2 Welcome Hello and welcome to our optional booklet for This year the booklet has a new format, introducing all of our classic entrances along with some new ones we think you would enjoy! We have created individual books for all of our regions, so if you are studying in England, Scotland, Vancouver, Toronto, San Diego or New York, you will find a much greater selection of entrances suggested to enhance your time with Oxford International. Introduction Optional excursions 2018 As well as new attractions, we have expanded those that are able to offer that little something extra for students, whether through workshops, private collections or alternative tours. Each page contains an overview of the destination, what the students will see and do, and what they get for their money. On most attractions they can benefit from our trade rate discounts! Please take the time to have a good read of this information and contact us with any questions. It is very helpful for us if you book these optional excursions ahead of your trip. However, it is of course possible for your group leaders to book them from their Activity Manager when they arrive at their centres. Please note that this list is by no means exhaustive. If there is somewhere not listed here that your groups really want to see, please contact us and we will gladly price the excursion for you. 3 Attractions Empire State Building Located in the centre of Midtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building is a 102-story skyscraper, when including the antenna spire reaches meters! As an American cultural icon with a distinctive Art Deco style, it has named by some as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World! Observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floors providing unforgettable 360 views of New York City and beyond! One World Observatory Ascend to the top of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere in less than 60 seconds using one of the building s five Sky Pod elevators, and look towards the horizon! Explore three levels filled with innovation and inspiration at One World Observatory, located in the top three floors of One World Trade Center. Cost Mon-Fri: $32.00 Cost Weekend: $34.00 Cost: $28.00 Statue Cruise & Ellis Island Top Of The Rock 70 floors into the sky takes you to the Top of the Rock, giving sweeping, unobstructed views of both Central Park and Manhattan s midtown and downtown skyscrapers. Cost: $30.00 (included in standard program) The world famous Statue of Liberty National Monument stands tall on Liberty Island in New York Harbor as an icon of freedom, and was a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad. Cruise on over to the Statue of Liberty, for some fantastic photo opportunities and scenic views. You will also get the opportunity to visit Ellis Island, which was the gateway for over 12 million immigrants to the United States, learn about its history before, during, and after its use as America s immigration station, and hear stories of why so many people immigrated to America and what became of them after they arrived. 4 Circle Line Cruises Liberty Cruise Be taken up close and personal to the Statue of Liberty on a cruise so that you can take your selfie with her from glorious angles that you can t get from dry land. You will also be given fascinating facts about her, and be shown many famous sights and landmarks along the harbor that you ll walk off the boat feeling like a native. Landmark Cruise This New York harbour cruise will help you tick off as many NYC bucket list items as possible, seeing the most famous NYC landmarks, along with magnificent views of midtown and lower Manhattan. Cost: $24.00 Cost: $22.00 Best of NY City Cruise The Beast Take a 70-foot custom-built speedboat ride at around 45 mph on a thrill ride down the Hudson, with lots of twists, turns, and splashes! Included in this stimulating journey will be panoramic views of midtown and lower Manhattan, and a visit within 100 feet of the Statue of Liberty. Cost: $23.00 As the only sightseeing cruise in New York City to completely circumnavigate the island of Manhattan, you can sit back, relax, and take in the sights! Guggenheim Museum This art museum in the neighborhood of Manhattan is the permanent home of a continuously expanding collection of impressionist, post-impressionist, early modern and contemporary art, featuring specialist exhibitions throughout the year. The collection is filled with prized pieces, including works from Picasso, Kandinsky, and Miró. The American Museum Of Natural History Spend the day exploring fascinating artefacts and lifelike exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History. Delve into the depths of the ocean, walk with the dinosaurs, and venture into outer space during your engaging visit. Dedicated to the conversation between the past and the present, the established and the experimental, MoMA aims to help you understand and enjoy the art of our time. COST: $14.00 COST: $12.00 The Metropolitan Museum 9/11 Memorial Honoring the lives of those who were lost in the 9/11 attacks, the Memorial occupies eight acres at the World Trade Center, and is a tribute to the past, but also a place of hope for the future. At the heart of the Memorial, bronze parapets displaying the names of all the men, women, and children bringing a feeling of quiet reverence to the space. Colloquially known as The Met, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the United States, with over 5,000 years of art from around the world. 6 Other Attractions NBC Studios Located in the historic 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan, you can enjoy behind-the-scenes access to NBC studios where hit shows such as Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon are made. With a guide showing you through the historic halls, you ll learn about the entire TV production process, from the writing and producing process, to the way the content gets to your home. Afterwards, you will get to experience everything first hand as you and your fellow tour guests produce your own show in the brand new Tour Studio. COST: $40.00 Coney Island - Luna park Coney Island was once the capital of amusement destinations in America, and carrying on with that tradition, Luna Park has taken on the mantle to draw visitors from New York City and tourists from around the world to its location, with a multitude of new attractions and exciting rides, including the refurbished historical Coney Island Cyclone! 8 Tours One Night in Washington D.C. Formally known as the District of Columbia, Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States, found on the Potomac River, bordering the states of Maryland and Virginia, host to a multitude of iconic buildings such as the Capitol, White House, and Supreme Court. Running out of activities will not be a problem in this compact city, as it is brimming with famous attractions, from the awe inspiring Lincoln Memorial, Basilia of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington Monument, and compelling war memorials, to the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Library of Congress, and National Portrait Gallery. Hotel accommodation, meals, and transport are included, with the rest of your time free to explore to your heart s content. COST: $ Full Day in Philadelphia The original capital of America, Philadelphia has a history enriched with culture, history and symbolism. Home to the Liberty Bell, and the Declaration of Independence which tributes the city s revolution. Philadelphia has contributed greatly to American history, when Benjamin Franklin begun the American Revolution and American Independence in the 18th century. On top of the Franklin Institute science & planetarium museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, popular attractions also include the Rocky Statue and the Rocky Steps - also known as the Art Museum Steps, made famous by its appearance in the triple-oscar-winning film Rocky. A run up those memorable steps and taking a photo at the top is a must for fans! COST: $ Two Nights in Niagara The town of Niagara plays neighbour to the famed Niagara Falls, a collective of three waterfalls that straddle the international border between Canada and the United States. To be able to fully appreciate the magnificent waterfalls, you can get get up close to hear the crashing waves, feel the mist on your face, and see the breathtaking view aboard the Maid of the Mist cruise. A visit to Toronto will be included where you will see its Old and New City Hall, one of the 5 great lakes of North America - Lake Ontario, and Ontario's Parliament building. As part of your two nights in Niagara will involve you crossing the border into Canada, please remember that appropriate visas will be required. COST: $ 8
