+44 (0) Blessed with an unrivalled mix of natural beauty, Amerindian culture and incredible wildlife, the rich forested landscapes of Guyana provide a destination primed for rare adventure and unforgettable encounters. A jungle paradise still hidden under the radar of mass tourism, it is one of South America s best kept secrets. A chance to visit the world s widest single drop waterfall is then followed by time amongst the rare fauna and indigenous communities of the Iwokrama Rainforest. After spending two nights with the Makushi people of Surama, you ll then head across the rich Rupununi Savannah towards the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains and the remarkable setting of Karanambu. Home to world-renowned conservationist, Diane McTurk, this landscape provides refuge to a wealth of rare species and provides a spectacular backdrop for some memorable river safaris before heading back to Georgetown and journey s end. 3 ITINERARY DAY 1: GEORGETOWN On arrival in Guyana's historic capital, you will be met and driven on to your traditional downtown heritage hotel. DAY 2: GEORGETOWN - KAIETEUR FALLS Transferring to the city's local airport this morning you'll take a flight over the Demerara and Essequibo Rivers, crossing miles of unbroken tropical rainforest as you journey into the heart of the Kaieteur National Park. Your destination is Kaieteur Falls, which at nearly five times the height of Niagara Falls is the world's highest free-falling waterfall. These towering cascades are home to swooping flocks of white-chinned and white-tipped swifts, as well as the astonishingly colourful, Guianan Cock-of the-rock. (B,L) DAY 3: KAIETEUR FALLS - IWOKRAMA RAINFOREST Flying on to the small village of Annai today, you head next towards the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains. Transferring to a 4x4 vehicle on arrival, the journey then continues into the vast wilderness of the Iwokrama Rainforest, a protected forested region that is home to the Makushi people. Here you will be able to explore the trails in the company of a local ranger, making the most of an evening's walk around the lodge in search of birds, caimans, snakes and tree frogs. (B,L,D) DAY 4: IWOKRAMA RAINFOREST After an early dawn start in search of some rare birdlife, you'll then head towards Turtle Mountain, to enjoy an exhilarating hike to its summit. From up here the views across the forest canopy are simply breathtaking and the trail up provides an opportunity for spotting spider monkeys, howler monkeys, eagles and perhaps even the rare passing jaguar. The cool of the late afternoon then sees you heading out by boat, to visit the nearby Kurupukari Falls and its Amerindian petroglyphs. (B,L,D) DAY 5: IWOKRAMA CANOPY Continuing by 4x4, the drive today provides another opportunity to watch out for elusive jaguars, pumas, tapirs, capybaras and the myriad of birds that inhabit this rich landscape. The journey ends at the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway, lying at the southern edge of the reserve. From its vantage point, 30 metres above the forest floor, you can look out for some of the park's 500 species of birds, whilst a walk along the interpretative trail provides a fascinating insight into Iwokrama's connection with the local Makushi. (B,L,D)
DAY 6: IWOKRAMA CANOPY Another chance to enjoy the unique vantage point afforded by the long canopy walkway provides an opportunity to spot some of the birds not usually visible from the forest floor. Some of Guyana's 'must see' species include the purple-breasted cotinga, the crimson fruit crow and the black curassow. (B,L,D) DAY 7: IWOKRAMA RAINFOREST - SURAMA Departing the lodge you'll follow a trail deep into the Iwokrama Forest this morning, in search of the splendidly colourful Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock. Continuing on towards the Amerindian village of Surama, you'll then spend the next two nights amongst the Makushi people, the perfect opportunity to learn a little more about their lives and traditions. In the company of an indigenous guide, you'll also discover how the Makushi use medicinal plants in their cultural traditions, before taking an evening wildlife walk through the forest. (B,L,D) DAY 8: SURAMA Rising before dawn, you'll begin the day with an exhilarating climb up to the summit of Surama Mountain. After enjoying breakfast overlooking some stunning views across the savannah and out towards the Pakaraima Mountains, you'll then return to the village in time for lunch. This afternoon provides a chance to enjoy a three mile walk across the savannah and through the rainforest towards the Burro Burro River, where your guides will then paddle you down river in search of giant river otters, tapirs and spider monkeys. (B,L,D) DAY 9: SURAMA - ANNAI The road back to Annai affords an excellent opportunity to indulge in some savannah birdwatching. The Rupununi Savannah is to Guyana what the Gran Sabana is to Venezuela, a rich and vast area of grassland that supports an incredible array of avifauna. Here you can find some 250 different species of birds, 18 of which are native only to the lowland forests of Guyana. (B,L,D) DAY 10: ANNAI A dawn hike in the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains provides a chance to walk the Panorama Trail this morning. As the sun rises over the savannah and the villages, the views are almost magical and you may find yourself accompanied by any number of birds as you hike the trail. Today also presents an opportunity to visit a nearby Amerindian village, to enjoy a demonstration and an explanation of traditional cashew nut roasting, before finishing the day relaxing with drinks by the pool. (B,L,D)
DAY 11: ANNAI - KARANAMBU Next stop on the journey is the former cattle ranch at Karanambu, home to worldrenowned conservationist Diane McTurk. Set amidst a landscape that incorporates four distinct ecosystems, the area is home to a number of endangered species including giant otters, black caimans, jaguars and giant anteaters. Rich in human history too, the region has played host to famous explorers, naturalist and indigenous tribes, whilst the nearby Rupununi River can boast nearly 700 species of fish, more than anywhere else on earth. (B,L,D) DAY 12: KARANAMBU Today is devoted to exploring more of Karanambu and its varied habitats. With the savannah and the river offering up such a wealth of possibilities, the day sees you travelling by both boat and 4x4, to explore the river and forest up and downstream. (B,L,D) DAY 13: KARANAMBU - YUPUKARI Leaving Karanambu after breakfast this morning, you'll head out along the Rupununi River towards Caiman House, a busy centre for a range of local development projects. Later, in the company of skilled and expert guides, you'll explore by boat, searching out such elusive nocturnal species as tree boas, iguanas, frogs and piranha, as well as various insect, harmless spiders, possums and sleeping monkeys. (B,L,D) DAY 14: YUPUKARI - GEORGETOWN Your final morning in the jungle provides an opportunity to visit the village, to learn more about their way of life. Alternatively, you may like to join a birdwatching excursion and search out more of the abundant species of savannah, forest and river birds that occupy the rich jungle around Caiman House. After breakfast you then take the flight back to Georgetown, to enjoy a tour of the city that was once christened the 'Garden City of the Caribbean'. (B) DAY 15: GEORGETOWN Transfer to the airport today for the flight home. (B)
ACCOMMODATION ANNAI ROCK VIEW LODGE Rock View Lodge is nestled between the Amerindian villages of Annai and Rupertee in the North Rupununi Savannahs at the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains. Guests are accommodated in eight comfortable, well furnished and spacious suites. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with hundreds of palms, fruit and flower trees to enhance the natural beauty of the rolling hills. Evenings can be spent in the ranch house with its art collection, library and good music or at the Dakota Bar with members of the community. GEORGETOWN CARA LODGE Cara Lodge is the perfect place to soak up Guyanese heritage and culture. One of the oldest wooden buildings in Georgetown, it has become one of the best known hotels in the country. Originally built in the 1840s and consisting of two houses, the former home has become a unique hotel offering the tradition of a by-gone era, complete with modern comfort and services in a congenial family atmosphere. The Bottle restaurant is one of the best in the capital. There is also a bar with seating in a patio around a mango tree. IWOKRAMA CANOPY ATTA RAINFOREST LODGE Atta Rainforest Lodge is situated 500m from Iwokrama Canopy Walkway and is completely surrounded by tropical rainforest offering a complete immersion. The eight rooms offer views across the gardens to the forest and the ensuites have been designed to make the most of the unique location, with open topped showers. Visits to the walkway are scheduled at dawn so that you can welcome the chorus from the canopy and as the afternoon cools you can return to the canopy to experience the nature after dark. A series of trails allows additional wildlife and birdlife opportunities. For those interested in botany many of the trails have the key tree species marked. IWOKRAMA RAINFOREST IWOKRAMA RIVER LODGE Timber cabins at Iwokrama River Lodge overlook the Essequibo River, each with its own bathroom facilities and verandah. Meals are served in the main dining hall, where you can mingle with the rangers and staff. The lodge is the base for exploratory trips into the forest, where you can sling a hammock at one of the numerous satellite camps. There are probably few better places to see the jaguar in the wild with many visitors viewing the big cats at dusk or dawn. KARANAMBU
KARANAMBU LODGE Karanambu is a 110-square mile former cattle ranch and home of Diane McTurk, conservationist and a world-renowned expert on giant otters. The romance of the Rupununi pioneers lives on at Karanambu and the compound has the flavour of an Amerindian village. The accommodation is traditionally made clay brick cabins and includes private bathroom and verandah with hammocks. SURAMA SURAMA ECO LODGE Surama Eco Lodge provides simple, comfortable accommodation in four cabins, all with private bathrooms and constructed using local architecture and craftmanship. Dining and common relaxation areas are in a two-storey central building overlooking the savannah with vistas of the forest and mountains. All tours are managed and operated solely by the local Makushi community. YUPAKARI CAIMAN HOUSE Caiman House is a field station for ecological and educational research in the heart of Yupakari, a Macushi village on the Rupununi River. As a guest you have the unique opportunity to support and participate in an ongoing field study of the black caiman, the largest member of the alligator family and an endangered species. Accommodation is in simple but large, comfortable rooms with ensuite bathrooms. There is a lovely open sitting room inside and open deck to enjoy a drink at sunset or coffee at dawn.
