Welcome to Banff Alberta Welcome to the 2017 Convention from your President Neil Waugh It is with great pleasure that my wife Ute and I welcome you to the 2017 PLCAC 63 rd Annual Convention in Banff Alberta located within Banff National Park. The town of Banff is alive with adventure and wonder, surrounded in all directions by strikingly beautiful and rugged mountains. A wide variety of wildlife can be spotted virtually everywhere throughout the park and occasionally in the town. The town of Banff and surrounding area, offers endless options for activity and exploration every day. We have prepared a great convention full of many exciting events for delegates that we know you will enjoy during your stay with us. On behalf of the PLCAC Board, I would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to all our sponsors for their support during the PLCAC 2017 convention. Welcome to Banff! Neil K. Waugh PLCAC President, Page 4

The DESTINATION The world renown resort town of Banff, Alberta, located within Banff National Park, spans 6,641 square km. (2,564 square mi.) of valleys, mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers. In 1883, three Canadian Pacific Railway construction workers stumbled across a cave containing hot pools while attempting to scale Sulphur Mountain in Alberta s Rocky Mountains. It was not long after that Prime Minister John A. Macdonald stepped in and reserved 10 square miles around the springs, leading to the eventual birth of Banff National Park and the Parks Canada system. The peaks of Mount Rundle and Mount Cascade, dominate the town of Banff s skyline. On Banff Avenue, the main thoroughfare, boutiques and restaurants mix with châteaustyle hotels, souvenir shops as well as a vibrant range of art galleries and museums. The town is just 4 square km. (1.5 square mi.), so most things are within a 10 minute walk. The surrounding parkland is home to wildlife including elk, caribou, cougar, deer and grizzly bears. With easy access to pristine wilderness, endless outdoor adventures, jaw-dropping sights, and a vibrant history and culture, there is a lifetime s worth of things to do in Banff and Banff National Park. Page 5

The VENUE Located in the heart of Banff National Park, the world famous Fairmont Banff Springs and Conference Centre stands as a landmark in the picturesque alpine town of Banff, Alberta. Canada s spectacular Castle in the Rockies, has been providing legendary hospitality to guests since Fairmont Banff Springs is a year-round luxury mountain resort that offers a championship golf course during the summer, unparalleled skiing in the winter, the award winning European-style Willow Stream Spa, and a wide variety of on-site dining options. The Banff Springs Conference Centre, connected to the hotel, was first opened in 1991 and reflects world-class professional meeting facilities supported by a comprehensive array of professional and state-of-the-art services. Wi-fi and the aquatic and fitness centre access are complimentary for PLCAC delegates. For a full list of amenities visit the hotel website at There is limited space at the Fairmont Banff Springs during the PLCAC convention. Register early to avoid disappointment. The special convention rates are being offered to PLCAC delegates from May 10th to May 24th inclusive, subject to availability. For stays outside these dates, please contact the hotel directly. Page 6

Getting to the HOTEL Although it is 120 km (75 miles) from the town of Banff, Calgary International Airport (YYC) is the closest airport. It handles major airlines from around the world with daily non-stop and direct flights. As transportation to the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel is not provided by PLCAC, guests may choose to rent a vehicle or take a shuttle service from the airport. Most travelers choose to rent a car, as it provides them with the most flexibility. The drive from Calgary Airport to the Fairmont Banff Springs is approximately a 1-3/4 hour drive. If this is your first trip to the area, it is recommended that you undertake the road journey only if you can reach Banff in daylight. The scenery as you approach the mountains is very beautiful, and it would be a shame to miss it. Also, wildlife is most active at dusk, and driving into Banff National Park as darkness approaches requires extra caution. If you prefer to take a shuttle to the hotel, several companies offer this service for approximately $60-70 each way. The town of Banff is located inside the Banff National Park. In 2017, entrance into the Park is complimentary as part of Canada s 150 th birthday celebrations. At the Fairmont Banff Springs, the self parking rate is $21.25 plus taxes per day and valet parking is $39.00 per day plus taxes that includes in/out privileges. Page 7

WHAT TO PACK Weather in the Rocky Mountains varies a tremendous amount literally from one valley to the next and from one hour to the next. There also is a large variation between day time and night time temperatures. Expect early spring-type weather in May in Banff with temperatures ranging from a low of 2 C (36 F) to a high of 16 C (61 F). At this time of the year, it is usually sunny but it can be chilly. Showers are always a possibility. It would be wise to bring a warm jacket and be prepared to dress in layers when outdoors or while taking part in any of the convention optional activities. Restaurants in the Fairmont Banff Springs have adopted a resort casual dress code. Most restaurants in downtown Banff are designated casual, a few are designated resort casual. With exception of the Optional Activities, all convention events will take place indoors. Registered delegates will receive information that will include specific dress codes for all convention events. This convention dress code guide will also be posted on (password Canada16). Page 17

BANFF FUN FACTS Human habitation in the Banff area can be traced back 10,700 years. Established in 1885, Banff was the first national park in Canada and the third established in the world. The name Banff is derived from Banffshire, Scotland, the birthplace of two of the town s founders. Banff is the highest town in Canada at about 4,500 feet above sea level. Banff National Park is home to the following seven National historic sites: Skoki Lodge, Abbot Pass Hut, Howse Pass, Cave and Basin, Banff Park Museum, Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, and the Cosmic Ray Station on Sanson Peak. The largest lake in the park, Lake Minnewanka, is man-made. When it was dammed, the water level rose and drowned the town of Minnewanka Landing. Divers can go scuba diving in Lake Minnewanka and visit the underwater abandoned town. Sulphur Mountain is a mountain in Banff National Park overlooking the town of Banff. The mountain was named in 1916 for the hot springs on its lower slopes. The most famous hot springs, the Cave and Basin, was discovered by Canadian Pacific Railway workers William and Tom McCardell and Frank McCabe in 1883 when they descended through the skylight entrance into the cave using a felled tree. The Banff Springs Hotel was built between spring 1887 and spring 1888 by the Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.). The Banff Springs Hotel was originally accidentally built backwards; with the amazing mountain vista views available to the kitchen staff and not the paying guests. Renovations were made to correct this... eventually. Fire destroyed the original hotel in April, In the Firefighters Museum of Calgary there is a photo of the Banff Springs following the fire with a note below that reads, When a call came in from the C.P.R., firefighters raced out to the Banff Springs Hotel, towing their pumper on a freight car at an unprecedented speed and arriving only an hour and forty minutes after leaving Calgary. Fairmont Banff Springs is haunted! Sam the helpful bellhop, the goodguy bartender who has been known to tell individuals they ve had enough and to go to bed, the headless bagpiper and, most famously, the bride who fell to her death on her wedding day, all make an appearance from time to time. The Banff Springs missing room 873 has long been the subject of speculation. Some say that during the construction of the original wooden hotel, the contractor made an error, building a room with no windows or doors and that the room was only discovered after a fire broke out in Others believe a murder occurred in the original room and because both guests and staff were so troubled by the subsequent hauntings in the room, it was closed to any use. You decide! Page 18
