Heart of the Yorkshire Pennines, this is classic walking country. The scenery, character and sense of place, all larger than life, inspired locally born Ted Hughes, the late poet laureate, honoured as the man who changed the face of English literature. Looking ahead, Halifax boldly re-invents its historic buildings and Hebden Bridge, one of the world s funkiest towns, has a mission for sustainability. 3 Boundaries come and go but Calderdale today represents much the same patch as the former mediaeval Parish of Halifax, once the richest in the British Empire, a wealth built not on slavery or colonial exploitation but on the energy and enterprise of its people. our culture & our heritage The modern world was created here in the South Pennines by the birth of the Industrial Revolution. You re at the heart of that story. it s a matter of pride Textiles, the world s first manufacturing industry, shaped the landscape around you, much of which lies within the South Pennines Heritage Area. Ours is a heritage set in green space: farms and hamlets in a walled patchwork of fields; old packhorse ways; early mills lost in the woods. Regeneration has put new purpose into former textile mills and an arts and café culture fits happily with our Victorian townscapes. What began in the Middle Ages as a family affair: the dual economy of sheep farming and handloom weaving grew to be the powerhouse of the Victorian Age. Textile wealth crafted the architecture of picture postcard Mankinholes, Luddenden and Heptonstall; the Georgian masterpiece Halifax Piece Hall & Grade I listed Todmorden Town Hall. Textile fortunes built Hebden Bridge the classic South Pennine mill town and refashioned Halifax into one of the most complete Victorian towns. Movements which shaped a better world were championed here: unions, the vote, co-operatives and touching all our lives, the founding of building societies, including the Halifax. Our nonconformist heritage is of world status. John Wesley himself preached at Heptonstall, its octagonal Methodist Chapel the oldest in the world still in use. MP Honest John Fielden of Todmorden secured the Ten Hour Act: milestone on the road to social justice. Not a society of lord and master, we boast no stately homes but revisit the past in two fine historic houses: 15th century Shibden Hall and mill magnate s mansion, Bankfield Museum. The former was the home of early feminist writer Anne Lister; the latter, noted for textiles, is also the site of the Duke of Wellington s Regimental Museum. Local lads were the backbone of Wellington s Napoleonic army - it s fitting that television s Sharpe has a Yorkshire accent. Moortop monument Stoodley Pike originally celebrated Napoleon s defeat. a passion for new ideas Triumphs of railway engineering include what was then the world s longest tunnel and historic canals stretch a waterway ribbon through our modern world, a green symbol of northern renaissance. Times change but not our practical passion for new ideas. The National Trust s water-powered Gibson Mill is unique in Europe for sustainable development and, symbol of regeneration, Dean Clough Halifax is now an international icon of arts and enterprise. 6 Cycle a towpath where boats chug by. Climb to the heights where merlins fly. Lose yourself but not your way along mile after mile of visitor friendly footpaths. You re off duty. Just be free to be. freedom to be Let the lie of the land lead the way. Nature has run amok along our historic canals. Packhorse ways follow paths which are old as the hills and crags of millstone grit challenge the climbing elite. see the lie of the land Writer Sylvia Plath found her muse in the bluebell woods of Hardcastle Crags, whilst poet laureate Ted Hughes found his own in a moortop wind from the end of the skies. An amber rampart, summer hazed with heather purple, these moors are EU conserved for nature - a refuge for skylarks, poets and you. These heights are serious stuff, crossed by the super tough Pennine Way National Trail. En route: Todmorden s skyline landmark Stoodley Pike and a necklace of Victorian reservoirs, sapphires under blue skies. Much of this wild watershed is open access check Yorkshire Water s website. Circling the district our own mega footpath, the Calderdale Way, offers hard slogs and spectacular views but also countryside close to home. Top Trails in Yorkshire, published by Natural England, flags up the UK s official National Trails including the new Pennine Bridleway. For riders, mountain bikers and walkers, this circles through our hills as The Mary Towneley Loop, a fantastic opportunity to leave the car behind and indulge your senses in Yorkshire s exhilarating landscape. All year in all weather, Calderdale Countryside Services are exactly that - at your service. He was of course a Yorkshireman. Tackle a range of on and off road cycling. The Pennine Cycleway and West Yorkshire Cycleway lead high level and the Calder Valley Cycleway, punctuated by public artworks is great for families. 7 We are all in this together. New ideas made this area great - once more we re on the case. Save energy, shop local, travel green - protect tomorrow today. shared earth The arts in Calderdale reflect the place - offbeat and independent, passionate that the north shines on the map. From one of the UK s most active galleries to surely its most unorthodox theatre company, writers, artists and performers make this one of Britain s most creative communities. shining example Stay local, stay green Unorthodox, eco active Hebden Bridge is a natural home for projects with a vision. power in the landscape Learn how the Alternative Technology Centre aims to make sustainability achievable and simply irresistible using working demos, a Green Shop and even a cross section of an energy saving house! Canalside ATC is looking to put water power back to use in today s Calder Valley. Hebden Bridge Mill, founded 1314, shares the dream. An interior waterwheel turned here till See it restored to working order with big plans to re-harness the wheel for power by the mill s 700th birthday. The National Trust s landmark restoration of Gibson Mill in Hardcastle Crags is unique in Europe. This former 19th century cotton mill is now a beacon of sustainable energy with no mains power supply even for the café. Exhibitions also recall a former role as a mill workers pleasure palace. how to make a difference Three ways you can make a difference? Shopping, eating and moving around. Unexpected tv stars, the Hebden Bridge Bag Ladies aim for a plastic carrier free zone - take your string bag and don t forget to give public transport a try. The late Ted Hughes, Mytholmroyd s famous son, towers over contemporary English literature. The inaugural Ted Hughes Festival was staged in Feminist icon and writer Sylvia Plath is buried in Heptonstall. a reflection of the arts Dean Clough Halifax is a landmark of visionary regeneration. A former mill complex - now a business hub, acclaimed jazz venue and one of the UK s most active private galleries. Dean Clough-based Northern Broadsides deliver forthright theatre with Yorkshire attitude. Bankfield Museum Halifax curates a textiles collection of international importance adding a bold focus on contemporary crafts. In contrast, the refurbished Smith Art Gallery, Brighouse, unveils an intimate insight into Victorian tastes and values. Georgian Square Chapel Centre for the Arts Halifax, noted for a perfect acoustic, is the only building of its kind in Britain. Also an architectural gem, the refurbished Victoria Theatre Halifax is home venue for the Halifax Choral Society as well as a venue of choice for a wide range of touring pop acts, theatre, comedy and more. A grassroots tradition of music - choral, orchestral, brass is strong here - as is the pub music circuit. The Independent rates Hebden Bridge Trades Club one of the country s top venues for jazz, blues and world music and don t miss the multi-award winning Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band. Hebden Bridge Arts Festival and the Pennine Spring Music Festival are nationally rated in the cultural year and in the final frame, our vintage cinemas: Hebden Bridge Picture House and The Rex Elland; 21st century film in accessible Art Deco settings. Smith Art Gallery, Brighouse Save jobs and road miles: support the area s Shop Local Campaign. Todmorden and Hebden Bridge are official Fairtrade towns with a focus on ethical goods. Look out for the signs on shops and cafés. The Bear Caf in Todmorden was organic before organic was trendy. Now it s joined valley wide by many shops, cafés and markets selling organic and local produce. In the early 1900s Gibson Mill in Hardcastle Crags was used as an entertainment emporium for local people, complete with a dance hall, dining saloons and roller skating rink. The cellar space beneath E Mill at Dean Clough has been converted into an atmospheric 300 seat auditorium, the Viaduct Theatre, home to the Northern Broadsides theatre company

8 Brighouse and Elland are the Calder Valley gateway. Halifax, the historic hub of Calderdale, has time on its side, a contemporary confidence reinventing what is now ranked the most complete Victorian town in Britain. historic hub & valley gateway Brighouse and Elland From as early as 1770, when the Calder & Hebble Navigation linked the valley to ocean going trade, Brighouse and Elland never looked back, today proud to see their historic early mills converted to bold new use. Brighouse canal basin is busy with boats; the towpath a characterful pre dinner promenade. Victorian values are uniquely mirrored at the Smith Art Gallery, whose art was even vetted for moral tone. Backdrop to the town, the wooded vale is threaded with quiet byways. Up river, Elland indulges in nostalgia twice over: at the vintage Rex Cinema, complete with cinema organ and at Joseph Dobson s: family confectioners since 1850 and home of the Mint Imperial. Find Andy Thornton Architectural Antiques nearby in West Vale where the Calderdale Way footpath starts its journey under the oak canopy of North Dean Woods. Pay homage to local links with the celebrated Brontë sisters. Teaching at Southowram, a homesick Emily Brontë may well have worked on Wuthering Heights, using Shibden Hall in Halifax as a setting. Hartshead Church above Brighouse was Reverend Brontë s first Yorkshire living. In 1812, he witnessed the Luddite Revolt, inspiration to Charlotte Brontë s novel Shirley, set in many sites nearby. Halifax Calderdale s largest town has a sense of harmony, its centre walkable, with open views, a place on a human scale which still has time for people. The colonnaded Georgian Piece Hall houses Halifax Visitor Centre and Art Gallery. Stroll from here through splendid Victorian townscapes dominated by our Grade II* listed Town Hall, the work of Charles Barry, designer of the Houses of Parliament. Halifax is known for its night scene, the arts and café culture of Dean Clough and Square Chapel and for laugh, play and learn EUREKA! Mediaeval Shibden Hall and Victorian Bankfield Museum combine a passion for past times with a punchy events and exhibitions diary. Take time out in quiet corners: the nature in town of the Hebble Trail; the Victorian folly, Wainhouse Tower and Grade I listed Halifax Parish Church, one of the finest in Yorkshire, with a noted choral and organ tradition. This was once the mediaeval heart of town and the old paved Magna Via still scales Beacon Hill. Climb up for a view of all views. Centre stage confident in stone and steel: The Halifax Bank, symbol of a town where the old is at ease with the new. 9 Even on the map, the Upper Valleys look intriguing, winding their way beneath the South Pennine moors. The pattern of history is so special that this ranks among the world s most significant heritage landscapes. the valleys of calderdale Sowerby Bridge is shaping a new style. Its flower decked canal wharf, a buzzy eats and drinks venue, updates some of Britain s most authentic early millscapes. Summer canal trips leave from Tuel Lane Lock, the deepest in Britain. Explore the town s foodie reputation, specialist shops, an award winning Sculpture Trail and even a new solar powered market. September s Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival is unique in Yorkshire. Ripponden The deeply rural Ryburn Valley slips away at Sowerby Bridge. The Ryburn cradles the conservation village of Ripponden where 14th century Bridge Inn hosts the UK Pork Pie Festival and Michelin rated gastro-pub The Millbank is just up the hill. The Oldham road climbs south to dramatic views of the M62, the UK s highest motorway. When Branwell Brontë lodged at the old Lord Nelson at Luddenden he would no doubt have enjoyed the glorious oak woodlands and meadows that now make up Jerusalem Farm Local Nature Reserve, great nature made famous by tv s In Loving Memory. Mytholmroyd Arrive by train to see Ted Hughes story Iron Man portrayed in station art and views up Cragg Vale, the longest unbroken road climb in England and lair of the 18th century counterfeiting gang: the Cragg Coiners. Mytholmroyd is home to Walkley Clogs, one of the last UK producers to make and sell the genuine article. Hebden Bridge has many titles: The Pennine Centre, The Town for Great Little Shops and one of the world s funkiest towns. Expect a creative, feisty place with a fascinating history and a mission for sustainability. An 18th century core and Victorian streets spread from the 16th century packhorse bridge and unique double decker houses hang on the hillsides. From the Visitor and Canal Centre, follow the Rochdale Canal, the first to cross the Pennines. Or walk up to hilltop Heptonstall and explore the magnificent ruins of the Church of St Thomas a Becket and the local museum, now with free admission. Todmorden Against the Pennine ramparts, market town Todmorden is a real character and every bit a border town. Indeed the old Yorkshire - Lancashire border ran through its Grade I listed town hall. Proud to work together, Todmorden is a Fairtrade town and a 2008 Britain in Bloom award winner. A new Plaque Trail tells the story of its communities. Tod Show, in newly restored Centre Vale Park, is a don t miss date.
