This booklet provides some background information about the village of Baardskeerdersbos, a village located in a valley with an old-fashioned sense of space and ruled by Nature. 2 SETTING AND LOCATION Looking up at the village from the Boesmansriver To the North of the village are the Koueberge ( Cold mountains ), predominantly covered with undisturbed fynbos. The Western boundary largely follows the Boskloof-river, a tributary of the Boesmansriver. To the East there is mainly agricultural land and the Southernmost part of B bos touches the Boesmansriver. The farms and reserves in the Baardskeerdersbos Valley are generally large. Sub-division of these properties is not allowed anymore. The Valley will always maintain this sense of space as it has now. Below the distances are shown from Baardskeerdersbos to various towns in the area and to Cape Town and Swellendam (the latter two not on scale). 3 THE URBAN EDGE The urban edge is fixed. The hamlet of Baardskeerdersbos can never expand outside of its present reach and the farms, smallholdings and natural lands outside the residential area of Baardskeerderbos can not be sub-divided anymore. As such Baardskeerdersbos will always rank as a small rural node with the historical role and function of an agricultural settlement and conservation center, surrounded by farms and nature reserves. Keeping the tranquil rural character intact is paramount for the inhabitants of Baardskeerdersbos. As per 2017 there are 130 plots within the urban edge, with the smallest plot about 900m2 and most of the plots around 2000m2. Sub-division of larger plots is allowed but with a minimum size of 4000m2. The maximum possible amount of plots within the urban edge will be around 160 plots. Baardskeerdersbos will never have more than a few hundred inhabitants.

4 VERY SHORT HISTORY The Chainoqua, a large Khoekhoe group, lived in the area around present Baardskeerdersbos ( Bbos ) since at least 2000 years ago. A cave near Baardskeerdersbos, Byenes Cave, with sheepbones and pottery, provides evidence for the presence of Khoekhoe until the mid-18th century. The name Baardscheerdersbosch dates back to 1660 when an expedition team of five men, sent by the founder of the Cape Colony, Jan van Riebeeck, reported on the valley and its Khoekhoe-residents. Probably as early as 1725, a circular loan-farm on the Bosjesmanrivier (the present Boesmansriver, running through the Baardskeerdersbos Valley) was granted by the VOC to Freeburgher Jan Cloete. This marks the beginning of the permanent settlement of Bbos. From the end of the 18th century to the mid-20th century, the Baardskeerdersbos farm ( Farm 213 ), was in the hands of Philip Fourie and Wessel Groenewald and their descendants. First still as a loan farm and, as from 1813, in permanent ownership. The residential area of farm 213 was marked out as subdivisions in 1910 and Baardskeerderbos got a shop, a church, a post-office and a school.

5 WATER Baardskeerdersbos has its own water-source (bore-hole up the mountain above Baardskeerdersbos) and waterpurification plant. The water from this source is solely used for the village itself. A leivoor in Proteastreet, Baardskeerdersbos The mountains above Baardskeerdersbos (covered with the indigenous Fynbos of the Cape Flora and largely clean from alien invasive vegetation) are a catchment area. The water from this catchment runs off through streams in the Boskloof above Baardskeerdersbos and in the kloofs of the neighboring farm 215 private nature reserve into the Boesmansriver below Baardskeerdersbos and into the Uilkraalriver, which both run off into the Uilkraal Estuary at Franskraal. Baardskeerdersbos produces a reliable and sustainable amount of water for the village. Thirty-nine of the (at present) 130-odd plots in Baardskeerdersbos have, next to municipal water-access, traditional leiwater rights from the Boskloof stream for irrigation purposes. The Baardskeerdersbos Leivoor Association manages the distribution of this leiwater as well as the maintenance of the furrows and pipes. 7 THE BAARDSKEERDERSBOS ART ROUTE Since 2008 a group of artists who have pioneered a creative lifestyle in this small and unpretentious village, have opened their houses and studios to share their creativity with art-lovers. The Baardskeerdersbos Art Route is becoming legendary and it flourishes over two weekends a year in Spring and Autumn.

8 THE FARMER S MARKET Every last Saturday of the month, the B bos Farmer s Market takes place in and around the Strandveld Pub in the village. This hugely succesful event attracts hundreds of people from the wider area. All kinds of fresh products from the surrounding farms are sold at this market such as meats, fish, eggs, vegetables, bottled and pickled farm-made goods and foods.
