1 WSREC presents Roots Scotland Spring / Summer Bulletin April 2016 Events & Days Out For Everyone! A fun filled issue full of information on events being held by Historic Environment Scotland and other historic attractions celebrating 5000 years of Scottish history. FAMILY DAYS OUT JUST 7.24 / MONTH member Introduction Welcome to our eleventh bulletin packed with exciting historical events for the spring and summer This bulletin is organised by West of Scotland Regional Equality Council (WSREC) who is funded by Historic Environment Scotland (formerly known as Historic Scotland) until March The main aim of the project is to raise awareness of Scotland s historic environment to all communities in particular minority communities who have settled in Scotland over the last few years. This bulletin includes details of open events that are running throughout Scotland in the spring and summer months which will mark the celebration of people and places telling the story of a nation with over 5000 years of history. So join us in retracing the footsteps of various historic figures bringing the past to life at castles, palaces and other historic attractions. Read on the fantastic programme which is sure to be an attraction to individuals from all communities regardless of cultural background and also ages. Wander through the castle and experience the grandeur of the architecture and visit the palace of the Renaissance monarch, James V. 5 JUNE 2016 Sat 11 The Rock of Ages 12pm Dumbarton Castle For over 1,000 years Dumbarton Castle has witnessed many changes; social technological and more. Join us to relieve the centuries, from Roman and Vikings to WWI & II, and discover the changes each era brought to Scotland. Join us to watch over 100 performers bring history to life. Visit the blacksmith s forge and discover how blades and bows were made. See how fashions evolved and learn how this magnificent castle has been maintained over the years. (Buy tickets online in advance and save 10%) Sat 11 Trinity am Trinity House Join us to celebrate 200 years of Trinity House and enjoy fun family craft activities and take a tour Leith maritime history. (Free) Sun 12 Dundonald and Bruce 6.30pm Dundonald Castle Step back into 1298 and discover how Robert the Bruce laid-waste to Dundonald Castle during the Scottish Wars of Independence. 6 Thur 23 Scottish Chambers Orchestra 8am Stirling Castle The Scottish Chambers of Orchestra presents a carnival of music expertly lead by Pablo Gonzalez. Expect a spell-binding musical adventure. (Tickets available from Albert Halls Box Office) Thur 30 Danny the Champion of the World 6.30pm Duff House Join Danny and his Father William the most exciting Dad a boy has ever had as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime. (More details on website) JULY 2016 Sat 2 Sun 3 Spectacular Jousting Linlithgow Palace His Grace the King of Scotland invites you to join him and the queen for two days of action and excitement at his royal tournament. Over the weekend you can meet the retinue and cheer on your favourite as they fight for victory. They will battle it out on foot, in archery and in a dazzling display of horsemanship pm Drop in the palace, discover the camps on the Peel and learns more about the weapons and armour in medieval times. Learn about its role in the history of the Inner Forth Estuary and meet the medieval and Covenanter armies. (Included in the admission cost) Sat 24 Holding the Key to Scotland 12pm Stirling Castle The year is 1651 and Stirling Castle is the focus of English military activity in Scotland after the Scots field army marched into England under Charles II. Meet the defenders and hear the roar of their cannon. (Included in the admission cost). All year round Discover the National Museum Various National Museum of Scotland Take an introductory tour around the National Museum of Scotland and discover the stories about selected objects. 11 WSREC West of Scotland Regional Equality Council work in the West of Scotland to promote equal opportunities for minority ethnic communities. Our projects include working with youth groups tackling religiously motivated crime, Central and Eastern European migrants advice and support, working with young Roma communities. WSREC also support community planning partners and other organisations who are trying to bridge the gaps in service provision. We have a number of volunteers with our project and also co-ordinate volunteers through a set project which aims to build capacity for individuals.
