1 WEEKLY REPORT OWENS VALLEY MOSQUITO ABATEMENT PROGRAM MAMMOTH LAKES MOSQUITO ABATEMENT DISTRICT WEEK 4: SEPTEMBER 3 TO OCTOBER 6, 218 PAST WEEK S TREATMENT SUMMARY Larvicide treatments are wrapping up for the season. The Owens River flow out of Pleasant Valley Reservoir has remained around 6 cfs this week. We will be keeping a close eye on the river until cooler weather sets in. Over the next couple of weeks, staff will be finishing up their surveillance activities and cleaning up to prepare all equipment for its winter slumber. Unfortunately the mosquitoes will be likely back come springtime. This is the last ly Mosquito Report for the 218 season. Many thanks to the hard working members of the OVMAP and MLMAD staff for their successful mosquito control efforts this year! Please give them a pat on the back if you see them around town for keeping us safe. They deserve it! As always, please call (76) or visit inyomonoagriculture.com to report any mosquito nuisances you may have experienced. We also encourage you to notify us of any special outdoor events (weddings, concerts, etc.) scheduled in your area. Staff will give these locations a close inspection and treatment if necessary. 2 WEEK 4: SEPTEMBER 3 TO OCTOBER 6, 218 PAGE 2 OF 6 ANALYSIS OF COLLECTION RESULTS EVS traps were deployed along the south district run (Aberdeen to Cartago) this week. All 1 traps performed well with no malfunctions detected. This was another low mosquito abundance week to wrap up low mosquito abundance season. A total of 35 mosquitoes were trapped this week, down from the 97 found two weeks ago. 22 of the 35 were collected in the Cartago Soda Ponds trap. The Independence (Tree Farm), Lone Pine (Spainhower Park), Owens River Delta, and Keeler traps added a few more. The remaining traps did not detect any mosquitoes. Our BG Sentinel did not collect any mosquitoes. No invasive Aedes species were found during the 218 season. A trapping run completed on the Owens Dry Lake this week caught 2 additional mosquitoes (1 Culex tarsalis and 1 Culiseta inornata). This was the last trapping run of 218. DISEASE TESTING SUMMARY Location Number Submitted Number Positive An insufficient number of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes were collected this week to submit any samples for disease testing. A minimum of 25 Culex tarsalis from a single trap location is required. All samples submitted this year tested negative for West Nile virus (WNV), St. Louis encephalitis (SLE), and Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE). Tough to see the season end! The 218 crew before they ride off into the sunset (on their ATVs). (Left to Right): Michael Cappello, Steve Allen, Ryan Cappello, & Rob Miller.
