3 Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle, Washington, USA (Completed, 2007) Open public outdoor sculpture park (free admission) with fantastic views to Elliott Bay, Puget Sound and Mt Rainier and a waterfront trail for pedestrians and cyclists A former industrial site in the 1970s, it was developed as a main pedestrian path with a 1,600 m2 exhibition pavilion. The geometrical landscaped landform allows free movement between the city s urban centre and the restored beaches at the waterfront. It is built with a system of mechanically stabilized earth, capitalising on the 12m grade change from the top of the site to the water s edge. The play and water park restores native riparian buffer, reduces un-shaded pavement by 60%, increases native plant biodiversity 100%, utilizes regional materials and manufacturers to stimulate local economy, and captures an estimated 1million gallons of storm water annually to be reused as irrigation. It provides flood protection for up to a 200-year flood event. There are 22 land bridges constructed over the stream to improve mobility within and across this landscaped water corridor. SIZE: 5.6 km long, modern public recreation space in downtown Seoul COST: $367M VISITATION: has become popular among city residents and tourists The 5.5 km long elevated highway that once covered the stream has been demolished. To rejuvenate the nearly dried-up stream, about 120K tons of water from the Han River is pumped daily. Large sewers have been built alongside the river to provide additional retention for stormwater. SIZE: 1.6 km long COST: $153M VISITATION: 3.7 million annually (50% are New Yorkers / 50% American and foreign visitors) The steel rails, gravel ballast, soil and debris were removed to test the structural integrity of the concrete below. Once confirmed structurally sound, minor repairs and waterproofing were undertaken. Drainage system for the landscaping was installed. The retained/reinstated steel rails and railroad artefacts were sandblasted to remove the original lead paint.
