3 CHART 1 Gross consumption of natural gas by OECD region Billion cubic meters OECD Asia Oceania OECD Europe OECD Americas 0 Dec-14 Apr-15 Aug-15 Dec-15 Apr-16 Aug-16 Dec-16 Apr-17 Aug-17 Dec-17 Total OECD indigenous production of natural gas grew by 7.8% in December 2017 compared to December High production levels in OECD Asia Oceania (+24% y-o-y 1 ) drove this increase, specifically in Australia (+27.9% y-o-y) due to the Wheatstone LNG project starting production in October While indigenous production in the OECD Americas also increased (+9.0% y-o-y), OECD Europe experienced a decrease of 3.4% on a year-on-year basis, driven by falls in the UK (-18.2%) and the Netherlands (-8.0%). Overall, total OECD production in 2017 grew compared to 2016 by 2.4%. Total OECD imports (entries) 2 of natural gas increased by 3.1% in December 2017 compared to December This growth was mainly driven by OECD Europe and OECD Asia Oceania, where natural gas imports increased by 6.0% and 4.8% year-on-year, respectively. In particular, the Netherlands, the UK, and Japan saw growth rates of 37.4%, 16.8% and 5.4%, respectively, in December 2017 compared to December Overall, total OECD imports increased by 5.1% on an annual basis. Total OECD exports (exits) 2 of natural gas also increased in December 2017 compared to December 2016 (+6.9% y-o-y). There were growth across all OECD areas, led in absolute terms by OECD Europe (+5.0%), followed by the OECD Americas (+8.0%), and OECD Asia Oceania (+18.8%) on a year-on-year basis. In the OECD Americas, US LNG exports reached record high levels as new facilities came online, and 2017 saw the first imports of US LNG into Northwest Europe. Overall, total OECD exports increased by 8.8% on an annual basis. Total OECD gross consumption of natural gas grew in December 2017 (+5.9% y-o-y) compared to December Strong growth occurred in the OECD Americas (+7.9% y-o-y) and OECD Asia Oceania (+17.8% y-o-y) but OECD Europe fell by 0.8% y-o-y. On an annual basis, total OECD gross consumption of natural gas grew by 1.0%. 1. Year-on-year (y-o-y) change over corresponding month of previous year. 2. Transit volumes are included. Trade amounts include intra-regional trade. OECD/IEA, International Energy Agency

5 NOTES Please note that all IEA data are subject to the following Terms and Conditions found on the IEA s website: 1) ESTIMATED DATA Due to the absence of official data, the following data have been estimated: Israel January 2010 to December ) COUNTRY NOTES A General Note Starting with January 2011 data, the Imports and Exports no longer represent ultimate origins and destinations but are replaced by Entries and Exits corresponding the amounts that physically crossed the national boundaries of the country. These series are subject to revisions within the following months. Australia Austria Belgium Canada The breakdown of export destinations is estimated by the IEA on the basis of OECD imports of natural gas from Australia. Most recent data are the best estimates from the Austrian national administration, based on available preliminary data. Data are usually finalised within three months following the first publication. Most recent data on origins of imports and final destinations of exports of LNG are the best estimates from the Belgian Administration based on available preliminary data. Data for Canada are submitted by the Department of Natural Resources (Natural Resources Canada, or NRCan), based on actual and preliminary data from Canada's national statistical agency (Statistics Canada) and various other sources. In cases where data from these sources are unavailable, estimates are conducted by NRCan, based on information available at the time, including alternative sources. Data are usually finalised within three months of the first publication. An important source for any differences between data published by Statistics Canada and data published by the IEA is data estimated by NRCan or the IEA Secretariat. Iceland Ireland There is no natural gas data for Iceland, as there is neither production nor consumption. As of April 2017 there is no gas stored in Ireland. Stock figures for April-May 2017 refer to line pack gas. Israel Korea Mexico United Kingdom The statistical data for Israel are supplied by and under the responsibility of the relevant Israeli authorities. The use of such data by the OECD is without prejudice to the status of the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem and Israeli settlements in the West Bank under the terms of international law. Information is based on data published by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources as well as the Central Bureau of Statistics. Following a change in reporting methodology, starting from January 2015 gross inland deliveries (observed) of Observed gross inland deliveries of natural gas from January 2013 onwards are estimated. Revisions are pending. Beginning with January 2016, exits to the Isle of Man are reported under Non-Specified/Other. Prior to this date, exits to the Isle of Man were included in exits to Ireland. OECD/IEA, International Energy Agency
