Previous scientific analysis of the natural curative source, iodine-bromine water called "brine", had been carried out. It was known as a "curative well" amongst the local people, who made use of it for their treatment. 2

3 Later it was found that the origin of water, with its favourable influence on the vascular system, as well as the locomotive apparatus, is from a tertiary period, and it can reasonably be called "the gift from the deep". The reputation of the spa spread very quickly. In the years other accommodation facilities were built as the first two buildings became insufficient for the task. The spa park, with its distinctive species of trees, was established. Another construction period was undertaken in With the exception of the two World Wars, when rooms were transformed into a military surgery, Darkov Spa was fulfilling its purpose. Earl Larisch-Mönnich was the last owner of Darkov Spa before 1945, after which it came into the possession of the government for a number of years. As the brine is saved in the pockets of coal fields, the spa had to face the effects of the local coal mining activities, and for some time there was actual destruction of the spa. For this reason the construction of new facilities was started in the opposite suburbs of Karviná town. This new complex of interconnected buildings was put into operation in stages through the years 1976, 1980 and 1989, and became known as the Rehabilitation Sanatorium The buildings are characterized by the typical austere architecture of that period, but with its spatial facilities they allowed the treatment of immobile clients to be carried out with completely new diagnoses, especially for conditions after cerebral apoplexy, injuries or operations on the locomotive organs. Both spa resorts - Darkov Health Resort and the Rehabilitation Sanatorium - worked as one economic entity of the state-owned company. Thanks to the cessation of the coal mining activities, the original spa 3

buildings could be gradually reconstructed and renewed from 1989, and, by today, all of them meet with the demands of today's standards in spas on the highest level.

Because of its architectonic features some of the buildings were declared cultural sights and the spa park, which was renovated, was registered as a significant scenic sight. From September 1, 2003 Darkov Spa became a public limited company which continues its 135 years old tradition of the significant spa. With the help of investments put into modernization, the spa aspires to achieve still more qualitative and attractive surroundings. Rehabilitation Sanatorium 2 STRUCTURE Darkov Spa is divided into two health resorts: Rehabilitation Sanatorium and Darkov Health resort. But the whole Darkov Spa has four parts. Rehabilitation sanatorium, Darkov health resort, Regeneration centre and Centre of vitality. The head of Darkov Spa is General Director and the management of Darkov Spa consists of Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, it is called Secretariat. Darkov Health Resort consists of eight buildings, all of which are registered as cultural sights. They are situated in the beautiful surroundings of the spa park and provide a very pleasant and calming atmosphere. Darkov Health Resort is a historical part of Darkov Spa but was extensively reconstructed to gain a new burst of life and at present 4

provides very comfortable accommodation within a typical spa atmosphere. Established in 1976, the Rehabilitation Sanatorium is a newer part of Darkov Spa.

It is a huge complex of interconnected buildings that can be called, with a little exaggeration, a miniature town. At the disposal of clients of the Rehabilitation Sanatorium, there is accommodation, boarding, curative procedures and a large number of additional services under one roof, resulting in little necessity to leave the complex of the sanatorium. This is of course especially appreciated by the more seriously mobility-impaired clients. The complex of buildings is defined by the style of architectural austerity from the 1970 s and 1980 s. It offers clients the complete comfort of a modern, unobstructed spa facility which is, as was already mentioned, "under one roof". Clients can choose from single and double rooms, deluxe rooms and apartments, all of which are with comprehensive facilities. A number of the rooms were designed to be used by immobile clients and include a higher level of care attendance. Cultural house 3 PATIENTS Darkov Spa specializes in many healthy problems. So, for example people with diseases of locomotive organs, including conditions after accidents and operations, people with neurological diseases, diseases of the circulatory system or burn conditions. 5

Other services you have to pay by yourself. 4 TREATMENT PROGRAMS Darkov Spa is proud of its variety of therapeutical procedures which enable every client to undertake exactly the proper curative programme suitable for his or her demands. Darkov Spa provides nearly 90 kinds of procedures which are devided into a few groups: natural curative source, hydropathy, curative rehabilitaton, rehabilitation on devices, elctropathy, thermotherapy, phototherapy, lymfotherapy and others. Darkov Spa is excellent in the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system and neurological diseases. This is demonstrated by the treatment results and by positive reception of the patients. Darkov Spa is considered to be one of the most successful spas in its branch in the Czech Republic. We make use of a wide variety of therapeutic procedures and we lay emphasis on the use of traditional ways of rehabilitation whilst making use of our natural curative source, iodinebromine water. 8 For the clients of Darokov Spa they prepare full board with the possibility of choosing between dietary menus, low-fat meals, vegetarian cuisine, and also regional, vegetable and their excellent spa specialities. Their gastronomic team is also well known for their preparation of international cuisine, for example Arabic cuisine. They can adjust the boarding according to various desires of our guests. They also provide all types of known diets (e.g. well-balanced, reducing, salt-free, bland diet etc.). Darkov Spa has in its area several restaurants and coffee-bar. Regular dance evenings are continuously being arranged for spa guests, as well as various gastronomic activities. Darkov Spa is located near the historical and cultural centre of the town of Karviná. Guests have many possibilities in whch to spend their leisure time. 10 Karviná The town of Karviná, with more than inhabitants, is situated in the Moravian-Silesian region, in the north-east of the Czech Republic, about 20 km from the third biggest city of the country - Ostrava and in the immediate neighbourhood of Poland. The town of Karviná is a town with an abundance of history. Its past was influenced by its strategically advantageous location on the trade routes from Hungary to the Baltic countries. This location caused Karviná to become a commercial, economic and cultural centre of the whole area. More recently, this town has become a commercial and tourist center. It has also became a university town due to the establishment of the School of Business Administration of the Silesian University. The historical centre of the town with its castle Fryštát is within reaching distance for spa guests being about a 20 minute walk. SOURCES:
