5 Best value for you We strive to ensure we offer not only competitive prices but the best added extras to give you value for your money. Added value offers FREE NIGHTS These really can save you a lot of money. MEAL OFFERS Look out for FREE half board and half board for half price. FREE ROOM UPGRADES Enjoy a FREE upgrade to a higher room category. Where to stay... Everyone is different and that s why our brochure incorporates a portfolio of hotels which span a whole spectrum of styles. From small and simple to truly world class hotels offering the ultimate in luxury... and everything in between. Our aim is to ensure that there is something to suit every taste. The majority of hotel accommodation in the British Isles carries an official grading, which is awarded by an independent authority. Most awards are made under the Visit Britain scheme, although some properties may have opted to be graded by the AA. However, the grading criteria are very similar, so the grades are comparable. Properties are inspected annually and must comply with local regulations as well as meeting set grading criteria. Accommodation is broadly divided into three categories: HOTEL - usually offering a wider range of facilities and services. GUEST HOUSES - Often family run - possibly only offering bed and breakfast, where quality is more important than facilities and services. SELF-CATERING - perfect for families or friends travelling together seeking more space and flexibility. Accommodation, within each category, is awarded a star grade, but be aware that even where the number of stars is the same the actual standards will differ as the grading criteria vary according to the accommodation category. In Jersey only, some properties are awarded RED stars, which indicate a superior accommodation within the grade and category. Just a place to stay If you have already made your own travel arrangements and only wish to book a hotel with us, then we will be happy to do that for you too. It s an exceedingly friendly walking and cycling island with a maze of cycle paths, walks and 45 miles of Green Lanes, which meander through the various parishes. Geographically closer to France than England, Jersey is a unique blend of continental flair and reassuringly familiar scenes. It s British pounds and French place names, cream teas and croissants, Breton-style seafood and traditional fish and chips. When it comes to food, Jersey s reputation as a foodie island is growing and embraces everything from Michelin-starred restaurants and chic bistros to gastropubs and coastal cafes. 22 call

23 What to see St Helier: Jersey s capital has sophisticated shops, a varied nightlife and mouth-watering selection of restaurants, along with a leisurely pace of life. Mont Orgueil Castle: Towering over Gorey s picturesque harbour is 13th century Mont Orgueil, which served as a German command and observation post during World War II. The Waterfront Centre: Offering a marina, multi-screen cinema, swimming pool with slides and a fun pool making it a great place to take the family. Jersey Museum & Art Gallery, Merchant s House: Located by the Weighbridge, the Story of Jersey exhibition is an ideal introduction to the island. Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust: Known for its work in saving and breeding endangered species. Elizabeth Castle: Named after Queen Elizabeth I by Sir Walter Raleigh, the castle is marooned on a rock a mile out to sea at high tide and can be reached by duck boat, or via a causeway at low tide. Jersey War Tunnels: Jersey s most evocative museum of the five years of German occupation during World War II. Originally intended as artillery barracks it was converted to a hospital in Open Mar-Oct. La Mare Wine Estate: Explore local food and drink culture at this popular working estate. The Beaches St Brelade s Bay: These fabulous south coast golden sands are perfect for beach games. Beauport Bay: A delightful south coast beach, which is a veritable sun trap. Plemont Bay: A well shielded, wide, golden sand beach, reached by steep steps. Cliffs and rocky headlands provide good shelter. Greve de Lecq: The north coast s most popular and busiest family beach. One mile east is Devil s Hole where you can get a flavour of the north coast s stunning scenery. Bonne Nuit Bay: A tiny fishing harbour with spacious sands, but not ideal for swimming. Rozel Bay: Is small and unspoiled, nestled in a cove with a wooded hillside rising behind it. Grouville Bay: A long stretch of sand leading to Gorey Harbour with Mont Orgueil as a backdrop. St Ouen s Bay: With miles of sand washed by Atlantic waves, magnificent St Ouen is a natural playground for surfers and adrenalin seekers. St Aubin s Bay itself is a sweeping crescent of smoothly sloping sandy beach where the waters are calm enough for watersports. 44 GUERNSEY A short journey from home, but a million miles from the hectic pace of 21st century life! Nestling off the Normandy coast, Guernsey is the second largest of the Channel Islands, and although only a short hop from its bigger neighbour, is most definitely its own island. Full of natural beauty, it provides a relaxing environment for a peaceful getaway. Winding lanes reveal rolling pastures, tree filled valleys dotted with traditional Guernsey farmhouses constructed from local granite and lead to dramatic cliff views and glorious sandy beaches - there is a surprise around every corner! 46 Why visit Guernsey? For most visitors, the island s coast is its greatest draw and with over 28 miles of spectacular cliff top paths and rural lanes, the best way to appreciate it is on foot at your own pace. The south and east is cliff-fringed with meandering coastal paths leading you through pine forests and past rocky coves to reveal stunning views; while the north and west coast is flatter with miles of sweeping sandy bays or wide open beaches. Inland, the Ruettes Tranquilles are narrow, winding lanes which take you off the beaten track through the countryside. But this little island packs in many other enticements. The capital St Peter Port, with its quaint cobbled streets, Regency architecture and picturesque seafront marina, is considered one of Europe s prettiest harbour towns. Along with shops, boutiques and bustling markets you ll also find Castle Cornet which has stood guard over the town for 800 years, beautiful Candie Gardens and Hauteville House, the former home of French writer Victor Hugo. Heritage is a big part of island life and you ll discover burial mounds dating back to Neolithic times, Napoleonic sea defences and reminders of the German occupation. When it comes to activities the whole family are spoilt for choice, be it kayaking around south coast coves, coasteering down 300ft high cliffs, windsurfing and sailing, or playing golf on one of the island s beautifully-kept courses. Nature lovers are in for a treat too, with plenty of bird watching opportunities, including boat trips in search of puffins. There is an abundance of amazing local produce grown and reared on the island and gathered from the surrounding waters. Whether it s fish and chips with your toes in the sand, an indulgent afternoon tea, good value pubgrub or blow the budget dinner, Guernsey prides itself on the plethora of restaurants, cafes and kiosks to choose from. A unique place which, thanks to its proximity to France, offers a sense of a holiday abroad, but nonetheless feels resolutely British. St Peter Port 46 call

47 What to see St Peter Port: An historic capital with a beautiful harbour and quaint, cobbled High Street. Castle Cornet: A medieval castle with museums covering over 800 years of maritime and military history. At midday, two redcoats fire a one-gun salute from the Royal Battery. Candie Gardens: This late 19th century public flower garden is one of the British Isles oldest known heated glass-houses. Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery: A modern building which houses all manner of information and exhibitions of Guernsey s history. Hauteville House: Discover where 19th century French writer, Victor Hugo, spent 15 years in exile. Little Chapel: Possibly the smallest church in the world modelled on the shrine at Lourdes and decorated in shells and pottery. German Military Underground Hospital & German Occupation Museum: This building has altered little since the end of World War II and a visit is a very moving experience, whilst the German Occupation Museum has an extensive collection of Nazi memorabilia. Oatlands Village: Home to all manner of crafts. Sausmarez Manor: Although still lived in, you can take a tour of the 18th century house while the grounds boast a subtropical woodland garden, a pitch and putt and a miniature railway. Fort Grey & Shipwreck Museum: The museum is at the southern end of Rocquaine Bay and Fort Grey is one of the island s three Martello towers. It was built in 1804 as a defence against French invasion. The sea surrounding the fort has over 100 shipwrecks. The Beaches Rocquaine Bay: At the start of the low lying part of the island, this is the first of several stretches of sweeping sands along Guernsey s west coast. Perelle Bay: Taking its name from the Celtic word for rock and at low tide the bay is a rocky vista. Vazon Bay: A broad expanse of firm sand, the area is renowned for surfing and in summer, the flat beach is used for motorbike racing! Cobo Bay: Named after the pink coloured granite which is found here, Cobo is a family favourite offering a long stretch of safe and sandy beach with rock pools galore. Excellent for windsurfing. Saints Bay: On the rugged south coast is a tiny, away from it all cove with just a small beach kiosk providing snacks. Even in the height of summer, there are usually only a few people on the beach. Fermain Bay: On the east coast, lying at the end of a beautiful wooded valley. The Moorings, on the northern side of the entrance to the bay, is a perfect spot for swimming and diving. L Ancresse Bay: At the northernmost tip of the island, you ll find the twin sandy beaches of L Ancresse and Pembroke. L Eree Bay: Looking out towards Hanois lighthouse, the sea wall offers shelter creating a sun trap on a lovely sandy bay.
