1 CRCEES SUMMER SCHOOL 7-20 JULY, 2008 ASPECTS OF IDENTITY & CULTURE GENERAL INFORMATION Accommodation During the Summer school, we will be staying in two small hotels in Petersburg city centre about 10 minutes walk from each other, and 5 minutes walk from the Centre for Independent Social Research, 87 Ligovskii Prospekt, where the summer school will take place. All students will be staying in the Hotel Idillia, 18 Kuznetchnyi Pereulok You will be accommodated in twin rooms and these have been organised as far as possible to pair you so that each room should have a Russian speaker. All tutors will be staying at the Rinaldi Hotel, 105, Nevskii Prospekt Tel (812) , ry_id=18&itemid=26&vmcchk=1

At immigration your passport and visa will be checked and stamped and you will need to present an immigration form. The form is made up of two identical sections, Arrival and Departure and both must be completed on arrival. You will almost certainly be given these forms on the plane and can complete them before you land. If you are not given them on the plane, don t panic there are plenty available in the arrivals hall where you will have to queue for passport control anyway. The immigration card (or landing card) requires basic information. It may be that the form is only available in Russian however you can write your answers in English. (see below for a translation of the form print this out and take it with you so that you can complete the form without difficulty) Most of the form is self explanatory. Where it asks for the reason of your stay please underline business Служебный визит NOT study Учеба When you get to the passport control, hand in the completed form along with your passport. The immigration officer will tear off and keep the arrival section and the departure section will be stamped and returned along with your passport - keep it safe. The back of this departure form will be used for your Russian visa registration stamps (see below). After immigration you will collect your luggage and then pass through customs. You do not need to fill out a customs declaration form unless you have more than $3000 in foreign currency or more than 75,000 roubles with you (which of course you will not!!). Follow the green nothing to declare signs and exit through the green corridor.

As the majority of students are arriving on the BA flight from London someone will be waiting in arrivals (with a sign CRCEES SUMMER SCHOOL) to direct you to the minibus. For those arriving earlier in the day you are of course welcome to wait for this minibus. More information concerning this will be ed shortly once we have received confirmation from the St Petersburg team. Two additional options are possible: a. Book a taxi transfer this is expensive and costs approximately 80 for 2 persons. If you are interested in this option we can provide more details. b. Alternatively for those familiar with Russia the following provides instructions of how to get to the hotel by public transport:

4 You will arrive at Pulkovo airport, terminal 2. The journey to the hotel involves a bus and an underground trip. 1) First take a shuttlebus (these are small minibuses / marshrutka / маршрутка) to the underground station Moskovskaya «Московская». There are three shuttle buses which will take you to Moskovskaya metro station #3, #13, #113. They stop at the first bus-stop near the exit from the arrivals hall. Shuttle bus #13 goes along Pulkovo highway from the airport to «Moskovskaya» metro station (i.e. this is the final stop), the price is 20 roubles. Shuttle bus #3 goes to the city centre via «Moskovskaya» metro station. Tell the driver that you want to get off at Moskovskaya metro, the price is 20 roubles. Shuttle bus #113 goes to «Kupchino» via «Moskovskaya» metro station. Tell the driver that you want to get off at Moskovskaya metro, the price is 22 roubles. Shuttle buses start when all the seats are occupied. Passengers buy the ticket from the driver in the shuttle-bus 2) At Moskovskaya metro go into the underground and take the train to Nevskii prospekt «Невский проспект» (7 stops) at Nevskii Prospekt walk through within the underground system to the metro station Gostinyi dvor «Гостиный двор» (this is effectively within the same station, you have simply changed lines from the blue to the green line). Take the train one stop to Mayakovskaya «Маяковская» station When you first enter the metro at Moskovskaya you will need to buy two coupons each, one for you and one for your luggage. They cost 17 roubles each. Ask for dva zhetona (2 жетонa). Go through the barriers by the special wide turnstile which is next to where the station guard sits. She will help you get through if necessary. 3) The hotel is an easy 15 minute walk from Mayakovskaya metro station. Come out of the metro station you will be on Nevsky Prospekt. With the metro behind you, turn to your right and walk along Nevsky Prospekt. Almost immediately you will come to a set of traffic lights with a pedestrian crossing. You should cross the road and carry on in the same direction you were walking before. At the next small crossroads turn right onto Ulitsa Pushkinskaya ул.пушкинская. Walk down this street until you come to the first cross roads which has a statue and a small gardens in the middle. Cross over and continue along Ulitsa Pushkinskaya. The next cross roads is Kuznechnyi pereulok Кузнечный пер. Turn left onto this street and almost immediately you will see no. 18, with a small sign saying Hotel Idillia Гостиница «Идиллия». Press the buzzer and you will be let in to reception. Travel from the railway station to the hotel If arriving from Moscow you will arrive at Moskovskii Vokzal which is about minutes walk from the hotel. You come out of the station onto Ploshchad Vosstaniya. Stand with your back to the station and you will be facing Ligovskii prospekt (Nevskii Prospekt will be on your right). Cross over Ligovskii Prospekt turn left and walk back down Ligovskii prospekt. Kuznechnyi pereulok is the second street on the right. Turn right into Kuznechnyi pereulok, no. 18 is before the first cross roads. You will see a

5 small sign saying Гостиница «Идиллия» Hotel Idillia, You need to ring the buzzer and you will be let in. Check-in/Visa Registration When you arrive at the hotel you should check-in at reception. Check in is from If you arrive earlier, you can leave your bags at the hotel and go into the city, but you will need to come back and check-in after 12 When you check-in, the hotel will register your visa for you. This will mean that you have to leave your passport at the reception for a short while it should only take about 15 minutes. Your registration will be stamped onto the back of your immigration card which you will have filled in on entering the country (see above) When in Russia you should carry your passport and immigration card with you at all times as police may ask to see it. Meals Throughout the fortnight you will have breakfast in the hotel. Lunch and dinner will be in a café near the Summer school and have been paid for by the summer school except during the Excursion phase and group work phase of the school (13-17 July) when you will need to buy your own lunch. There are plenty of small cafes, kiosks and fastfood outlets in Petersburg where you will be able to eat quite cheaply. You should therefore budget for this. 1 st Evening The programme of the summerschool will not start officially until the morning of 7 th July, however for those who would like to meet on the first evening, we will gather in the foyer of the Idillia hotel at 8pm to go for a short walk and a drink somewhere nearby. Summer School Venue The summer school will take place in the offices of the Centre for Independent Social Research 87 Ligovskii Prospekt. A very short walk from Hotel Idillia. On leaving the hotel turn left ont Kuznechnyi pereulok. At the next corner turn right onto Ligovskii Prospekt. The Centre for Independent Social Research (CISR) is one block down on your right. On the first morning you will need to show your passport to the security guard at the entrance and go to the Conference room, opposite the CISR offices, room 301 on the third floor. However, for all those who prefer to go to the CISR together on the first morning (7 th July), we will meet at in the Lobby of hotel Idillia.

Excursions Two excursions have been organised as part of the Summer school a boat trip and visit to the water museum on 13 th July and a bus tour on 14 th July.

The cost of both of these will be covered by the Summer school budget. There will also be free time on the afternoon of 14 th July when you may wish to visit other parts of Petersburg or even get out of town and go to the suburbs What to bring Please print out and bring with you copies of the: (i) timetable, (ii) programme, (iii) reading materials, (iv) participants list, (v) tutor biographies. These will all be available from the CRCEES website shortly and are also attached with this . If you have problems with any attachments and are unable to download documents from the website please let us know. You should also bring: Notebooks and pens Comfortable footwear as we will do quite a lot of walking in the city Clothes for warm weather, but also rainwear and warmer clothes for the evenings Camera Dictaphone if you have one Money you should not need to bring large amounts of cash with you.

7 If you have a British bank card with either CIRRUS or VISA on it you will be able to withdraw cash at ATMs all around the city It is not usually possible to buy roubles in the UK, so take some money with you to change when you first arrive. Do NOT take Scottish pound notes as these will not be accepted either ask your bank for English notes, or buy Euros to take with you these can be changed at Petersburg s many exchange kiosks.
