2 YOUR ARRIVAL Transfer to Lake Maggiore Generally, the transfer from Milan Malpensa airport to Lake Maggiore takes around 1 hr and 15 minutes. Sometimes you may have to wait for a short while at the airport for additional flights to land. Please be aware there may not always be a Holiday Rep accompanying you on your transfer. Just so you know, sometimes our transfer vehicles can t make it right to the door of your accommodation, so there might be a short walk or, you may have to possibly carry your luggage to get to the entrance of your accommodation. If you've booked car hire prior to your departure please contact a Thomson Holiday Rep at the airport - they'll be able to direct you to the car hire office. If this is something you have arranged independently, that we may not be aware of, please let us know so that we are not expecting or waiting for you on the transfer. If you re arriving into resort by car or train, you ll find an Information Pack waiting for you at your accommodation reception. This is full of helpful information and will also tell you where and when your Thomson Holiday Rep will be arranging to meet you. Check in and Local Tourist Tax When checking-in to your hotel you will need to present your passports to the reception staff, these will then be returned to you after a short while. If you haven't had them returned to you, just ask the reception staff. In Italy a tourist tax is chargeable per person-per night. It is set by the local council and based on the official star rating of the hotel. This is generally around 1-2 per person-per night and will be charged at the end of your stay. Many hotels only accept this payment in cash, so make sure you check with your reception on check-in. If you have any specific dietary requirements, make sure you inform your reception when checking in. They may ask you to introduce yourself to the dining room staff at your first meal so that they know who you are as well. You can also inform us in advance by using the contact details in this info pack before you come on holiday, and we will pass it on to your hotel before you arrive. Please report any issues or specific requests you have to your hotel reception. If anything remains unresolved, please contact us and we will be happy to help where we can. Safety standards regarding balconies may be different to the UK. You may have a room where the balcony is lower than what you would expect. Please take care when on the balcony,

3 and do not lean on or over the railings. Children under 12 years old should be supervised and not be left unattended on the balcony at any time. Welcome Meeting We will hold a short Welcome Meeting at the beginning of your holiday to give you lots of information about what there is to see and do during your stay. You will find details regarding the time and place of your Welcome Meeting written on the back of your Information Pack envelope. This will be given to you at the airport or you will receive it on arrival, when you check in. Whether it's your first time on the lake or if you have travelled with us before, the Welcome Meeting is the best place to get all the latest information and a ferry timetable. For further information, timetables and fares you can go to We will have a copy of the ferry timetable available for you and we'll give you some suggestions of places to visit during your stay. The fast services (Servizio Rapido) offer a more exhilarating ride around the lake, but do carry a surcharge on top of the normal ticket price. These services are printed in red on the timetable. The timetable itself can be difficult to read as it is quite large, but come and see us for more info and to help understand the timetable or plan your journey. Trains There are train services in many of the towns and villages around the lake. You will find railway stations in Baveno, Meina and Stresa. Bars & Restaurants Restaurants

25 Restaurants Mamma Mia, Stresa - Rep Favourite The service always comes with a smile to make you feel welcome in this family-run restaurant. The freshest produce goes to make their pizzas, pastas, fish and meat dishes, all very reasonably priced. Located on the Via Principe Tomaso, look out for the beige awning. Taverna del Pappagallo, Stresa A cornerstone of the Stresa restaurant scene and our favourite pizzeria, Taverna del Pappagallo has been serving visitors for over 60 years. Their selection of homemade desserts is not to be missed. Located on the Via Principessa Margherita, just past Riva Est Gelato. Cafe Torino, Stresa Serving food in Stresa since 1904, this restaurant is perfectly placed in the centre of Stresa. It has a large outdoor seating area, and a good selection of pizzas, pastas, meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. Located in the Piazza Cardona, look out for the blue sign. Ristorante Posta, Baveno With a wide selection of regional dishes and friendly service, Ristorante Posta is great place to mix it with the locals. Be sure to pop in and make a reservation though as it can get extremely busy. Located in the main square of Baveno, opposite the ferry port. Sopra-Sotto, Baveno Situated between the hotel Simplon and Dino, this Wine Bar and Restaurant has a huge selection of wines, and a delicious menu. Not only that but you can enjoy al-fresco dining in their tranquil garden. Located on the main street in Baveno, about 60m from the Hotel Simplon Cava Restaurant Situated with a terrace on the lakefront and the main restaurant on the Corso Garibaldi in Baveno, this friendly restaurant boasts home-cooked favourites and wonderful cocktails to enjoy whilst relaxing on the sunshine. Located on the main road in Baveno, next door to the hotel Beau Rivage Cafés and Bars Paulon Caffe, Stresa New to this year to Stresa, this convenient café is set back off the main road opposite the main

26 ferry terminal. The fresh salads and sandwiches are well priced. Angolo de Gelato, Stresa Situated right in the centre of the main piazza in Stresa, choose from over 30 flavours including Disarrono, pear, Parma violet and forest fruits and many more. Located in the Piazza Cardona, as well as in Baveno. El Gato Negro, Stresa In the back streets of Stresa, El Gato Negro may seem small at first, but go through to the other side to discover a courtyard beer garden complete with televisions for showing local sports and music. Located on the Via Principessa Margherita, look out for the yellow sign. Café l'incontro, Baveno In an excellent location next to the ferry port in Baveno, stop off for some lunch or a typical espresso and brioche like the Italians. With great staff and ozone-friendly beers this is a great place to while away the hours in the sunshine. Located in the Piazza IV Novembre, near to the ferry terminal Miralago, Baveno This stylish lounge bar sits on the main road in Baveno and has a terrace overlooking the lake. A great place to enjoy one of the many cocktails on offer. Popular with the young locals and always bustling throughout the night until the early hours. Located on the main road, near to the Hotel Beau Rivage. Out and about The tap water in your hotel is perfectly drinkable, although you may notice a difference compared to your water at home. Cheap bottled water is widely available in the local supermarkets Many of the supermarkets have fresh fruit available, but often they will select the produce for you When looking for places to eat, don't forget that there can be a cover charge (coperto), or a service charge (servizio) added to your bill. These will always be displayed on the menu outside the restaurant so you can check it out before you go in Restaurants on the lake-front can often be more aimed at tourists, and more expensive - head into the back-streets of the towns for some more local eateries Your Holiday Rep will give you tried and tested suggestions of places to eat around the area, so go and see them for some great local suggestions Local specialities such as Mussiltini (a lake fish often served with pasta), Persico (perch often served with rice) and other lake fish can be found in many of the restaurants of the area, and are a delicious treat after a day exploring the area Try the local meats and cheeses such as Bresaola, salami piccante (spicy salami) and the Toma cheese in many of the shops around Lake Maggiore Italian Customs
