2 Welcome to Padre Aviles. We sincerely hope that you will have a very enjoyable stay. Here is a little guide to help you, with varied information which we hope you will find useful. Supermarkets Here is a list of local Supermarkets. Please note that you will need a photo I.D. if you are using a credit card, even if you have a chip and pin. EL CANDADO A NEW MERCADONA HAS OPENED Very easy to find. Turn left out of the drive and follow the road for 7 km until you get to a roundabout. Go straight across and take the 3 rd street on the right. This is the 1 st road as you go over the dry river bed. It is indicated Mercadona. Follow the road about 200 meters and you will see the Mercadona on your left. This is a very good supermarket, not as big as Carrefour but stocks fresh milk. Open: Monday-Saturday 9.15 am 9.15 p.m SUPERSOL You will find a supermarket called Supersol at the bottom of the Olias road. Turn left out of the drive and follow the road for 7 km until you get to a roundabout. Take the second exit through an archway and immediate right. Follow the road down, take a right at the small roundabout and before reaching the main road, you will find the supermarket on your left. Opening times 9.00am - 9 pm- Monday to Saturday inclusive EL PALO MERCADONA Turn left out of the gate and go to the bottom of the hill (7 km) straight over the mini roundabout until you get to the main crossroad and traffic lights. (You will have a Michelin garage on your right and a Pharmacy opposite). Turn right and follow the road for about 2 km. You will see MERCADONA on you right. Drive past the supermarket, and turn right before the dry riverbed. 1st right again and you will see the parking on your right. This is an underground car park. Collect your ticket at the entrance and it is redeemable against your shop. You get 2 hours free parking if you spend over 18 Euros. Opening times 9.15am pm- Monday to Saturday inclusive 2

3 THE MARKET There is a very good covered market in El Palo, with a good selection of fresh fruit and veg, as well as fresh fish, meat and bread. The only day that you will not be able to buy fresh fish is on a Monday as the fishermen don t go fishing on a Sunday. The easiest way to find it, is to go to the bottom of the hill as if going to Carrefour, and when you get to the traffic lights turn RIGHT and go through El Palo, where you will find banks etc. You will see the Parking sign on the right hand side and the entrance to the underground parking on the LEFT right before the Yellow Correos (post office). The market is the big brown glass building on your left. Opening time: 8 am 2 pm Monday to Saturday inclusive LA CALA CARREFOUR Carrefour about 20 minutes away. It really has the best selection as well as clothes etc. Turn left out of the drive, and keep going for about 7.5 km down the hill, past the turning to the motorway, straight across the roundabout until you reach the main road and traffic lights. Turn left and 1 st right before the bridge. Go to the end of the road. Turn left at the traffic lights along the sea front. Stay on that road for about 5 km, go past exit 2 and you will see the big Carrefour sign on your left. Take the next exit La Cala del Moral/Centro commercial exit, and follow the road over the bridge and down towards the shopping centre. To come back: Coming up the road from Carrefour, turn immediately right at the round about, go past the cement factory and take exit 4- El Palo/Malaga exit. Follow the road round past the harbour and when you get to the first intersection (Michelin garage on right, Pharmacy on left) turn right and you are back on the Olias road. Opening times are am 10 pm Monday to Saturday inclusive. Sundays are open in July and August 3

4 EATING OUT Most restaurants start serving lunch about 1 pm and finish around 4 Dinner is from 8 pm onwards. There are many places to choose from, and eating out is very reasonable. You will find a variety of restaurants along the sea front, at the bottom of the hill. Head as if going to Carrefour and once you have turned left on the sea front road, carry on about 1km and you will see a place to park on your right. One restaurant that is very popular is El Tintero which you will see on your left as you enter the parking area. This is not the place to go if you are looking for a quiet tête à tête. But a novel experience as the waiters walk around with the plates, shouting what they have and you just put your hand up when you see something that takes your fancy! All the dishes have a fixed price, After your meal they look at them when you have finished and will write the total on the paper table cloth made!!! I would suggest you aim to be there for pm in the summer months as it will be very hard to get a table otherwise. {It also is quieter at that time!} If you wish to know what to eat don t hesitate to ask me. If you walk along the sea front you will see many more restaurants, and an ice cream parlor, full of homemade ice cream, always a huge success with the children!!!! You can drive either direction or whenever on the sea front you will always find restaurants. Another place where they have nice bars and coffee bars is in Pedregalejo. Go past the market and carry on another 1 km. Once you have gone over the dry river bed take the 4 th road on the left and park anywhere you can and walk down to the seafront. If you turn right and walk about 200 meters and you will find another nice restaurant called Miguelito el Cariñoso, next to a big anchor. There is also Namaste and a very nice pizzeria/creperie behind.(tell the owners Frank and Francoise that you are staying with us and they will look after you) A little further on are lots more cafes, bars and restaurants. Just sitting down and watching the world go by, is so relaxing. If you wish to go to a smarter restaurant, there is a nice one in El Palo called El Cobertizo and he also does nice tapas. The centre of Malaga offers lovely tapa bars. Amongst the many, some of my favorites are El Trillos which is on the main shopping street called calle Larios, Gorkis, La Barra, El Citron on Plaza de la Merced, El Pimpi also close to the Plaza de la Merced and next door to the Picasso Museum. 4

5 PLACES TO VISIT MALAGA CENTRE The Tourist board has lots of info as well as maps etc. They are located everywhere but there is a very useful one on the Plaza de la Marina opposite Calle Larios Malaga is a lovely city to walk around, with interesting sightseeing, or you may just want to stroll around the small streets and lovely shops, or just sit down in one of the many cafes. They are many day outings you can enjoy around Malaga. Firstly the Alcazaba which was built by moors on Roman foundations; it was a residence for governors of the city. The Cathedral, built on the ruins of a mosque, this renaissance-style building dates back to the 16 th Century and is nicknamed La Maquita {the cripple} because its second tower was never finished. Impressive choir stalls, with 40 statues of saints executed by Pedro de Mena, Polychrome sculpture of the catholic Monarchs. The Gibralfaro Castle connected by walls to the Alcazaba, this fortress is of Phoenician origin but was rebuilt in the 14 th Century by Yusuf I. It stands 426 feet above sea- level and offers beautiful views over the Mediterranean and Malaga. Others places of interest are- Museo de Bella Artes, the Picasso Museum and the Museo de Artes populares. Los Montes de Malaga {Malaga s national Park} is only 7 km from Padre Aviles. Until a century ago renowned for their vineyards, Malaga wine, sweet and potent, was internationally popular. But the dreaded phylloxera, a small bug, killed off and delivered a blow to the Malaga wine industry from which has never really recovered. To get to Malaga turn left out of the drive and go all the way down the hill, straight across the roundabout until you reach the main road. Turn right at the main traffic lights and carry on that road for about 5 km. Keeping to the left as the road forks just past the petrol station. There are a number of car parks. The Marina and Alcazaba car parks are the most convenient ones, but he marina car park tends to get very busy. NERJA About ½ hour away heading east. Nerja is a nice town to walk around. The wonderful Caves are spectacular and well worth a visit. 5

6 FRIGILIANA Frigiliana is a very pretty white washed village only 4 miles from the coast, but 900 ft above sea-level. With its cubist architecture and mosaic-cobbled streets, it won Spain s national and Andalucia s regional prize for the best preserved and beautiful village. Park your car by the bus stop and walk up into the old sector of town. If you climb up the stepped streets of the Barrio Alto and take a path that curves round the hillside, you reach the site of a Moorish fort which commands magnificent views of the sea and mountains. FUENGIROLA There is a wonderful zoo to visit, for more information you can call Open everyday from 10 a.m. Really nice for young children as it is small, very well maintained and you can see the animals from close up. BENALMADENA Selwo Marina. Another great hit with the children. A marine park, where they have dolphin shows, and lots of other wildlife. Open daily from 10 am More Information : MARBELLA The Old town of Marbella is very nice to walk around. The orange square is full of nice restaurants, and if you like boats, then go and catch a glimpse of the big yachts in Puerto Banus. There are many more places to visit, such as the Alhambra in Granada. Granada is 126 km away and it takes about 1 hour to get there. If you wish to go to the mountains the Sierra Nevada is another ½ hour up the mountain from Granada. Cordoba is 176 km from Malaga, Seville 207 km. and Ronda 122 km. Most towns are very accessible now and quick to get to because of the new motorways. There are many beautiful beaches especially towards Tarifa and Cadiz. THE BOTANICAL GARDENS Definitely worth a visit and the children will love running around the lush paths between the fantastic variety of trees and plants. To get there get on the motorway at the bottom of the hill towards the airport. As you are exiting the second tunnel turn right towards Granada. Then take the 1 st exit. Follow the sign posts toward the Jardines ( Botanico) de la Conception and it will lead you right to the entrance. (It is on the opposite side of the motorway). To come back once you are on the motorway make sure you turn right towards Motril otherwise you will end up in the centre of Malaga. 6

7 CHILDREN ACTIVITIES They are many things to do with young children. As well as just relaxing and enjoying the surrounds of Padre Aviles, you can head down to the beach which will only take you ten minutes. Nerja also offers a variety of different beaches. There is also the Aqualand. A fun day out for the children with lots of water slides and a large swimming pool. There is also a small area for younger children to play in. Tivoli, is a big fun fair, open from March to October. They have weekly shows and many rides for children and adults. BEACHES Lots of nice beaches everywhere. El Palo, Pedregalejo, la Cala (exit 2 on the way to Carrefour), Rincon de la Victoria (past Carrefour and carry on on the motorway until you see the Rincon de la Victoria sign. Most beached have pedalos for rent. The beaches in Nerja are also nice. Burriana beach is a very busy and popular beach in the summer with lots of tourists. You can find most water sports there. If you wanted somewhere quieter, and more adventurous you can to Maro which is also near Neja and should be marked on a road map. You may see some nudists on this beach. You can also head further afield to Almuñecar. Another really fun and beautiful place is El Chorro on the way to Cartama. About one hours drive but really worth it. It is a beautiful lake where they hire Pedalos and canoes. There is a nice restaurant overlooking the lake called El Mirador. DOCTORS If you should wish to go to the doctors/ pediatrician, you will need your E111 form. To get to the surgery, turn left out of the drive. Follow the road all the way to the traffic lights. Turn left and 1 st right before the bridge. Take the 2 nd road on the right, and you will find the surgery at the end of the street on your left hand side next to the Police staion. Park anywhere you can, and walk around the building, to the entrance. If you want to see a doctor the same day, you need to get to the clinic by 13.15, get a ticket and wait in the queue. There is also a Doctor in Olias but not a pediatrician. The surgery is open Mondays/Wednesdays/ Fridays hrs Tuesdays + Thursdays hrs For any additional information please do not hesitate to ask. We do have various leaflets in the office. 7

8 Around Padre Aviles We would appreciate it, if you would take 5 minutes to read the following information. WATER As you all know it is becoming a problem in Spain because of the lack of rain. We are on well water and therefore do not have endless supplies. So we would appreciate your careful use of this precious commodity. The water is drinkable but has a lot of limescale, and therefore if to be drunk in large amount, we would suggest that you drink bottled water. DRAINS We are not on mains drains, so please use the dustbins provided and don t throw anything down the toilet except toilet paper. BBQ As you can see a BBQ has been provided. Please make sure that the lids are on after use as just a little wind can be dangerous especially in the summer months when the land is so dry. When eating outside please make sure that no food is left lying around as ants, and wasps seem to sense the food from far away!!!! Could you please make sure that you take your umbrella down when not in use as we do get unexpected gust of wind which takes them soaring up in the air. SMOKING No smoking in the apartment please and if smoking outside PLEASE make sure that your cigarette is completely out before disposing of it in the ashtrays provided. DUSTBINS There is no bin collection to individual properties here in Malaga. There are communal containers on the main road for everyone s use and they are collect daily except for Sundays. Please take your bins with you on your way down. You will also notice the recycling bins. They are blue for paper and cardboard, green for bottles and glass and the yellow container is for everything else except organic waste. 8

9 SWIMMING POOL AREA Please would you be kind enough to collect your things at the end of the day as, although the dogs are not allowed by the pool. Please make sure you use beach towels on the deck chairs as it is more hygienic for the next guests. FREE WIRELESS ACCESS Please note that we have free wireless access by the main house and in the converted stables. The password is padreaviles by the main house and the network is Flexnet in the converted stables with as the passcode. If you have any trouble don t hesitate to ask. DVD collection We are happy to loan DVDs, but do ask you to look after them and not to let young children handle them. We ask for a small contribution when borrowing them so we can replace them if they get scratched and carry on adding to the collection. DOGS Our dogs, Linda, Tilly, Henry and Lola are very friendly. They are not allowed by the pool or in the apartments, so would you be kind enough to keep the various gates closed at all times as well as for the safety of young children. Please do not feed them and if they bother you, just let us know and we will make sure they stay with us in the main house. YOUNG CHILDREN Please feel free to use all the toys on the terrace as well as the climbing frame. We do ask you to keep a vigilant eye on your children when in and by the pool. Accidents can happen so fast. As previously mentioned no children are allowed to be in the swimming pool area without the supervision of an adult. If you wish to go out one night, we will happily organize a babysitter. Thank you for taking the time to read this. We hope you will have a fantastic holiday.
