Dunfermline and West Fife The soaring vault of Dunfermline Abbey is a fitting resting place for the bones of King Robert the Bruce. The abbey was founded in 1072 and it s impossible not to admire its stunning Romanesque architecture. How did the son of a poor handloom weaver become the richest man in the world and the most generous philanthropist? Find out at the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum in Dunfermline. Buckle up that seatbelt and try karting at Knockhill Racing Circuit, Scotland s National Motorsport Centre. Get up close to sand tiger sharks, conger eels, stingrays and more at Deep Sea World in North Queensferry, Scotland s national aquarium. Kirkcaldy and Mid-Fife For a lively programme of theatre, dance and music, head to the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy. Kinghorn packs a lot of fun into a small place here you can stroll along two lovely sandy beaches, tee off on a challenging 18-hole golf course and enjoy coarse fishing and canoeing on a pretty loch. On a green slope overlooking Kinghorn Loch you ll find the UK s first Earthship, a solar-powered educational and research centre made entirely from natural and recycled materials. Pop into the Harbourmaster s House in Dysart before you start your journey along the Fife Coastal Path. Pack a tasty picnic and go for a wander around the stunning loch or take a bike ride along the park s network of woodland trails. Levenmouth If you re a golfer you ll appreciate the quality of Lundin Links Golf Course, an Open Championship Final Qualifying course. See how many species you can spot on the nature trails in Leven at Letham Glen and Silverburn Park. East Neuk They dot the coast like pearls on a chain the fishing villages of Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem, St Monans and Elie are just a few of the gems waiting for you to discover them. They lie in the famous East Neuk of Fife, the region s beautiful eastern corner. Head on over to the award-winning Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther then explore the charming local galleries in Pittenweem. You now have top secret security clearance to descend into Scotland s Secret Bunker, the 24,000 sq ft command centre where Scotland would have been governed in the event of nuclear war. You ll never run out of ways to enjoy this natural playground with walking trails, cycling routes and a magnificent coastal path, which runs for miles around the sparkling coastline. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon in one of Fife s beautiful parks, such as Pittencrieff in Dunfermline, Victorian Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy or Craigtoun Park near St Andrews. Let the sea breeze ruffle your hair on a scenic walk along the Fife Coastal Path. You can cruise the coastline for 117 miles from Kincardine to Newburgh with sandy beaches, attractive fishing villages and curious wildlife for you to discover. Dig out your crabbing net and an old cricket bat and head to one of Fife s stunning beaches for the day. Wander along miles of golden sands at Elie Ruby Bay, Kingdom Pettycur Bay, St Andrews West Sands and Elie Harbour. Saddle up and pedal out on more than 300 miles of cycle paths from coast to countryside on the Fife Cycleways a great way to explore the region. Here s an idea for a mini-adventure take a boat trip in the summer months from Anstruther out to the Isle of May. This fascinating island was previously used by monks, Vikings and smugglers and is home to one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland. It s also home to colonies of puffins and seals. Roam the lovely trails in the Lomond Hills Regional Park and discover geological marvels such as the bizarrely shaped Bonnet Stane and Carlin Maggie s Stane. The East and West Lomond Hills are the highest points in Fife and you ll find you can t help gazing for ages at the wonderful view when you get to the top. A paradise for animals and humans alike that s Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve at Eden Esturay, near Leuchars. Tread quietly you can expect to meet wildfowl in the pine forest and seals on the long sandy beach. Pause and smell the fragrant aroma of the beautiful sunken rose garden at Hill of Tarvit Mansionhouse & Garden. Then go squirrel spotting in the woodland or climb the hill to enjoy fantastic views. Get your heart pumping with an action-packed day down at the beach. Adventure company Blown Away, in St Andrews offer all kinds of beach activities, from land yachting and stand up paddle boarding to kayaking and riding the waves in a high speed Zapcat.

7 a perfect playground 5 Highlights Ever been to a snowdrop festival? It s truly wonderful, and there s one every spring at Cambo Estate, Kingsbarns. You may spot bottlenose dolphins frolicking in the Firth of Forth from the Fife Coastal Path. Known as a dragonfly hot spot, head to the Morton Loch National Nature Reserve at Tentsmuir, where you can also spot kingfishers and seals. Lochore Meadows Country Park Did you know? In 2013 a pair of rare whitetailed sea eagles became the first to raise a chick in the east of Scotland in almost 200 years. Follow the Red Squirrel Trail in Devilla Forest, Kincardine. Don t miss... Remember your binoculars on a walk around the charming Kinghorn Loch there is lots of wildlife to spot. Take a short walk up Binn Hill in Burntisland for stunning panoramic coastal views across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh & The Lothians. See how many species of migrating birds you can spot at the Fife Ness Muir Wildlife Reserve, by Crail. Craigtoun Country Park, St Andrews At Falkland Estate, follow the Maspie Den paths through the forest to the Yad waterfall and the Tyndall Bruce Monument, which offers glorious views of the Fife countryside and beyond.

8 6 the kingdom of fife great golf Enthusiastic novice? Seasoned professional? Or a happy hacker? Whatever your talents, you ll be in golf heaven in Fife. You could tee off on a different course every Saturday for a year, from dangerously difficult links to charming inland courses. It s thanks to St Andrews that the game as we know it exists today, and it s here that you ll find the jewel in the crown and spiritual home of the game, the Old Course. Famed worldwide, the Old Course is confirmed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest golf course in the world. It hosts The Open Championship every five years. You can play on this legendary course yourself, but you must book in advance. The Old and New courses in St Andrews that we see today were created by Old Tom Morris who is celebrated for his pioneering work in course architecture. He was also a fantastic golfer, setting the Open record as the oldest champion, at the age of 46, in Children and adults can have plenty of fun tackling the humps and bumps of the Himalayas putting course, located next to the second tee of the Old Course. Here s a hidden gem of a golf course the old Balcomie Links by Crail. Set in a rugged corner of the coast, the course was laid out by Old Tom Morris. Test your skills over the rocky bays and on the long par 3s with greens perched right on top of the vertical cliffs. The par 4 fifth hole is one of the most challenging, and is appropriately named, Hell s Hole. For a modern links challenge, try Kingsbarns Golf Links, often voted one of the world s top 100 courses. 9 great golf 7 Did you know? The Old Course in St Andrews was the first golf course to have 18 holes, and this is now the world standard. Kingsbarns Golf Course discover more courses Lundin Links its fine links fairways and beautiful greens were redesigned by James Braid in Forrester Park in Dunfermline a magnificent 18-hole course set in ancient parkland. Ladybank, Cairneyhill a charming heathland course set amongst pine trees, silver birch and heather. Anstruther a hidden gem offering stunning views of Anstruther harbour, the Bass Rock and the Isle of May. Kirkcaldy Golf Club an attractive 18-hole parkland course. Scotscraig a mix of heathland and links, an enjoyable, yet testing course in Tayport. Leven the Leven Golfing Society is the 11th oldest golf club in the world. Balbirnie Park, Markinch a fine example of the best in traditional parkland design. highlights Putt with period clubs and balls then browse the exhibitions and wonderful visual displays at the British Golf Museum in St Andrews. Give your game a tune-up from the swing doctors at the St Andrews Links Golf Academy. The 9-hole Balgove Course in St Andrews is ideal for youngsters and beginners who will still be challenged by shallow bunkers, undulating greens and wide fairways. Play traditional golf with hickory clubs at Kingarrock at Hill of Tarvit, near Cupar. Enjoy a round at Elie, the course James Braid learnt to play on. In the 11th century, King Malcolm III established Dunfermline as Scotland s capital. intriguing heritage Kirkcaldy Old Kirk and Kirk Wynd Do you love a good yarn? History drips from the very stones of our buildings and you can hear the stories of ancestors wherever you go. Explore the many castles, palaces and museums scattered throughout the region and uncover the remarkable history of this unique corner of Scotland. Its nave is now grassy and open to the elements, but it s easy to imagine St Andrews Cathedral in all its pomp as Scotland s largest and most magnificent church. Climb the 33 m high St Rule s Tower, built around 1130, for sweeping views of the town and coastline. While you re in St Andrews make sure you visit the castle. It was once the official residence of Scotland s leading bishop and has a very scary bottle dungeon. Duck your head and step inside the 18th century Harbourmaster s House at Dysart, for a hands-on history lesson in the business arts of salt and coal trading. Lobster creels, floats and fishing nets are stacked on the quayside, overlooked by the wind-worn cottages and merchants houses that huddle around the old stone harbours. That s a typical scene that you can enjoy in the harbours of the East Neuk s picturesque fishing villages. Explore the Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries offering a new museum, gallery spaces, cafe, shop and reading rooms - all adjoining the world s first Carnegie Library. Learn more about the town s ancient history and heritage through impressive exhibitions and displays. Fishing has been the lifeblood of the East Neuk for generations and you can learn more about how it shaped the local people s lives at the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther. Need a moment of sanctuary in this busy world? Find it in magnificent Dunfermline Abbey, the final resting place of many Scottish kings and queens. The legendary Robert the Bruce is one of the royals sleeping here minus his heart, which is buried in Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders. Take time to explore the abbey complex including the ruins of a palace built by King James VI in the 16th century that became a home for his queen, Anne of Denmark Make a mini-pilgrimage of your own down the 87 steps to St Margaret s Cave, Dunfermline, where the canonised Queen Margaret of Scotland would go to pray over 900 years ago.

11 intriguing heritage 9 Follow the footsteps of medieval pilgrims on a tour of Fife s key pilgrimage sites. Tour companies Discover Dunfermline Tours and Forth Pilgrim will happily guide you through key moments in almost 900 years of Scotland s history. Tucked into the Lomond foothills and set in the heart of a medieval village you ll find the royal Falkland Palace and Garden. This is a true hidden gem which was used as a hunting lodge for several Scottish monarchs including Mary Queen of Scots. Today you can enjoy its French-influenced Renaissance architecture, beautifully reconstructed rooms, peaceful palace gardens and the world s oldest real tennis court, which was built in 1539! Step back in time to the 16th and 17th centuries as you stroll around the beautiful Royal Burgh of Culross, not far from Dunfermline. Walk along pretty cobbled streets in this historic village and admire the beautiful ochre-coloured Culross Palace. Kellie Castle and Garden is beautiful inside and out you can see fabulous paintings and tapestries then stroll round the glorious gardens. Here s a fantastic fact the 5th Earl of Kellie hid in a burnt-out tree stump in the grounds of the castle for an entire summer following the Battle of Culloden in 1746! St Monans Windmill is a living reminder of Fife s former booming salt industry. This late 18th-century salt mill was used to pump sea water into special evaporation pans before they were heated. Reputedly no stone castle in Scotland has been standing longer than Aberdour Castle. Explore its ancient corridors and stretch your legs with a walk round its beautiful walled garden and grounds. See for yourself why saints sought out the peace of St Fillan s Cave in Pittenweem as a haven. The cave gave Pittenweem its name, pit being the Pictish word for place and weem meaning cave. The first ever mention of Scotch whisky was at Lindores Abbey, Newburgh in Explore the all new visitor centre which uncovers the site of the earliest written reference to Scotch whisky production. The centre boasts three stills from the Forsyths of Rhothes and hosts exhibitions and events throughout the year. Highlights Forth Bridge this architectural gem was awarded UNESCO World Heritage site status in For the best view head to North Queensferry or hop on a train going across the bridge. Enjoy a family day out at the oldest free traditional games in Scotland, held every year at the end of June in Ceres. Talk about romantic wander the stunning gardens of Wemyss Castle and you can easily imagine Mary Queen of Scots meeting her husband Lord Darnley amid the blooming flower beds. Ravenscraig Castle, Kirkcaldy was built to make enemies falter. You can see how in the fort s towering facade, 3.5 m-thick walls and commanding views of the Firth of Forth. Admire St Andrews imposing medieval city gate, the West Port. Built in 1589, the West Port is one of the last medieval city gates left in Scotland. Well, Fife is a truly exceptional outdoor playground, and it s ready and waiting for you to spring into action. Fife is heaven for golfers, but the great game is by no means the only sport available in this action-packed part of Scotland. A quick look at the map will show you Fife has miles and miles of beautiful coastline, making it an ideal destination for sailing. Set sail from attractive coastal towns such as Anstruther, Newburgh, Kinghorn, Tayport and Wormit and you can choose between weekday, weekend, group and individual sessions. The Firth of Forth has been one of Scotland s most important shipping areas for centuries and this has left some fascinating wreck dive sites. You can choose from many providers that offer training and guided dives such as the Divebunker based at Burntisland. Leave the everyday world far behind and explore Fife on foot along 117 miles of the Fife Coastal Path. Grab your kit and head to Townhill Country Park, north of Dunfermline for a game of tennis, cricket, football or even croquet. This tranquil country park is also home to Waterski & Wakeboard Scotland, a custom-built site. With worldclass boats and state-of-the-art Relaxing at Pittenweem harbour facilities, beginners and experts alike will have a brilliant time here. You can also take advantage of the convenient public transport links. By road The A92 road runs diagonally through the region forming a useful spine that you can use to access many sights and attractions. There are also many well-signposted scenic routes linking the smaller towns and villages. Fife has around 300 miles of on and off-road cycle routes bring your own or hire a bike in one of the towns. Choose the slower pace of the Fife Coastal Route and take time to discover even more on your travels touristroutes In September 2017, Britain s tallest bridge, the new Queensferry Crossing opened over the Firth of Forth linking Fife to Edinburgh.
