How the conference and training were run Lectures and paper presentations were organized in a sequence that fit in the training need. In the first lecture Introduction to Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) Susan drew a picture of the current status and future direction in SWAT watershed modeling and introduced to trainees the SWAT theory and concepts. Dr Loi walked the trainees through the installation of Mapwindow GIS, MWSWAT. The hand-on training was led by Dr Loi step by step. After each trainee had a successful run of the SWAT model, Susan gave the lecture SWAT calibration techniques, which covers the common problems, key considerations, a few examples, and available calibration tools. The SWAT_check and SWAT_files_editor tools were also introduced and trainees had hand-on experience to check their modeling results and edit their input files. The ArcAPEX and ArcSWAT interfaces, which facilitate the coupled APEX-SWAT modeling system, DEM based versus User defined subarea delineation were also introduced to trainees. Each trainee was provided with a set of handout and a copy of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT): Global Applications (2009) book. When the lecturers gave lessons, ten facilitators walked around tables to help and answer questions for all the trainees. There were altogether 71 trainees.
Facilitators at work! This is an essential point for the conference where trainees are assisted by academics & professionals who know the subject relatively well.
Concept of Facilitators At any training in development projects teaching is normally done by facilitators who lecture the subjects of interest and there might be one or more persons who stay around and help explain things that trainees may not understand well enough. For SWAT, it is somewhat different: a lesson may be given by someone (lecturer) who knows SWAT, which is a difficult and complicated subject and the person may not speak the local language, which will increase the obstacle - making the teaching often less successful, particularly in non-english speaking countries. Therefore, for SWAT training, it is beneficial to have a number of experienced persons go around and help trainees to solve their problems during various phases of operation. It is important that NO SINGLE TRAINEE to such a SWAT training course should go home emptyhanded. The number of facilitators may vary depending on several factors. Depending on situation, the organizers may even ask some experienced participants that have been familiar with SWAT to certain extent to do the facilitator s task. Additional benefit in providing facilitators is that, in the process there will be certain interaction between (mostly foreign) facilitators and (mostly local) trainees, which will bring forth a good contact and cooperation in the future. SWAT Training this time is the first time that facilitators are provided; though organizers are optimistic of the outcome, this strategy needs to be exercised and evaluated at more training venues.

Conclusions (as of August 21, 2011) 1. It is beneficial to have a number of facilitators (people who are familiar with SWAT to some extent) to help trainees, which may also give additional benefit in making good contact and cooperation in the future. 2. Since SWAT modeling technology concerns large numbers of complicated matters, having lecturers who know local language apart from English is a big advantage. 3. All participants were receptive in forming a SWAT Network of China and it is agreed that a social media network will be used and Dr Huang Feng fhuang@cau.edu.cn of China Agricultural University (CAU) in Beijing will be the network secretary and would run a website and all participants at this event become founding members automatically. The Network needs to find the chairman by choosing among eminent scientists. A brief regulation of the network may need to be written. 4. NETWORKS IN OTHER COUNTRIES: Thailand has had its SWAT Network since January this year. Participants from the Philippines (Prof Nathaniel Alibuyog) and Vietnam (Dr Nguyen Kim Loi & Ms Nguyen Thi Hong) have agreed on setting up their SWAT network in respective countries. 5. SWAT meetings in the future would benefit more if more countries were added to the existing ones, e.g. China, Korea and Japan, and rename the meeting from SWAT SEA (South East Asia) to SWAT SEEA (South East & East Asia). Chinese participants agreed to this proposal and could do it immediately. Dr Samran Sombatpanit volunteered to act as its provisional coordinator.
Other Issues - Prof Nguyen Kim Loi will produce the 2nd edition of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT): Global Applications (2009) book next year. - Due to the wide use of SWAT model in studying river basins WASWAC should cooperate with the SWAT Team in Texas by considering SWAT as an Associate Program. (SWAT Team in Texas agreed as proposed since August 15, 2011.) - When participants come to training with their own laptops it will have a good advantage in terms of software installation and they can continue after returning to their bases. The organizers only need to inform the participants the requirements for the hardware and software before they come. - Some authors of non-swat papers should also be invited, as there is a chance for them or their offices to start to learn about and use SWAT model in addition to what they have always been using, e.g. expensive licensed models. - Minor shortcomings: (1) A name badge should be provided to every participant, (2) there should be a proper introduction of all participants at the beginning, (3) A short appraisal form should be provided at the end of the training. - All SWAT participants are invited to attend the 2nd WASWAC World Conference to take place at Pattaya, Thailand during May 14-18, 2013, under the title Threats to land and water resources in the 21st century: Prevention, mitigation and restoration. SWAT SEA III and Conservation Agriculture (CA) SEA III are two major components, with the duration for the training for both on May 11-13, All participants are invited to join as members of the World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWAC), either as 5-year members for Life members. - There is a possibility to hold another SWAT Regional Conference and Training Workshop in China in All participants will be informed through the China SWAT Network.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION Anthony Green & Li Dingqiang on the boat plying Zhujiang, July 26, 2011 End of Part I Part I, 55 slides, finished Nov 20, 2011 Part II, 65 slides, finished Nov 29, 2011 Part II describes the visit to Sun Yatsen University and the postconference excursion to the northern part of Guangdong Province.
