6 Living in High Wycombe Quality of life is about the details of everyday living. From the little things, like knowing the nearest place to pick up a pint of milk, to more important matters like finding the right school or having a health centre nearby, you need to know that the community you re moving to will support you and your family, as well as be a pleasant place to live. So here s some useful information about the area around High Wycombe. 02 Aspect

7 Local Roots Some say High Wycombe means the wooded valley on the Wye, others that it s from the Old English Wicum, a settlement. Either way, its history dates back at least to Roman times. Plentiful beech woods helped it become a celebrated centre of furniture making (in 1875 it was reckoned that the town produced 4,700 chairs every day). One unique local custom, still carried on, is the annual public weighing of the mayor to see whether he has put on weight at the expense of the people. The outcome is announced by the town crier. Transport Aspect is within twenty five minutes walk of both the town centre and the railway station. Fast rail services to London Marylebone take around 30 minutes, and M40 junction 4 is only around two miles away. Recreation Less than a mile to the north of Aspect, the vast Hughenden Park offers magnificent views, riverside walks and a children s play area. The town s historic common, the Rye, is now a popular park with a newlyrefurbished Lido club, while Wycombe Sports Centre provides excellent fitness, gym and indoor swimming facilities. Shopping High Wycombe s lively market town ambience is complemented by the modern Eden shopping centre, with its cafés, restaurants and wide range of high street retailers. The large Morrisons and Sainsbury supermarkets close to Aspect both offer late night opening. Education & Health Several GP practices and dental surgeries can be found nearby, and Wycombe Hospital provides 24-hour emergency facilities. The closest of several primaries within the area, the Disraeli School has an excellent reputation. Secondary schools within one mile include the Royal Grammar School and the private Wycombe Abbey school, and the High Wycombe campus of Bucks New University is located in the town centre. Entertainment There is a selection of contemporary, cosmopolitan restaurants and cafés in and around the town, and several bars within half a mile of Aspect. The Swan Theatre presents an eclectic programme ranging from drama and West End hits to comedy, rock and classical music, and the Eden Centre includes a 12-screen Cineworld and a bowling centre. More unusual attractions include the bizarre Hell Fire Caves, where a series of haunted, historic tunnels and caverns lead to a most unlikely subterranean banqueting hall. At the junction immediately after a zebra crossing, follow signs for Aylesbury through a series of roundabouts to join the A40, then carry on past a large Sainsbury s store on the right. At the next traffic lights, turn right into The Pastures. Take the first right into Garratts Way and follow the road as it curves round to the left. The entrance to Aspect is on the left.
