2 Welcome Stop for the legend, connect with our stories and stay for the day. Follow the Western Vistas Historic Byway where history was made. Delve into the history of the Wild West and how the legend of Buffalo Bill started. Catch our sunsets and go star gazing under our skies. Dinosaurs and fossils, oh my. Check out our prehistoric history. The Oakley area offers several attractions that are worth seeing time and time again. At our visitor s center, The Wild West Historical Foundation tells the story of William F. Cody and the legendary hunt that took place near Oakley that won Cody his famous title of Buffalo Bill. The twice life-sized monumental bronze sculpture of Buffalo Bill on his favorite horse Brigham taking aim at a buffalo is truly a magnificent sight to see. Monument Rocks, geologic remnants of the ancient inland seaway that once covered the region, are an excellent example of where fossils of ancient sea-creatures have been found. Many fossils and other artifacts that have been collected depicting the history of our area are on display at the Fick Fossil and History Museum and the Keystone Gallery. Recreation abounds in the area. We have a challenging nine-hole golf course where no tee time is needed. There is a modern, clean municipal swimming pool located next to the relaxing Annie Oakley Park area that includes a disc golf course. Privately owned recreational facilities offer additional activities and the area has superb upland game bird (pheasant and quail), turkey and deer hunting. So whether you stop in Oakley for a day or for a lifetime, you ll be glad you did. Stop for the Legend... Stay for the Day. History Early Homesteaders first came to the area that would eventually be known as Oakley in the 1870s, prior to most of the settling of the Plains that took place around the mid 1880s. The majority of these homesteaders in Northwestern Kansas arrived by taking a trip along the Smoky Hill Trail. In 1884, Judge Fredman and David D. Hoag officially founded Oakley. The settlement s original name was Carlyle, which was soon changed to Cleveland. Given the fact that there was already a nearby settlement named Cleveland, in 1885 Oakley received its official and life-long name. Founder David D. Hoag, affectionately named the township after his mother, Elizabeth Oakley Gardner Hoag. One of the first businesses that was established in the Oakley area was the State Bank of Oakley, in Soon after, in 1890, the first school district was organized for Logan County. After a devastating fire in 1904, which burned all the wooden businesses in town, new brick and concrete buildings were established. Many of these building are still in use today and can be seen while strolling through town. Witness an American soddie and remember life from the past. Oakley has been designated as the Fossil Capital of Kansas thanks to the world class fossils in the Fick Museum.

3 Attractions Buffalo Bill Cultural/Visitor Center & Bronze Sculpture Oakley celebrates the birthplace of the legend Buffalo Bill. The twice-life size bronze sculpture of Buffalo Bill on his horse Brigham in pursuit of a buffalo commemorates the 1868 contest between William F. Cody and William Comstock where Cody earned the title of Buffalo Bill. By the turn of the 20 th century, with his Wild West Show, Buffalo Bill became one of the most recognized and famous persons in the entire world. The bronze is one of the largest of its kind anywhere in the world and is one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Art. The artist, Charlie Norton of Leoti, KS, also sculpted the statue in front of the Logan County Courthouse, Survivor of the Plains. Fick Fossil & History Museum One of America s top 25 museums, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, makes this a must see attraction. Walk through history, from the prehistoric to the 20 th century. See for yourself the bones of the oldest most complete mosasaur skull, that has been documented, in the world. Oakley High School Irwin Stadium Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on April 9, 2013 the Oakley High School Stadium, aka Irwin Stadium and Irwin Field in Oakley, Kansas was built in 1939 by a New Deal works program, the Works Progress Administration (WPA). It has served at football games and track meets from 1939 to date. Monument rocks One of the 8 Wonders of Kansas. The Monument Rocks, called Pyramids by the locals, are located just 25 miles south of Oakley on Highway 83. These cretaceous chalk formations are stunning to capture from sunrise to sunset. Keystone Gallery After you visit the Rocks, stop by the Keystone Gallery on Highway 83. This art gallery includes local and international fossils and a great gift shop. Duff s Buffalo Ranch Tour See a herd of buffalo on 3,800 acres of western Kansas rangeland. There are sure to be photo opportunities on this up close and personal experience with the beautiful bison on the ranch. Butterfield Trail Museum Southwest of Oakley, off US 40, Russell Springs preserves the rich history of Butterfield s Overland Despatch stage line. The museum is housed in a 1887 renaissance-style building that was the original Logan County Courthouse. In September of 1965, it was dedicated as the Butterfield Trail Historical Museum. While you are in Russell Springs, visit, or stay, at the historic Logan House Hotel. Smoky Valley Ranch The Nature Conservancy This vast expanse of 16,800 acres of shortgrass and mixed grass prairie is located in Logan County and is a working cattle ranch.

The chalk badlands along the Smoky Hill River contain a rich fossil record of animals that lived in a vast inland sea that covered Kansas during the Cretaceous Period.

The swimming pool offers slides and other fun diversions for a cool break on a hot summer day.

Bertrand Park Located north of the Fick Museum, the gardens at the park honor our local service men and women and we remember Kansas Senator Stan Clark (Oakley).

City Park The park at Oakley s City Office Building, located at the corner of 2 nd Street and Hudson Avenue, features a statue honoring Logan County s Dough Boy troops of WWI with this famous Spirit

4 Smoky Valley Ranch The Nature Conservancy This vast expanse of 16,800 acres of shortgrass and mixed grass prairie is located in Logan County and is a working cattle ranch. It also serves as a working model and catalyst for shortgrass prairie conservation. The chalk badlands along the Smoky Hill River contain a rich fossil record of animals that lived in a vast inland sea that covered Kansas during the Cretaceous Period. The Smoky Valley Ranch features hiking, walking and riding trails. Parks Annie Oakley Park Annie Oakley Park means family fun. The swimming pool offers slides and other fun diversions for a cool break on a hot summer day. Enjoy the playground equipment, play 9 holes of disc golf, relax in the gazebo, use the exercise equipment as you stroll along the lighted trail. Bertrand Park Located north of the Fick Museum, the gardens at the park honor our local service men and women and we remember Kansas Senator Stan Clark (Oakley). There is a separate tribute for each branch of the service. The park includes beautiful gardens, a playground, basketball court and walking trails with exercise equipment. City Park The park at Oakley s City Office Building, located at the corner of 2 nd Street and Hudson Avenue, features a statue honoring Logan County s Dough Boy troops of WWI with this famous Spirit of the American Doughboy sculpture. This statue, created by artist Ernest Moore Dick Viquesney, is one of only three in Kansas.
