11 Microfilm Inventory of Kincardine Newspapers Kincardine Newspapers History The first newspaper in Kincardine, the Western Canadian Commonwealth, was printed August 4, 1857 and edited by John McLay. The paper included news from Bruce County, Canada, the United States, England and Ireland. It was sold in 1870 and renamed the Bruce Review. A number of changes of ownership and name took place over the years; in the late 1870s it became known as the Kincardine Standard. In 1886, it reverted back to the Review. Kincardine became a two newspaper town in Headmaster Albert Andrews established the Bruce Reporter. The Reporter also had many changes in ownership. One owner, Walter M. Dack, made the Reporter well known throughout the district during his time as a Liberal MPP for Centre Bruce, 1886 to The Clark brothers purchased the Review in Charles sold out to his brother Hugh and moved west where he founded the High River Times. Charles was the grandfather of the Right Honourable Joe Clark and Hugh, in his own right, was a well-known politician and newspaperman. In 1923, it became evident that having two competing newspapers in town was unprofitable for both flip of a coin by the owners decided that the Review Reporter would continue. The Review Reporter carried on until 1931 when its owner, J.J. Hunter, died. His widow kept it going until she was able to sell the paper. William Rupert Davies, president and editor of the Kingston Whig-Standard, bought the paper for his son Fred. Fred was said to have been the black sheep of the family, and it was surmised that William, a successful businessman and Senator, bought the paper for his son to get him out of town. Local historians will always remember Davies as the man who burned all the archived newspapers. There is only the odd copy of papers published before the 1930s still in existence. In 1937, Davies sold the paper to the owners of the Kincardine News, which had been started in During the time these two papers were running, they were hot and heavy into politics the Review representing Liberal views, the Kincardine News supporting the Conservatives. There was no soft pedaling of issues and each paper laid out its position in no uncertain terms.
