EMPOWERING COASTAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH MARINE CONSERVATION
COBI promotes the effective participation of coastal communities to preserve marine biodiversity and establish sustainable fisheries MARINE HECTARES 47K IN RESTORATION INHABITANTS 14K BENEFITED MARINE SPECIES WITH +100 SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT
Ba ja California Peninsula Historically, Baja California has had a unique culture of community stewardship and has used the marine environment in an responsible way. Together with our community partners, we are strengthening this view to become an inspirational model on a national and international level. Communities have voluntarily established networks of marine reserves in their fishing grounds. Together with them, and our international partners, we are creating seafood markets that reward their good management and social practices. Midriff Islands Region The spectacular and unique biological richness of this region makes it a priority area for marine conservation. Together with the government and our community partners, we are promoting community-based proposals to ensure the conservation and sustainable management of this treasure and to make sure local people receive the benefits from its natural richness. Mesoamerican Reef The Mesoamerican reef is the second largest coral reef in the world. We are collaborating with more than 40 institutions comprising fishing communities, environmental and fisheries authorities, research centers, foundations and non-profit organizations, through the Kanan Kay Alliance, to establish a no-take zone network to conserve marine ecosystems and improve ecological and socioeconomic dynamics. CROSS-CUTTING PROGRAMS Marine Conservation Science In partnership with some of the world s leading universities and some of the most outstanding communities that have invested in restoring the ocean s richness, we are undertaking cutting-edge science that brings political leverage to the socio ecological impacts of restoring the natural capital. Public Policy Good community-based practices should be endorsed by fair laws. Together with the technical commissions in legislative chambers and officers from the main departments in charge of marine ecosystem conservation and management in Mexico, we are analyzing how laws could be made more efficient to help promote local stewardship of our marine and coastal natural capital.
Theory of Change Solutions to promote the sustainable use of the marine environment require a holistic approach. Without suitable economic incentives, marine conservation will not become a profitable economic investment. Together with our community partners who are investing in restoring their natural capital, we promote market-based solutions and inform policy makers to strengthen community privileged access rights to the marine environment. We have also established an alliance with the Mexican government to help improve the efficiency and transparency of marine resources management in Mexico. Goals for the future Our team foresees three main goals that we will work on achieving, conjointly with our partners, over the next five years: A large-scale interinstitutional movement that promotes the application of ecosystembased fisheries management in Mexico. A clear system of privileged access rights to marine ecosystems and marine resources to promote local stewardship of the marine environment. Theory of change. In the centre, the vicious circle of environmental degradation; on the outside, the main strategy to be implemented in our projects. Suitable laws and committed markets that reward the good practices used in managing marine ecosystems of Mexico.
Comunidad y Biodiversidad (COBI) is a non-profi t organization that promotes the conservation of coastal and marine biodiversity through community participation. Since 1999, we have worked hand in hand with the communities to strengthen dialogue and public participation in order to make decisions on how to manage the natural capital. In the last 14 years we have developed more than 150 projects in 15 coastal communities, channelling fi nancial and human resources for the marine conservation in México. Currently, we are working in the Baja California Peninsula, the Midriff Islands and Mesoamerican Reef regions, which are supported by our public policy and marine conservation science crosscutting programs. COBI is comprised of a team of 30 professionals, working from our offi ces in Sonora, Baja California Sur, Quintana Roo and Mexico City.
