4 04 Mail Box Translink Metro Driver Barry Caesar shows great customer service I was taking the 7A bus home from the City Centre after working late in very miserable weather, after my car broke down for the second time in two weeks. The driver gave exemplary customer service to myself and all the passengers on board and made what would have been an otherwise quite miserable journey home very enjoyable. If you are able to pass on my compliments that would be greatly appreciated. R Simpson, Belfast Driver George Scott shows honesty and kindness I travelled on the 1E bus which to my mind was uneventful until I received a phone call from the driver George Scott to inform me that, unbeknown to me, I had left my wallet on the bus. He advised that the bus would be travelling back the same route and arranged to meet me at my local bus stop whereupon he returned my wallet. He is a gentleman and a credit to your organisation and I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to him for his honesty and kindness. H Hagan, Glengormley Kevin Wallace and Susan O Neill deliver important message with the Safety Bus I would like to thank Kevin and Susan for all their support in making Bee Safe a great success. I know the children really enjoyed the safety bus scenario and they have benefited from the important message. The Safety Bus is an integral part of Bee Safe but it is Kevin and Susan s enthusiasm and delivery which makes the sessions so popular. They brought so much to our event both personally and professionally; they are an asset to Translink. A Barton, District Policing Partnership Translink NIRailways Conductor Jonathan McAuley impresses passenger I took the train from Gt Victoria St to Ballymena. When the train stopped at City Hospital 5 inebriated men in their twenties got on and started to sing sectarian songs causing offence to other passengers. I was also fearful for a young woman and her children who were of African ethnicity as one of the men made a derogatory comment. When the train stopped at Central station these males got more boisterous and one fell over. At this point I saw the conductor arriving. Without hesitation or fear he addressed the men and in a firm tone told them to get off the train because they would not be travelling due to their drunken state. He then waited outside so as not to create any confrontation and the men eventually got off. I was extremely impressed by the conductor and hope that an appropriate mention will be made on his personal record as he is deserving of such. F M Norton, Ahoghill Friendly and helpful staff at Carrickfergus station My wife was taken to the City Hospital seriously ill and my dilemma was how does an old fellow like me of 87 years who is only able to walk short distances and generally gets around on a small scooter get from Carrickfergus to visit her. Well going by train was the answer and I wish to convey my very sincere thanks to both the staff at Carrickfergus Station and also the ticket guards who were so friendly and helpful for just over 2 weeks on my daily journey. It was a wonderful service, something I shall never forget. J Sutton, Carrickfergus Enjoyable experience trying the new train My partner and I took up the free offer on your new train from Larne to Belfast. We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks. It was an enjoyable journey and all of your staff were polite and courteous. We are both drivers and have not used the train for over 15 years, however today's journey has changed our mind, and we will use this service in the future. M Shields Translink Ulsterbus Driver Paula McAllister was recently awarded a You are the Difference certificate after these two instances of praise. When I travelled from Belfast to Kilroot the bus was very busy and there were some disabled passengers in wheelchairs who appeared to be with a party of athletes travelling to Jordanstown University. The driver showed considerable care and attention to these people and their carers and assisted them boarding the vehicle. When they were getting off the bus the driver had difficulty with the ramp, she remained calm, unflustered and polite and successfully disembarked the visitors. When she got back on the bus the other passengers showed their appreciation by giving her a round of applause! She should certainly receive recognition for her actions. R Gordon An elderly lady with Alzheimer s went missing from her pensioners fold and there was serious concern that she was not dressed for a cold night and would not survive. The PSNI phoned Gerry Mullan, Service Delivery Manager at Newtownabbey Depot as they had been informed the lady boarded an Ulsterbus driven by a female driver. The driver was Paula McAllister who remembered the lady and was also able to tell the Police where she got off. The Police, the lady s son and members of Whiteabbey Community Group went there and were able to trace her movements and eventually found her unharmed. The Community Group want to pass on their most sincere thanks to Paula as her memory may have saved this lady s life. Whiteabbey Community Group Coach Driver Mark Burns receives thanks for press tour Please pass on my thanks to Mark for really being an excellent driver. I thought he drove really well and I cannot recall there ever being a lurch or sudden stop, which considering some of the roads he was driving on, was quite miraculous! Drivers are really so important in ensuring that the tour goes smoothly, Mark certainly gave the right impression with his helpful and welcoming demeanor. With a fantastic coach, we could not have asked for a better way in which to demonstrate the modern face of coach touring and why going by coach is the best way to travel. Paul Ovington, Coach Tourism Council

5 All in a days work 05 Michelle Rafferty, Rural Transport Development Manager How long have you worked for Translink? I have worked in Translink for over 12 years. I started my career in the organisation as a graduate management trainee and have undertaken bus operational management roles at various depots including Lisburn, Coleraine, and Enniskillen. Since 2007 I have managed the Rural Transport Unit. affecting the bus industry through regular meetings between the DOE and the Federation of Passenger Transport NI. I am also a member of the strategic learning and development project team within the Translink Organisational Development Programme. What is the role of the Rural Transport Unit within Translink? The Rural Transport Unit is the primary contact point between Translink and the Department for Regional Development for all matters relating to subsidies received for rural bus services. What does your role involve? I work closely with key partners in the Department for Regional Development, and other stakeholders in the business sector to continually improve bus services and to increase public transport modal share. I have responsibility for the management of a budget of c. 1million per annum for the operation, marketing, and development of rural Ulsterbus services. This requires comprehensive financial analysis to ensure internal control over the grant-in-aid and appropriate use of public funds. I also oversee the RTF marketing strategy and implementation of promotional campaigns for the subsidised services, which are undertaken by the Rural Transport Development Co-ordinator. In addition I manage the arrangements between Translink and the Community Transport sector in respect of the leasing and maintenance of the fleet of RTF minibuses. What projects are you currently involved with? I represent Translink on the Bus Operator Licensing Review Group which aims to deal with matters What qualifications and skills are particularly helpful to you in your job? My job involves dealing with a wide spectrum of business functions internally and externally, so it s also important to possess good organisational ability. What aspect of your job do you find most challenging? In the current economic climate there are significant challenges posed by financial pressures on the availability of the necessary funds to provide bus services in deep rural areas, so it s vital to continue to grow passenger numbers and attract new passengers in order to sustain the availability of services. What aspect of your job do you most enjoy? I get to experience both the operational side of the business, in terms of involvement in the planning of some front line services, and also be involved in the policy agenda through working with DRD and other Government departments and organisations within the business and community sector.

7 Keeping you connected 07 First new trains enter service New trains Now in service on the Larne Line Launch Event An official launch event was held on 29 September to mark the introduction of the first new train entering service on the Larne line. Transport Minister Danny Kennedy boarded the train and after arriving in Belfast, he addressed a gathered audience at Central Station: When all 20 new trains are introduced into service railway passengers will experience a step-change in service reliability and improved accessibility. Importantly, these new trains will replace all the old fleet currently operating on the network, delivering an overall improved quality of railway services. I am committed to providing a high quality rail service which promotes a sustainable and attractive alternative to the private car. John Trethowan, Chairman of Translink, commented: We are delighted to be launching the first of the new Class 4000 trains into passenger service and are confident that they will help us in our commitment to providing our passengers with modern, reliable and good value travel solutions. We would like to extend a big thank you to the DRD Minister, Danny Kennedy and officials for providing funding to purchase these new trains which will even further improve the service for passengers. Modernisation of Northern Ireland rail services has resulted in over 60% growth in passenger numbers in the last 10 years, culminating in a record 10.4m journeys last year. As the new fleet is rolled out we hope that even greater numbers of people choose the train. New Trains Two Programme To date, three of the new Class 4000 trains which Translink took delivery of earlier this year have completed the extensive testing programme that is required under European regulations and are now available for passenger service with a further two trains approaching final testing. Translink expects that all 20 of the trains will be fully commissioned and in service during In addition to the introduction of the new Class 4000 trains, the 150million New Trains Two Programme will also include the construction of a new train maintenance facility at Adelaide as well as the extension of some platforms to accommodate the new trains. Marketing Campaign A range of marketing activity is taking place to mark the arrival of the New Trains on the Larne Line. In October a household mailing targeted homes along the Larne line close to rail stations. The mailing included a timetable and a 50% off voucher to encourage trial of the new trains at peak commuter times. Another initiative to entice people to try the new trains was a free trains fun-day event between Larne and Great Victoria Street on 29 October; entertainment included live music plus goodie bags and face-painting for children. People who wouldn t normally travel by train were encouraged to try the new Class 4000 trains by availing of a complimentary ticket. A new advertising campaign (pictured above) was also launched at the end of October with the simple strap-line Try the Train. The creative shows images of typical passengers such as business people, students, leisure travellers and families. It aims to encourage existing passengers and potential new rail users along the Larne Line to try the new trains and experience the benefits. The advertising targets people living in the area via regional press and outdoor advertising. Pictured: (1.) Children enjoying face-painting at the free trains fun-day event. (2.) 12 12 News Youth Conference Service Translink works hard with local communities and other statutory organisations to help build a better society for everyone. We work to deliver a number of initiatives which will have a positive impact for all. One such initiative is the Youth Conference Service, which is delivered in partnership with the Youth Justice Agency. Youth Conferencing is about giving young offenders the opportunity to both understand the harm caused by their offences and make amends to their victims, family and community. It also assists with taking steps to avoid offending in the future. Our involvement is with young people who have vandalised our property or made a bus or rail journey unsafe for passengers, who then wish to make amends for their behaviour. These young people work closely with our Community Safety Team on a restorative project. In return we educate them on the impact and consequences of their actions. As part of this service employees across the company act as corporate victims as well as mentoring the young offenders. Over the last 12 months we have dealt with 10 referrals from the Youth Justice Agency of which 6 cases are now complete, with the remaining 4 cases still pending. Speaking about the initiative Damien Bannon, Translink Metro Service Delivery Manager, explains: Our participation in the Youth Conference Service is just one way we try and address antisocial behaviour towards public transport. By taking part in this scheme it has helped us to engage directly with the local community. We hope that the young people will learn from their time with us and in turn share their experiences and lessons learned with their peers. The scheme has proved to be very successful as the re-offending rates for those youths participating in the scheme over the last 5 years is zero. This is also evident in our own results which highlight a year on year reduction in reported antisocial activities over the last 8 years from a peak of 2000 in 2002 to 500 in These figures are a clear endorsement of the scheme and the efforts of the community safety team. Taking the lead on the scheme is Susan O Neill, Translink Community Safety Team and she explains her role: From my previous bus driving experience I am very aware of the stress and impact that stone throwing and other antisocial activities can have on drivers and passengers. By acting as the corporate victim at conferences I can use my personal experiences to explain to those involved the dangers and hurt caused by their actions so that they can fully appreciate the consequences. It is also a very visible way of reassuring driving staff of Translink s commitment towards tackling this issue and ensures that those intent on causing damage and harm to employees, passengers and vehicles are brought to account. In addition to Youth Conferencing our Community Safety Team are also involved in delivering safety messages to around 25,000 school children / young people each year through a number of initiatives to include: Bee Safe Campaign: an inter agency campaign ran in the 24 council district in Northern Ireland for all Year 7 pupils. Year 8 induction for all secondary schools in the greater Belfast area. Diversionary activities and developing relationships with youths in hot spot areas. All employees are encouraged to report any incidents as they might be eligible for a reward from the Company Reward Scheme if their evidence leads to a successful prosecution. For further information on the Youth Conference Service visit:

13 This time its personal 13 Trevor McFarland, Captain of Newtownstewart Golf Club Trevor McFarland, who works as an auto electrician at the Ulsterbus Garage in Omagh, is the Captain of Newtownstewart Golf Club, Co Tyrone. When did you start playing golf? I took up golf in 1985, my sister worked as the bar steward at the club and I did some casual work there. I was persuaded to give it a go and of course got hooked! I ve been a member of Newtownstewart Golf Club for 26 years now. How were you selected to be Captain? I became Captain in January 2011, following a year as Vice Captain. The Captain selects his successor and I was selected by Luke Donnelly. Prior to this I had served 6 years in the council and been juvenile convenor. How is the club run and what are your duties as Captain? The club is run by a board of trustees who delegate responsibility to the Council; this is an elected body from the membership who are appointed at the AGM. The Captain, President, Vice Captain and Vice President fulfil the main role with the support of office bearers and convenors. The life of the club is very busy and many hours are given to chairing meetings of the Council and attending various committees. There is also work involved in identifying sponsorship and fundraising for the development of the club. This year we have improved some of the holes on the course and built a skills practice area. There is strong social element to the job with prize giving events and supporting representative club teams as they compete at courses throughout Northern Ireland and of course the big events of Captains day and Presidents day. It takes a real team effort to make things work! How often do you play? Three to four times per week or as my wife says too often. I mainly play in Newtownstewart, which is set in the Baronscourt Estate, and boasts great scenery and a rich wildlife of deer and pheasants which can compensate during a bad round. This year I ve tried to play in different fourballs just to get to know more members. I do have a regular partnership for team events, led by Eugene Corry. Have you ever had a hole in one? I can claim credit to 3. What is your golf handicap? I play off 9 now, but was as low as 6. What competitions have you taken part in? I mainly play club and charity events in Newtownstewart and the wider North West. I have also been Captain of the Ulster Cup and The Jimmy Bruen, which are GUI competitive events across Northern Ireland. I ve won quite a few golf competitions over the years but never the much coveted Captains day or Presidents day. What upcoming events are you involved in with the club? The club fundraising Christmas events are next, with the annual draw and turkey bingo. The club is also planning for its Centenary in 2014 and we have set up a committee to plan for this. I hand over to Ronnie Jack the current Vice Captain in January phew! What would be your dream course to play? My all time favourite is Prestatyn in Wales which I ve played many times but if I could play a dream course then it would have to be Augusta National. Which of the top golfers do you most admire and why? Seve Ballesteros is a legend his touch, skill and ability to make the miraculous shot at the right time, of course his charisma and contribution to the European Ryder Cup and the world of golf in general set him apart for me. I was very touched by his humble acceptance of his greatness in his final interview on BBC with Peter Alice. Pictured: Trevor was joined on Captains Day by his wife Karen and son Robin.

14 14 News Coleraine to Derry rail line relay The Minister for Regional Development has given details to the Assembly of the additional funding which will allow the acceleration of essential engineering work on the Coleraine to Derry rail line. Group Chief Executive, Catherine Mason, recently reported: Many within the company have been heavily involved in preparing various scenarios for this line over time. We were all disappointed when the well configured plans for a full relay were not funded by the last Executive and announced by DRD as part of the final budget in April As soon as it became apparent that some funding might now be made available to this line our infrastructure team have been working hard to develop an innovative engineering solution to best fit any new funding made available. I think it is worth highlighting the professionalism and expertise of Translink people who have advised DRD and which has made this decision possible. The engineering work commences the necessary relay of the rail line and will mean that instead of the planned 5 return rail journeys per day for 2013 there will be 8 when this phase of the work is completed at the end of March Work to complete the full relay and upgrade of the track will then take place after Now that the funding is in place there is a still a very demanding schedule involving complex tendering and compliance with procurement rules to facilitate the start of the design work in March Making decisions and getting approvals on time will be critical if this phase of work is to be completed by end of March 2013; this represents a significant challenge. The schedule of work to complete the relay is now in 3 phases: Phase 1. Track closure from July 2012 to end of March 2013 for the full relay of the lines between Coleraine to Castlerock and Eglinton to Londonderry, including necessary repairs to all bridge works in these sections. In addition, track safety improvement works will include new continuously welded rail on the section between Castlerock and Eglinton, the top up of ballast and removal of ballast wet beds. This will result in the provision of 8 return trips per day. Phase 2. Re-signalling of the line between Coleraine and Derry and a new passing loop; no (full) closure of the line will be required for this work. It is planned to complete this work in 2015 and it will result in the provision of an hourly service. Phase 3. Finally, it is planned to complete the full relay of the track between Castlerock and Eglinton in 2021.

Pictured: Richard Godfrey, Executive Producer of the 2011 MTV EMAs, viewed the city centre arrangements as Belfast geared up for the music extravaganza. Businesses across Northern Ireland are being urged to sign up to TaxSmart, a Translink initiative which offers employees savings of up to 31% on the cost of annual Metro and Ulsterbus travel through a salary sacrifice scheme. A number of local organisations are already taking advantage of the initiative, which sees reduced income tax and national insurance contributions made by employee s as annual bus travel is paid directly from their salary. The overall cost of running a car is up by 21% in the last year with increases in fuel, insurance and parking, therefore Translink are urging companies to sign up to TaxSmart to allow their employees to avail of unlimited, discounted bus travel. Three types of TaxSmart cards are available providing unlimited travel across Metro, Ulsterbus or combined Metro and Ulsterbus services. Employees can take advantage of discounted travel after an employer has signed up to TaxSmart and Translink is encouraging more businesses to take advantage of the cost savings available through this scheme. You are the Difference Paula McAllister a Driver from Translink s Newtownabbey Depot was recently presented with a You are the Difference certificate after receiving two very appreciative compliments from passengers (see page 4 Mail Box). Gerry Mullan, Service Delivery Manager, also presented Paula with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her continued ability to carry out her job extremely well.

18 18 Health & Wellbeing Go Healthy Translink supports the health and wellbeing of employees and as our go healthy drive continues you have raised a variety of questions Lisa Montgomery, HSE Department, provides some answers. I know that I should be getting my eyesight tested regularly, and visit the dentist more often. But how often is regularly? In Northern Ireland fewer than half of us have seen a dentist in the past two years or had regular eye-tests. If you can t remember your dentist s name, or how often you should go, it s time to start keeping a note of your health checks. Eye Test every two years, even if you don t wear glasses Dentist every six months I keep hearing on TV and radio that I should be eating at least 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables each day. What counts as a portion? 5 A DAY is based on advice from the World Health Organization, which recommends eating a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day to lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and obesity. To get the most benefit out of your 5 A DAY, you should include a variety of fruit and vegetables as they all contain different combinations of fibre, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. A portion could be: 1 whole apple, banana, orange or pear 2 whole kiwi fruits, plums tangerines or satsumas 1 heaped tablespoon of mixed dried fruit raisins or sultanas 3 heaped tablespoons of vegetables raw, cooked, frozen or tinned 2 florets of broccoli or cauliflower 1 carrot, leek, parsnip or onion 150ml of pure fruit juice 1 dessert bowl of salad I ve seen the recent TV advertisements about binge drinking. What exactly is binge drinking and how much is too much? You may think of binge drinking as drinking continually for a couple of days or more, or drinking until you fall over. But, in fact, many of us in Northern Ireland binge drink regularly at weekends. Binge drinking is defined as drinking at least 10 units of alcohol in one session for men (e.g. five pints of lager) and at least 7 units for women (e.g. three small glasses of red wine and a couple of measures of vodka). Research shows that drinking this much in one session can damage your health, even if you still drink less than the recommended 21 units for men and 14 units for woman in total during the week. Due to commitments at home I have very little time to prepare a packed lunch the night before. How can I make a healthier lunch in work so I can stop buying ready meals and pre-packed sandwiches? As most of us know not planning in advance what we eat often leads to the temptation to eat fast and convenient food which is higher in fat and sugars and lower in nutritional value. You could consider using your work microwave for a healthy jacket potato rather than heating a ready-meal and serve with cottage cheese, baked beans, tuna or salad. You could also bring in some salad at the beginning of the week along with ham or chicken and bread to make your own healthy sandwich during your lunch break. Low fat jelly, yoghurt drinks, small pots of custard or rice pudding also provide a tasty dessert and are good alternatives to more sugary or fatty options.

19 News 19 Park & Ride Developments Park & Ride is a key priority for Translink. We want to provide our customers with integrated and convenient travel solutions, these facilities let our customers use the car for the first leg of their journey then easily transfer onto a bus, coach or train. This means passengers can make more of their time, relax and avoid the stress of sitting in frustrating traffic congestion; and if travelling by coach take advantage of bus priority measures during the journey. Finaghy Park & Ride facility upgrade Translink NIRailways in partnership with Roads Service NI has completed the upgrading of its latest Park & Ride facility, at Finaghy train station. This work is part of an investment package to improve the grounds and facilities at stations throughout Northern Ireland. The extended facility now has 36 spaces, which includes 3 disabled parking spaces. The new facilities have been equipped with CCTV, additional lighting and a cycle shelter. Gerry McAtarsney, Southern Area Route Manager said: Having great Park & Ride facilities like these for our customers is all part of our drive to provide good value, attractive integrated travel solutions. This new facility should help to encourage even more local people to avail of the regular train services that operate through Finaghy. We would also encourage more consumers to try the service to help reduce their fuel costs and car parking fees. New Ballygawley Park & Ride/Share Situated near Ballygawley roundabout at the junction of the A4 and A5 in Co Tyrone this new facility provided by DRD Roads Service offers local commuters travelling to and from Dungannon, Enniskillen, Omagh, Derry, Belfast and Dublin safe and convenient off-road parking. It also features a dedicated bus shelter and bus stop for easy transfer from private car to bus services. There are 73 car-parking spaces including 6 accessible bays. Launching the facility, Robert Magill, Translink Service Delivery Manager, said: The combined services for Ballygawley offer a half hourly frequency during peak periods and hourly during off peak. We have worked closely with Roads Service to deliver this facility and hope that more local people will take advantage of Park & Ride services. Carrickfergus Park & Ride extended Transport Minister Danny Kennedy and Translink Group Chief Executive, Catherine Mason, recently marked the official opening of the newly extended Carrickfergus Train Station Park & Ride. The extension to 295 spaces has created an additional 169 car parking spaces at the site, including 15 bays for people with reduced mobility. Danny Kennedy said: "This investment of around 800,000 extends the Carrickfergus Train Station Park & Ride facility, with 295 spaces now available for commuters to use. I hope this new facility will encourage more people in the area to choose the train, as well as helping to accommodate growing passenger numbers and alleviate traffic congestion in the local area. In recent years, the number of sites and spaces have been increased and are extensively used by the travelling public right across the network. New Park & Ride/Share sites have also recently opened at Portadown Road, Armagh and Crevenagh Road, Omagh. There are now over 5,135 Park & Ride/ Share spaces at sites around Northern Ireland. 20 20 News Waste Management and Recycling In 2009 Translink entered into a contract with general waste contractor, Wastebeater. This contract has produced a number of environmental benefits with the main factor being the obvious increase in our recycling rate. Our current recycling rate is 71%, which is a 61% increase in the amount of materials being recycled since the contract began. Prior to this contract our recycling rate was only 10%. The contract has allowed us to meet our duty of care in managing waste, not only responsibly but effectively, and these figures clearly highlight the significant improvements which have been made. Wastebeater, a leader in Northern Ireland s waste management industry, collects general waste from over 80 Translink locations. General waste is considered as items such as drink cans and bottles, cardboard, paper, glass, wood etc. Through the use of new specialist Near Infra Red technology our waste is automatically separated off-site at Wastebeater s Materials Recover Facility. This means that no further separation of materials is required throughout our facilities, saving us space, costs, and unnecessary work. Exceptions to this is where we would have scrap metals, large volumes of food waste, or indeed if any location required a large volume of any material to be disposed of. Materials collected from our sites are made into a wide variety of items. For example cardboard and paper extracted from our general waste is sent to paper mills where it may be re-processed into products such as recycled cardboard, newsprint or other paper products. Recycled plastic film is cleaned, pelletised and re-formed into products such as carrier bags, and shrink-wrap. Speaking about the contract Andy Bate, Group Environmental Manager commented: Our recycling scheme improves sustainability and environmental management within Translink and we are delighted to be working with Wastebeater who are helping us play our part in providing a better environment for all. Paul Byrne the Director of Wastebeater states The technology that we use allows us to recycle a greater percentage of the waste that we collect. We hope one day to have zero waste going to landfill and we believe this can be achieved over a relatively short period of time.

Posters of the map were distributed to all Ulsterbus Service Delivery Managers for display on rural bus shelters in their designated areas. Framed poster maps were also issued to key stakeholders throughout Northern Ireland, including DRD Transport Divisions, Roads Service, Tourist Information Centre s, Councils, Health & Social Care Trusts and Education & Library Boards. Employee: Thomas McCaughley, Shunter, Falls Depot Suggestion: A speed reducing system (i.e. ramps) in the wash area of depots. Thomas suggested introducing a speed reducing system in the form of ramps in the wash area of depots to help slow buses to a near stop when they are being washed. The aim of the initiative is to help reduce the number of broken mirrors and arms as well as minimising the risk of damage to the front of the bus. In addition it would also prevent dirty lines from forming down the rear of the bus. This suggestion will now be trialled at the Falls Depot with the potential of it being rolled out to other depots if it is found to be successful. Employee: James Mawhinney, Former Technician ( now retired), York Road Workshops Suggestion: Make a trolley to lift, position and fit train wheel bearings James idea involved the construction of a trolley to lift, position and fit train wheel bearings. Laurence Deane, Workshop Production Engineer explained the rationale behind the idea When fitting a wheel bearing the operator has to manhandle them into position. As the bearings each weigh 30kg there is a serious risk of back and other stress related injuries. As a result James designed a lifting device to lift, transport and position the bearings removing the lifting dangers as well as making the process easier and quicker. In addition there were no costs associated with his idea as all the materials used were recycled from scrap. James Erwin, New Trains Two Project Manager, commented I have personally tested this device for handling axle bearings and found it to be an excellent idea, which has now been fully implemented. Although specific to railway axle bearings, there are several hundred of these fitted each year in York Road so it has proved to be most useful. It has not only helped to reduce the risk of injury to the operator but has also reduced the risk of damage to the bearing. A successful suggestion could earn you up to 1000 in gift vouchers for a range of stores - so why not get thinking and fill in a form. Forms are available from your line manager/supervisor or downloadable from the intranet under Milesbetter in Employee Information. 25 Nature Notes 25 Stay safe at level crossings Embracing Biodiversity Translink NIRailways is reminding the owners of private railway crossings, or user worked crossings, to take care during autumn and winter as the darker evenings can lead to reduced visibility for crossing users. Keith Pollock, Level Crossing Risk Coordinator, said: The weather has been relatively poor this summer and we recognise that farmers are working around the weather patterns and to tight deadlines to gather their harvest; however we would encourage user worked crossings users to put a safe system in place when using their crossings and to stick to it. Translink NIRailways has been working closely with farmers and landowners around Northern Ireland to maintain high safety levels at user worked crossings and has carried out the installation of CCTV at crossings to detect misuse. In addition, Translink has been running a programme of crossing closures, working closely with landowners to identify alternative access points. In the past 12 months we have closed 35 crossings and are currently negotiating the closure of a further 12 crossings due to be closed before the end of March concluded Keith. Pictured: (l-r) Keith Pollock and Ian Morrow from Translink NIRailways at a meeting with Ulster Farmers Union members Robert Craig, Alex McLoughlan, George Canning, John Dodds and Robert Cochrane. Translink have recently appointed a new Biodiversity Officer, Breanainn Mullan, who joins us from Queen s University Belfast on placement year from her degree course, Land Use and Environmental Management. Breanainn will be focusing on further implementation of Translink s Biodiversity Action Plan, now in its third year, and will be working with a number of employees across Translink departments as employee engagement and involvement is an essential element. Autumn/Winter is the ideal time to plan and undertake projects that are beneficial for wildlife, for example planting native trees and hedgerows in and around Translink property. Breanainn has a variety of events and projects to plan in the next few months: Invasive Species surveying and awareness throughout the company. Corporate Volunteering if there is any department or team of employees who would be keen to volunteer in some activities to enhance biodiversity, please contact Breanainn. If you have any sightings of wildlife you would like to report, or have any queries or questions about the project or biodiversity in general, Breanainn would be happy to hear from you. Breanainn.Mullan@translink.co.uk, or Tel: Top Tip: Encourage and support biodiversity by inserting insect boxes and twig bundles in your garden to create homes where insects can survive the cold months. Let us know if you are taking part! We would like to profile employees as they prepare for next year s event. Please contact the Marketing Department on ext Pictured: Mark Obsorne, Duncrue Street Engineering, who completed the marathon in As Translink s Go Eco campaign continues, Philip Reid, Energy Engineer and Mark Richardson, Building Services Technician, take some time out to explain the recently implemented Invest to Save Project. The 500k project has involved the installation of energy efficient lighting as a replacement for the aging lighting systems at 35 locations across the network. The aim of the project was to not only deliver substantial energy and cost savings but also improve light levels. The project was delivered in partnership with the Energy Team working together to identify the most suitable products and design, and the Property Department managing the scheme. Installation work began in April and was recently completed in November; this has involved the introduction of daylight saving and motion detection lighting at various Translink locations, which will offer the best energy savings and improved lighting levels. Initial results are already very positive. From to April to September overall energy savings of 15% or 220,000kWk have been made totalling 18,000. Savings are set to continue and improve as the project has now been completed. This couldn t have come at a better time as our electricity prices have increased by 30%; these savings will help us to remain efficient and competitive in our business. In terms of carbon savings this equates to 120 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which would be the equivalent CO2 emissions of running a train for more than a month or running Bangor Station for a year. The plan is to extend this project to other Translink locations, as well as working together to identify other mechanical and electrical services that may have potential for energy and cost savings. Pictured: (l-r) Mark Richardson, Building Services Technician, and Philip Reid, Energy Engineer, are involved in the implementation of the Invest to Save Project.
