western parts of Midland Red's operating territory in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The previously unpublished photographs have been taken by transport commentator David Cole. David also went in search of the very small number of Midland Red vehicles which found use with other operators after withdrawal and also tracked down a vehicle used as it site hut at a reclamation yard.
