3 Itinerary in Detail DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN QUITO Arrive in Quito and transfer to Casa Aliso, a charming boutique style hotel in the stylish La Floresta neighborhood of Quito. Overnight Casa Aliso. DAY 2: QUITO We begin our Ecuador vacation with a half-day city tour of colonial Quito, including the bustling Independence Plaza, the dazzling gold-leafed altars of La Compania Church, and the impressive San Francisco Church. Visit the Mitad del Mundo Equatorial marker and ethnographic village and museum. Enjoy lunch al fresco at a lively café in the colonial center. The evening is free to explore this beautifully restored city with its busy pedestrian plazas, shops, coffee bars, pubs, and many excellent restaurants. Overnight Casa Aliso. [B] DAY 3: GALAPAGOS ISLANDS Private transfer in the morning to the domestic airport for the 2 hour flight to the Galapagos, departing at 9:45am, arriving Galapagos at 12:20pm. Upon arrival, meet your naturalist guide and transfer to the Eclipse. The ship's crew will greet you on board, take care of your luggage, and run through safety drills. Enjoy fresh fruit drinks as the yacht makes her way to the first site visit, a panga ride to Mosquera Island, a tiny islet that is home to an enormous population of sea lions and shorebirds. Keep your eyes peeled to the water, as we occasionally spy dolphins and orcas. As the sun sets, enjoy a typical Ecuadorian meal, the nightly briefing, and a formal presentation of the captain and crew. During the rest of this week, you will leisurely voyage through the stunning Galapagos Islands, among a varied landscape of diverse flora and fauna. Overnight onboard the Athala. [BLD] DAY 4: SANTIAGO / BARTOLOME ISLANDS Following breakfast, a dry landing brings us to Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island. The Sullivan Bay lava field presents a fascinating study in patterns. We may observe the impressions of trees which once existed, or the hornitos caused when pockets of water trapped beneath the lava flow exploded. In the century since this eruption, only a few plants have succeeded in re-colonizing the surface. Our naturalist guide will point out these hardy pioneers, proof of Nature s drive to expand and survive. Returning to the shore after our walk, we may observe oystercatchers fishing for crabs and mollusks in the tidal pools. Small coralline beaches welcome snorkelers to jump in with the playful sea lions which inhabit this area. We have lunch back onboard, then a visit to Pinnacle Rock on Bartolome Island, where penguins are often spotted. Hike up to the summit of the island for spectacular views of the Rock, the white-sand beaches and the lush mangrove swamps below. Identify various volcanic formations like spatter and tuff cones with your guide, keeping an eye out for pelicans and Galapagos hawks. Overnight on the Athala. 4 DAY 5: ISABELA On the western shore of Isabela Island, at the foot of Alcedo Volcano, lies Urbina Bay, a beautiful black sand beach. Here we may find sea turtle nesting sites as well as penguins and the uniquely Galapagos species of flightless cormorants. Keep your eyes peeled for giant tortoises and large land iguanas which enjoy feeding on the site s dense vegetation. Our afternoon visit is to Tagus Cove, historically used as an anchorage for pirates, buccaneers and whalers. Here you will see names of hundreds of ships painted on the high ridges a practice now banned. Our hike traverses through an area of sparse vegetation and stark volcanic landscape of Volcan Darwin. Our reward at the top of the ridge is a breathtaking view of the coves below as well as Darwin Lake. Follow this up with kayaking or a panga ride, watching for bluefooted boobies, marine iguanas, penguins, brown pelicans, brown noddy terns and swallow-tailed gulls. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 6: FERNANDINA / ISABELA This morning, we have a semi-wet landing at Punta Espinoza, Fernandina; the youngest and most pristine Island in Galapagos. Recent lava flows formed by an active volcano stretch their way around the coast. Hundreds of marine iguanas, the largest colony in Galapagos, bask in the sun along the rugged shoreline. Observe sea lion harems with resident bulls carefully guarding their territory. Flightless Cormorants build their nests on the point and Galapagos Hawks soar overhead. After lunch, we cross the Bolivar Channel where we often spot whales and dolphins riding the bow wave. Punta Vicente Roca on Isabela; is a wonderful snorkeling site, with opportunities to view sea turtles as well as myriad fish species. For those choosing to remain dry, a panga ride traces the spectacular geological rock formations. Nazca boobies, pelicans, swallow-tailed gulls, marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, and penguins are frequent inhabitants of this area. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 7: SANTIAGO This morning, we have a wet landing at Puerto Egas, Santiago. Stroll with your naturalist guide along the shoreline looking for octopus, starfish and other sea life caught in the tide pools. At low tide, catch a glimpse of marine iguanas as they feed on exposed green algae. Watch for great blue herons, lava herons, American oystercatchers and yellow-crowned night herons. Our walk ends at the grottos, deep pools of clear water where we encounter fur sea lions once on the verge of extinction. Before returning to the yacht, there is a snorkeling opportunity with opportunities to view massive numbers of brilliant tropical fish. As an alternative, you may use the kayaks to explore the marine environment and residents without getting wet. Following lunch, disembark for a hike through a magnificent Palo Santo forest, retracing trails once walked by pirates and whalers in search of a fresh water supply. A short walk takes us to a mangrove swamp where we may observe a variety of water birds as well as sea turtles which regularly use this beach as a nesting site. Slightly beyond lays a brackish lagoon, home to flocks of pink flamingos. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 8: SANTA CRUZ / CHARLES DARWIN STATION AND HIGHLANDS Visit the famous Charles Darwin Station on Santa Cruz Island and learn about current research and conservation initiatives including several breeding programs that hope to reintroduce specific tortoise Wildland Adventures Galapagos Adventure Cruise - Athala -4-

5 species back onto the island of their origin. Board 4X4 vehicles for the journey to the lush green highlands of Santa Cruz. Here we find the habitat for wild giant tortoises. Your naturalist guides also direct us to explore lava tubes and pit craters, all further evidence of the Galapagos eruptive past, now softened by deep vegetation and flowers. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 9: GENOVESE ISLAND Genovese is the northernmost island allowed visits by naturalist cruises. The islands is extremely remote and home to literally millions of birds belonging to a wide variety of species, including red footed boobies, frigates, swallow tailed gulls and endemic owls. El Barranco is a steep path with stairs carved into rock, leading to a plateau swarmed with avian life among a Palo Santo forest. Here we see Nazca boobies, Galapagos doves, mockingbirds, and petrels. Keep your eyes peeled for short-eared lava owls! The afternoon excursion to Darwin Bay allows us to luxuriate in soft white sand and a trail to lush mangroves, where we will see nesting red footed boobies. Other inhabitants include sea lions (which can sometimes be seen stretched out in the mangrove trees themselves). Snorkeling here is fantastic, with sharks, colorful reef fish, rays and turtles in abundance. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 10: NORTH SEYMOUR / RETURN TO QUITO Rise early to board the Zodiacs for a dry landing at North Seymour, a small geological uplift. Our final hike follows a trail leading us to swallow-tailed gulls, blue-footed boobies and the endemic land iguanas. Your guide will also lead you to the largest colony of magnificent frigate birds found in Galapagos. As we stroll along the beach, we find marine iguanas and sea lions body surfing the northern swells. After a light snack back onboard, your guide will accompany you to the Galapagos airport for the flight to the mainland departing the Galapagos at 10:00am, arriving Quito at 2:35pm, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Overnight at Casa Aliso. [B] DAY 11: DEPART Transfer to the airport for your return flight home or extend your trip to visit more of Ecuador's natural wonders. [B] END OF SERVICES Actual routes and activities may vary. Local trip coordinators reserve the right to change accommodations to similar quality alternatives. Shorter 6 day/5 night itineraries on Athala also available. Wildland Adventures Galapagos Adventure Cruise - Athala -5-

Upon arrival, meet your naturalist guide and transfer to the Eclipse. The ship's crew will greet you on board, take care of your luggage, and run through safety drills. Enjoy fresh fruit drinks as the yacht makes her way to the first site visit, a Zodiac ride to Sombrero Chino islet. This is a great introduction to the awesome geological formations you will be seeing and learning about throughout the voyage. Keep an eye out for colorful sally lightfoot crabs, sea lions, and many species of Darwin s finches. During the rest of this week, you will leisurely voyage through the stunning Galapagos Islands, among a varied landscape of diverse flora and fauna. Overnight onboard the Athala. [BLD] DAY 4: SANTA CRUZ / RABIDA This morning s visit is to Cerro Dragon, on the north end of Santa Cruz Island. Follow your guide on a footpath to endemic land iguanas. Once part of the Darwin Station s breeding program, these repatriated iguanas display orange-yellowish skin with large spines along their backs. Walk quietly to keep from startling the pink flamingos that feed in the salt water lagoon, along with common stilts and pintail ducks. Along the trail, keep your eyes open for Darwin s Finches and Yellow Warblers. There will be time for a swim following the hike. Following lunch, we move onto our next adventure. Located south of Santiago, Rabida is one of the most volcanically varied islands in the chain. Geologically consisting of eroded hills and lava emitted from spatter cones have resulted in island's striking colors. A visit begins with a wet landing on the deep maroon colored northern beach. Marine iguanas and sea lions are often seen resting in the shade of the caves nearby. Behind the beach is the salt brush home where the brown pelicans make their nests. On the cliffs above the pelicans, blue-footed and masked boobies can be seen. Rabida also offers the best lagoons in the islands for viewing flamingos. Continuing up the rocky red cliffs a short minute walk leads to a cliff overhang with a fantastic view of the cove with the ocean, lagoon and scarlet cliffs. Returning back to the beach Rabida offers excellent snorkeling opportunities with sharks and manta rays commonly seen. Kayaks will also be available for those who choose to remain dry. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] -8-

9 DAY 5: ISABELA ISLAND Isabela, by far the Galapagos largest island, is formed by the continual eruption and spread of five young volcanoes. Our introduction to this marvelous island comes through a dry landing this morning at Puerto Villamil, Isabela Island s very laid-back port. We enjoy a visit to the Tortoise Breeding Center, created to protect these unique animals in the earliest years of their lives from the threats of invasive species such as pigs and donkeys. From here we move to the wetlands just outside of the town. This bio-rich area consists of lagoons, swamps and mangroves which are home to myriad bird species, including stilts, whimbrels, pintail ducks, gallinules and other shore birds. Following lunch onboard, we return to Isabela to visit a site with a decidedly human history, the Wall of Tears. Formerly the site of a penal colony between , prisoners were forced to build this wall by hand, stone by stone., only to be ordered to tear it down and begin over. This now historic site took the lives of thousands during its cycle of construction/destruction. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 6: FLOREANA ISLAND We begin our day on Floreana with a visit to Post Office Bay, perhaps not the most scenic, but probably the most famous site in Galapagos. Here we visit a post barrel, originally put into use in the late 18 th Century by sailors onboard English whaling vessels. You are invited to leave a post card and to pick up any mail from your home area. This island could be the most infamous of all the Galapagos, due to many intriguing stories surrounding the pioneering families, which we shall hear about from our naturalist guides. Snorkeling here is rewarded with ample marine life such as rays and reef sharks, and the turquoise lagoons are home to brilliant pink flamingos. You may also observe stilts and pintail ducks in the brackish waters. Sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand dunes. Following lunch, we step ashore at Punta Cormorant, a greensand beach alive with the sounds of sea lions. Follow a trail to a brackish lagoon, home of the pintail ducks, common stilts, and the pinkest Flamingos in the world. Your guide will help identify a rich variety of plants including morning glories, cutleaf daisies, palo verdes and scalesia, all while approaching a beach with power soft sand. Sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand dunes and brilliantly-colored rays swim in the shallow water. After the walk, we have an opportunity to snorkel or kayak at Champion Islet. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 7: SAN CRISTOBAL The morning finds us at Cerro Brujo s beautiful beach, the site of Charles Darwin s first step on Galapagos soil. We visit a a lagoon used by the locals for salt mining, as well as habitat for two rare species of halophytes, plants which thrive in soils with high salt content. Our afternoon navigation takes us past Leon Dormido, the iconic Kicker Rock. We land at Isla Lobos, named after its large colony of sea lions, also called lobos or wolves in Spanish. Snorkeling here will likely lead you to close encounters with the playful mammals, particularly the friendly and curious pups. Keep your eyes peeled for blue footed boobies, as this basaltic island is also an important nesting site, offering an excellent opportunity to observe their comical stiff-legged mating dance and sky pointing behaviors. Frigates and a second mammal species, the fur sea lion, may also be found here. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 8: SANTA CRUZ ISLAND The main population center of the Galapagos Islands, Puerto Ayora, may come as a shock after the primeval quiet of the more -9-

10 remote islands. But it is here that we visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and learn of the pioneering efforts by scientists, guides, rangers and park managers to preserve this wondrous UNESCO World Heritage site. Continuing our visit of Santa Cruz, we travel by bus to the lush green of the highlands. The scenery gradually changes as we wind our way through all seven vegetation zones found in Galapagos. Here we visit the tortoise reserve where we encounter giant tortoises in their natural habitat. We visit Los Gemelos, Spanish for The Twins, a pair of large pit craters, and habitat for the brilliant red male vermilion flycatcher. A special treat is a stop at "the tunnels," the largest lava tubes found in Galapagos, and eye-popping evidence of the Islands volcanic origins. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 9: ESPANOLA ISLAND This morning, we have a dry landing at Punta Suarez, where we witness the highest rate of endemic species in Galapagos. Sea lions noisily greet us as we land on their beach. Curious Hood mockingbirds peck at our shoelaces. From April to November, the waved albatross, found only on Espanola, perform their wild mating ritual. Colonies of blue-footed boobies engage in sky-pointing to show off for potential mates. Nazca boobies busily care for their young. Stunning swallow-tailed gulls are the only nocturnal gulls in the world. Red-billed tropicbirds take shelter under the cliffs. We also find Darwin s Finches, Galapagos Doves and Galapagos Hawks. Here we may observe a unique species of marine iguana identified with traces of red and green colorings. Colorful sally light-foot crabs crawl along the shoreline near the dramatic "blow hole." Following lunch onboard, a wet landing brings us to Gardner Bay. Walk along seemingly endless stretches of this white sandy beach where you ll find large colonies of sea lions. There is no trail to follow so this is a chance to explore and discover Galapagos Hawks, Darwin s Finches or a Hood Mockingbird. Swim with sea lions from the beach. Your expert naturalist guides can point you to an excellent snorkeling site off Gardner Islet with colorful diversity of sea life near Tortuga Rock or caves covered with invertebrates. Passengers are also permitted to use the kayaks at this particular site. Return to the yacht at sunset for your briefing followed by our farewell dinner. Overnight on the Athala. [BLD] DAY 10: RETURN TO QUITO Rise early for our last activity, a Zodiac excursion to Black Turtle Cove, a series of tranquil inlets which serve as nurseries for sea turtles, rays and sharks, as well as important nesting sites for seabirds. Disembark and return to the airport with your guide in time for your afternoon flight to the mainland departing Galapagos at 10:00am, arriving Quito at 2:35pm, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
