2 Grant Park Urbs in Horto is Chicago s motto, City in a Garden. Although that may be hard to see in the face of so much new urban development, Chicago has a remarkable park system with more than,000 acres of downtown public green space. Grant Park is Chicago s largest and most well-used space. Its 220 acres were designed according to architect Daniel Burnham s 19 plan for Chicago and were inspired by the gardens at Versailles. Its grassy lawns host legions of picnickers, sunbathers, and the occasional protest or celebration, including President Barack Obama s 2008 Acceptance Speech, concerts such as the annual Lollapalooza Festival, and annual City festivals including Chicago Blues Fest and the Taste of Chicago. Buckingham Fountain is the park s centerpiece and one of Chicago s most well-loved icons. At 1.5 million gallons with 150-tall jets, it is twice as large as its inspiration, Versailles Latona Fountain. From April through October it shoots every hour on the hour.
