2 ARTISTIC PORTRAITS OF PERU May 13 22, 2016 Dear Member, Rich in both ancient and contemporary culture from the royal Incas and colonial Spanish to a vibrant presentday society Peru offers spectacular artistic and scenic treasures. We invite you to join Annie Morse from the Department of Museum Education and explore the magnificent Inca ruins at Machu Picchu, the colonial treasures and museums of Lima and Cuzco, and the extraordinary scenery of the Sacred Valley. Start in the capital city of Lima, the City of Kings and once the center of Spain s colonial empire, and visit important architectural icons including the Plaza de Armas. Discover 4,000 years of Peruvian pre-columbian history at the Larco Herra Museum and enjoy a welcome dinner at the privately owned Casa Aliaga (1535). In the Sacred Valley, learn about the region s traditional textiles from a master weaver and about the lasting legacy of Andean music, then spend time with Peter Frost, a preeminent scholar of Incan and pre-incan history and archeology. In Cuzco, destinations include the Cuzco Cathedral containing over 400 paintings from the Esquela Cuzqueña (Cuzco School) the Inca Historical Museum, and Andahuaylillas, featuring the magnificent interiors of the Church of San Pedro, the Sistine Chapel of the Americas. No trip to Peru would be complete without a visit to the Lost City of the Incas at Machu Picchu and the site s hidden places, like the Gate of the Sun and Temple of the Moon. An optional pre-tour explores important archeological sites on Peru s northern coast. We hope that you will join us on this special trip to Peru. Space is limited, and early reservations are encouraged.
