Guided canoe expeditions and small group eco-cruises are now widely available. Food lovers will find plenty to keep them satisfied. Famous for its citrus fruit, the Riverland produces a vast array of delights including almonds, stone fruit, avocados, capers and olive oil. Fresh produce can be purchased at roadside stalls, farmers markets and specialist retail outlets. Wine tasting is another popular activity in the Riverland, one of Australia s most important grape growing regions. There are now 25 wineries located from Renmark to Blanchetown several operate cellar doors. For a different taste sensation, why not try one of the local craft beers? With its ochre-coloured cliffs, water sports, delicious produce, proud pioneer history and vibrant arts scene, the Riverland offers something special for every type of traveller from romantic couples to energetic family groups. 16 WILDLIFE Renmark Blessed with extensive wetlands, several conservation parks and the Murray River itself, the Riverland is a great place to see some of our native species up close. The many landscapes of the Riverland create spectacular contrasts in scenery and are home to a diverse mix of plants and animals. The nature reserves throughout the region protect wildlife habitats and enable nature lovers to observe fauna at close range. Pooginook Conservation Park is an example of red sandy Mallee landscapes and bluebush plains. These landscapes, found north and south of the river corridor, are home to Red kangaroos, emus, the mighty Wedge-tailed eagles and the elusive Malleefowl. Many rare bird species can be seen in the old Mallee trees protected in Gluepot Reserve. Murtho Forest Reserve has examples of spectacular cliff formations, with swallows nesting under ledges, kingfishers burrowing into tunnels and Peregrine falcons perching on ledges to observe their prey. On the floodplain and wetlands at Loch Luna Game Reserve or Moorook Game Reserve, you may see ducks, swans, spoonbills, ibis and egrets. If you are very quiet you might see a native water rat, a giant goanna sunning itself on a tree or an echidna foraging for ants. Every spring the beautiful Rainbow Bee-eater returns from northern Australia to nest in the sandy soils along the river, heading north once more in autumn. In Brookfield Conservation Park you may see Regent parrots feeding in the Mallee landscapes before returning to their red gum hollows along the river. Bronzewing pigeons will barrel through the woodlands at dusk for an evening drink at the river and return in a similar hurry. It s easy to get off the beaten track and explore this relatively untouched environment, especially in the national parks and protected areas that include long stretches of river, wetlands and large areas of Mallee. Visit Bakara Conservation Park west of Loxton or Billiatt Wilderness Protection Area south of Loxton for superb examples of a Mallee landscape. 18 Murray River National Park Camping & FISHING The Murray River is a long-time favourite spot with anglers who come here for exciting fishing, plus some of the most tranquil camping spots in the whole of Australia. The Riverland boasts numerous peaceful campsites along its red gum-lined creeks and riverbanks that stretch for thousands of kilometres. Plan a quiet camping trip during the cooler months and enjoy the clean air, tranquillity, outdoor cooking and even try fishing for your next meal. Unwind at one of the many caravan parks along the river. For those who like to get a little closer to nature, camp in one of the national or conservation parks. Permits are available from selected Visitor Information Centres. Fishing is a popular pastime in the Riverland with several species that make a day s fishing both interesting and rewarding. The most popular angling and eating fish is Callop, also known as Golden perch or Yellowbelly. For sports anglers the legendary Murray Cod can grow to more than a metre and is a prized catch. During some months and in certain locations, the Murray Cod is a protected species, so call or visit before your trip. Native fish baits are popular and include shrimp and small yabbies caught in nets. Fishing tackle stores and many local general stores will carry a supply of fishing lures and worms, along with nets for fresh bait catching. For keen anglers and novices, or parents taking the kids on their first fishing trip, there is easy road access to most parts of the Murray River for bank fishing. All the major towns have boat ramps providing easy access for boat anglers to explore the river and creeks. Finding a secret spot is all part of the fishing journey. Try deep holes, sand bars, under logs, slight currents, below the locks and beneath willows for prime fish habitats at different times of the day and year. The famous Murray River yabby is typically abundant from October to April, especially after high winter and spring flows. It is a delicacy and great fun to catch. For information on campsites, maps and caravan parks near the river, visit the nearest Visitor Information Centre. Angler information Anglers should note that some species are protected, there are closed seasons and size and bag limits apply. If you re unsure of any regulations, send a free text message with the name of the fish to the SMSFish number: You ll receive an immediate response with the official size and bag and boat limit that applies to that species, as well as closed season information. Alternatively, phone or visit 16 rivertime.com.au camping and fishing

20 PS Industry, Renmark ITINERARY Our River PAST Named by explorer Captain Charles Sturt in 1830, the Murray River played a crucial role in the development of modern Australia. Pioneers from many countries helped create the modern waterway we know today, but for over 40,000 years the river has been central to the lives of the Aboriginal people living along its banks and in the region today. In 1887, Canadian engineers (and brothers) George and Ben Chaffey established Australia s first irrigation colony at Renmark. Encouraged by the success of Renmark s fruit and wine industries, other irrigation settlements soon sprang up, including Berri (1910), Loxton (1940s) and Blanchetown, the site of the Murray s first lock and weir system which opened in Paddle steamers were the major form of transport across inland Australia between 1860 and 1910, but these mighty vessels eventually gave way to rail and truck networks. At the same time, new crops and improved farming techniques have transformed these dry land areas into a highly productive region. To learn more about the region s pioneering history, visit one of the many small museums you ll find in towns and villages across the Riverland. You may even find your own piece of Riverland history at Cammies Antiques in Paringa Morgan Historic Wharf and Landseer Building. On your way from Adelaide, stop in at the Morgan Wharf and Landseer Building. Built in 1878, this was the business river port. The historic precinct captures the early days of river trading. 2. Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum. Head to the Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum and marvel at the displays, engines and pumps from a past era. The museum holds five major operating days each year, featuring the Humphrey Pump, a Steam Train Traction Engine, Stationary Engines, and the National Trust dioramas. 3. The Village, historic Loxton. Further upstream you will find The Village, historic Loxton and a treasure trove of memories, experiences and exhibits from a past era. Stroll down the village main street and experience a typical rural town with over 45 buildings, each telling a unique story of the struggles and fortunes of the pioneers who settled in the 'Outback'. 4. PS Industry. The PS Industry was built in 1911 as a workboat, and now resides in Renmark. During its working life the paddle steamer played a major role in keeping the river open for traffic by removing snags and later in the construction of locks and weirs. The PS Industry is open for inspection daily and steaming days are held on the first Sunday of every month. 5. Loveday Internment Camp. The largest internment camp in Australia was used to house Japanese, Chinese, German and Italian prisoners during World War II. The internees grew vegetables and poppies and cut wood, as well as other chores. The camp had education classes and even an orchestra. A new display is featured at the Barmera Visitor Information Centre. 6. Overland Corner Hotel. Situated along the Goyder Highway, 21 kilometres from Barmera, the Overland Corner Hotel is one of the most charming pubs in the Riverland, dating back to The Murray River flows just 600 feet from the hotel and sells a good range of locally brewed beers, ciders and South Australian wines. Barossa The Barossa is renowned for its food and wine, cultural experiences and easy-going lifestyle. Visitors will be able to sample wine at some of Australia s best-known wineries, such as Wolf Blass, Jacob s Creek and Penfolds, or meet winemakers at small, family-owned producers scattered across the Barossa s many sub-regions. Many wineries serve excellent modern cuisine at their cellar doors. Explore the number of important parks and reserves or the hiking and cycling tracks, including the Heysen Trail and Mawson Trail. The Jack Bobridge Track is a gentle cycle path linking Gawler, Lyndoch and Tanunda. The Barossa offers a stunning range of accommodation, from motels to stone cottages and exclusive luxury lodges. For more information call or visit Clare Valley Find a cluster of villages and wineries nestled in a picturesque valley famed for its wine and pioneering heritage. Although considered home to Australian Riesling, the Clare Valley produces many other varietals. It is also known for its craft beers, with three microbreweries now in full production. One way of visiting some of the 40 cellar doors is by hopping onto a bike and following the Riesling Trail, a dedicated cycleway from Clare to Auburn. There is a more challenging ride for mountain bikers called the Rattler Trail, which begins near Auburn. Interesting sites include the famous Mintaro Maze and Martindale Hall, where several scenes from the 1975 movie Picnic At Hanging Rock were filmed. For more information call or visit Flinders Ranges & Outback North west of the Riverland you will find the rugged yet spectacularly beautiful Flinders Ranges. Wilpena Pound is an ideal base from which to explore this stunning region that contains some of the oldest geological formations on the planet. From the Flinders Ranges, you can also explore the legendary Outback a semi-arid region offering deserts, salt lakes and giant dunes. Popular outdoor activities include horse riding, bushwalking, off-road driving, mountain biking and wildlife spotting. This is also a great place to learn about Australia s early European explorers and 40,000 years of Aboriginal heritage. For more information call or visit Murray River, Lakes & Coorong The region is immediately downstream of the Riverland. It offers a wealth of great holiday adventures wildlife watching, hiking, kayaking, wine tasting and relaxing on the river in a boat. The Coorong, where the Murray meets the sea, is an important sanctuary for native animals. The vast network of lakes and waterways is ideal for fishing and canoeing. There are plenty of ways to explore the Murray. Charter your own houseboat or take an extended cruise. See exotic wildlife in the open range sanctuary of Monarto Zoo, search for rare antiques in historic towns or go bushwalking, birdwatching or four-wheel driving through Ngarkat Conservation Park. The Murray River is the ideal place to relax and recharge your batteries.
