2 PERU SHORT AND SWEET: Daily Itinerary: Flight Departs on May 27 th. From Chicago Day 1, May 28 Lima / Cusco / Sacred Valley Tour Director will provide airport assistance in Lima and take the short, but spectacular, flight over the snowcapped Andes to the oldest inhabited city in the hemisphere, Cusco, at an elevation of 11,440 feet. Immediate transfer to the Sacred Valley at 8,200 feet of altitude. (Lima Cusco flight for group not included in land price) Pisac Market Visit the colonial village of Pisac, where a unique Indian Market takes place daily. The variety of products offered is overwhelming, from pottery with reproductions of archaeological pieces, to all kinds of textiles, jewelry and Peruvian handicrafts. During our visit to this bustling marketplace, we will have the opportunity to bargain with the artisans and indigenous traders. Afternoon free for hiking in the valley or enjoying the hotel grounds. Day 2, May 29 Maras, Moray and Ollantaytambo Archeological Complex Moray Terraces and Maras Salt Pools We pass through unspoiled and picturesque Andean communities on our way to the Incan agricultural experimental center of Moray, famous for its sunken amphitheater, made up of four circular terraces which appear to fade away into the earth like an artificial crater. The site was apparently an Inca agricultural research station filled with fertile earth and watered by complex irrigation systems designed for experimenting with crops at various altitudes (some of which run down to depths of 100 meters). Continue to the impressive Maras Salt Pools, formed by water, emerging from a lake inside a mountain in the Urubamba Valley. It s an amazing view of evaporating ponds for the extraction of salt. Learn about ancestral techniques, which are still used, in agricultural, irrigation and saltrecollection tasks, as well as in Andean festivals and rites. Ollantaytambo Archaeological Complex Continue to the Ollantaytambo archaeological complex. The Incas built it as a fort that included a temple, agricultural terraces and an urban area. There are two distinct sectors: the religious & worship zone and the residential area. Ollantaytambo was an important administrative center with probable military functions based on the walls and towers. There are also traces of ancient roads

3 and aqueducts. We see the town of Ollantaytambo, which is called a "Living Inca Town" since the inhabitants maintain very old practices and customs. Overnight at our hotel in Sacred Valley. (B,L) Day 3, May 30 Machu Picchu Mid morning Vistadome train ride through the sacred valley of Urubamba to the "Lost City of the Incas" Machu Picchu. Perched 8,200 feet above the valley, it was hidden by mountains and semi-tropical jungles for 400 years until discovered by Hiram Bingham of Yale University in Archaeologists believe that the Inca "Virgins of the Sun" took refuge from the Spanish Conquistadors here. Guided tour of the ruins (approximately 2 hours). Lunch is at the Belmond s Sanctuary Lodge located just a few steps from the Inca citadel. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Machu Picchu. (B,L,D) Day 4, May 31 Machu Picchu Free Day. Return train ride Free morning to enjoy one of the most incredible sights on earth, the sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Take as much time as needed to study these magnificent ruins or hike the steep stone-paved trail of Huayna Picchu, the pyramid-shape mountain above Machu Picchu for a breathtaking view of the site (reservation and extra fee are needed). Instead, we may choose to stroll to the Inca Bridge (a secret entrance used by the Inca's army), walk toward the Inca Trail to find the historic Intipunku or Sun Gate or just enjoy the thermal springs of the town. Entrance fee included. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Machu Picchu. (B,D) *An extra guide can be booked for a Huayna Picchu hike from 7am to 10am for $110 per person. This must be booked well in advance as it is popular and limited to 500 visitors per day. It requires an additional fee to Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. The entrance ticket has to be booked and paid for 2 hours in advance and is non-refundable. Day 5, June 1 Machu Picchu / Return to Cusco Morning return to Cusco. Walking Tour of San Blas neighborhood We visit the emblematic Cusco neighborhood of San Blas, filled with narrow typical streets, charming small homes, galleries and craft workshops where we see local artisans at work. Cusco is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the western hemisphere and discovering its hidden treasure is a delight. We will visit a local temple. Built in 1560 during the colonial period, it houses a Baroque pulpit that is itself a masterpiece of carpentry and wood carving. It is attributed to the renowned indigenous artist Diego QuispeTito. (B) Day 6, June 2 Cusco City Tour Visitors are caught up in the excitement of touring the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, a delightful combination of Inca and colonial architecture. We visit important landmarks such us Cusco's Cathedral (guided tour), Plaza de Armas and Koricancha, The Temple of the Sun. As we explore the oldest continuously inhabited city in the western hemisphere, we see the nearby ruins of Kenko, Puca- Pucara, Tambomachay and the Sacsayhuaman fortress, an imposing example of Inca military architecture. Perhaps choose an optional tour of a cooking class or biking. Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at our hotel in Cusco. (B,D)

4 Day 7, June 3 Cusco / Lima Colonial Lima and Modern Lima Fly from Cusco to Lima. (Flight not included in land price). Today we experience both the colonial and modern sections of Lima. Colonial sites include the lovely Plaza Mayor, the Government Palace, San Francisco Church and the exquisite Torre Tagle Palace - modern day seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Modern Lima We will have a brief tour of modern Lima, among the ten largest cities in the Americas and the thirty largest in the world. Lima offers the sophistication of a modern and cosmopolitan city. We drive along the fashionable districts of Miraflores (possible stop for last minute shopping) and San Isidro, El Parque del Amor (The Park of Love) and the striking beaches of Costa Verde. Time for a late lunch on own at Cala restaurant, located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, before transfer to Lima airport for departure flight. Arrive home full of great memories of the rich tradition of Colonial Lima, the snowcapped roaring Andean mountains and lush valleys and the zig-zag road to the overwhelming sight of Machu Picchu - amazing legacy the Incas.
