1 PROGRAMME INFORMATION Study and Visit Japan s Modernisation and Post-War Experience March 2016 Japan 0
2 Project Summary Japan s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), in partnership with Okayama University and ASEAN University Network (AUN), is going to organise the Study and Visit Japan s Modernisation and Post-War Experience 2016 programme which offers ASEAN students a unique opportunity to visit and learn the modernisation process of Japan after its war experiences focusing on the Meiji Restoration process, experiences of democratisation and reconstruction of the nation. The study and visit programme includes the following itineraries: Okayama, Kurashiki, Ohkunoshima Island, Kure, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Ohtsushima Island, Shimonoseki, and Hagi from March The scholarship covers the land arrangement (programme fees, accommodation, meals, kits and bus transportation) in Japan within the inclusive dates amounting to JPY 80,000 (roughly around USD 1,000). The round-trip airfare, visa processing fee and travel insurance shall be borne by the participants. With the strong and good relations between ASEAN and Japan, the programme also aims to showcase the culture, tradition and the people of Japan to the ASEAN students to further strengthen its people to people relationship and to enhance social interaction and communication skill, as well as to explore its diverse perspectives and integrate it to their academic excellence. The programme is also a good venue for networking and building long-lasting friendships with the future leaders of the ASEAN region. Okayama University Okayama University (OU), one of Japan s leading national universities, is located in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture. One of our two main campuses, Tsushima Campus, is situated on 160 acres in downtown Okayama city and has eleven faculties and seven graduate schools (Master s and Doctoral), embracing humanities, social, natural, environmental and life sciences, and pedagogies. Approximately 14,000 students, including 600 international students, currently enjoy their student life at OU, and 1,400 research & teaching staff and 1,200 administrative staffs are engaged in educational and research activities, and university management as well. OU has a key role in Japan s universities strategic grouping. Among others, Six National Universities Network or SUN seems most important. SUN is joined by Chiba, Niigata, Kanazawa, Nagasaki and Kumamoto, all of which are equally very comprehensive and prestigious, and also used to be Medical Universities even before World War II. Consequently, SUN s international initiative, Six National Universities International Education and Research System, or SUN/SixERS was officially launched in April 2013 and has been developing the consortium-toconsortium cooperation with ASEAN University Network or AUN. 1
3 Okayama City is the capital of the Okayama Prefecture with a population of 700,000 approximately. Located in the heart of Western Japan, Okayama offers very good train & bus accessibility not only to Kansai (Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, etc), Chugoku (Hiroshima etc) and Kyushu (Fukuoka etc), but also to Shikoku Island (Takamatsu etc) and San-in (Izumo etc). Okayama is famous for its mild weather and indeed known as the Sunniest Prefecture in Japan and is recognized as one of the safest places in Japan in terms of natural disasters, such as typhoons or earthquakes. Okayama is also rich in soil and produces varieties of fruits, among others, nation-wide popularity of peach and grape (Muscat). ASEAN University Network Established in November 1995 in response to the 4 th ASEAN Summit s call to deepen regional identity and build human resources through strengthening the existing network of universities and institutions of higher learning, the ASEAN University Network (AUN) is an integral component of the ASEAN Communitybuilding. The AUN Charter and the Memorandum of Agreement on the Establishment of the AUN spells out its role and responsibilities to: (i) promote cooperation among ASEAN scholars, academicians and scientists in the region; (ii) develop academic and professional human resources in the region; and (iii) to promote information dissemination among the ASEAN academic community. Through collaborative activities addressing these priorities, the AUN contributes to deepening awareness of regional identity among the young people of the region. The AUN today is widely recognized for its vital role in building a regional pool of expertise that actively contributes to the ASEAN-Community-building through Youth Mobility programmes and exchanges, Academic Collaboration, Standards, Mechanisms, Systems and Policies of Higher Education Collaboration, Course Programme Development and Regional and Global Policy Platforms. In more than a decade of it strategic and operational work, AUN s role has evolved from self-initiated, cost-sharing efforts to empowerment through expanded membership and outward-looking partnerships with institutions and networks of higher learning in several of ASEAN s Dialogue Partner countries. Through these partnerships, ASEAN s Dialogue Partners have developed an appreciation for a sense of shared commitment to the AUN s mission, values, resources and communities. AUN today stands an integral part of ASEAN Community-building, with a clear role to play in the ASEAN Socio-Cultural community process, through its many partnerships for human resource development though higher education. 2
