7 State of the U.S. Spa Industry By Eileen Pitts, ISPA Public Relations Manager For the 18 th year, the International SPA Association (ISPA) Foundation commissioned PwC to conduct its U.S. Spa Industry Study. The 2017 report presents the state of the industry in 2016, as indicated by total revenues, spa visits, average revenue per visit, the number of spa locations, and staffing levels, also known as the industry s Big 5 statistics. The information required to compile the Big 5 statistics was collected through a large nationwide survey of spa businesses which was conducted in spring The spa industry registered modest revenue growth of 3.1 percent in Total revenue is estimated to have increased from $16.3 billion in 2015 to a record $16.8 billion in The increase in spa revenues was driven mainly by a rising number of spa visits (+2.5 percent) and growth in the number of spa locations (+1.1 percent). In 2016, new spa openings are estimated to have exceeded spa closures by a margin of 240, bringing the total number of spa locations up to 21,260 from 21,020 in 2015 (+1.1 percent). The ISPA U.S. Spa Industry Study reflects a pleasing picture of steady growth in the industry. The key metrics are all continuing their upward trend and the numbers in employment highlight the importance of the spa industry to the US economy, said Colin McIlheney, Global Research Director for PwC. For the first time in the history of ISPA s U.S. Spa Industry Study, the total number of spa visits rose above 180 million to 184 million in 2016, up from 179 million in 2015 (2.5 percent increase). The industry s steady growth in overall revenue, locations, and revenue per visit is a promising indicator of the impact spas continue to make. The average revenue per visit increased slightly in 2016, to a just over $91 (+0.6 percent). Employment We are thrilled to see our industry s hard work and dedication truly pay off with more and more consumers enjoying spas, said ISPA President Lynne McNees. An increase in visits means higher demand of spa services, which demonstrates a very positive outlook. As jobs are created to meet this demand, we will continue to promote the benefits of a career in the spa industry. The study also reports nearly 33,000 job openings available in the spa sector alone. Employment in the spa industry can offer many benefits, such as schedule flexibility, opportunities to work in a variety of international environments, exceptional training, and career growth. The spa industry presents many opportunities for employment in a business that offers job security and career growth as it continues to flourish. At the 2017 ISPA Conference & Expo, the professional beauty and spa industries announced they have joined forces to elevate and celebrate careers in the spa industry. The Beauty Changes Lives Foundation has partnered with ISPA to launch a nationwide call to action. The GET YOUR DREAM JOB campaign 40
