North Waste Disposal Plant In order to maximize the reusability of energy generated from garbage incineration, high-efficiency generators which run on high-temperature/pressurization of steam are employed. Equipped with an ash melt-solidification facility for utilizing volcanic ash, an oversize garbage disposal facility for collecting resources from oversize garbage, and using the latest technology to minimize pollution, this is a disposal plant which supports a recycling-oriented society. 2. Museum of the Environment Opened in 2008 with the objective of raising environmental awareness, and promoting interest in environmental conservation initiatives. The tram and turf-laying of the tracks Operational since 1914, the tram is still currently used as a primary mode of transport within the city center. Since 2004, turf was laid on the tram tracks in order to combat the heat island effect and improve the aesthetics of the city. Keynote speech Coordinator profile UNEPFI Special Advisor, Mr. Takejirou Sueyoshi (Kagoshima City s environmental advisor) Born 1945, Kagoshima Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo University Department of Economics in 1967, and entered Mitsubishi Bank (now known as Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ). After experiences as the head of New York branch, company director, and president of the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Company (NY), he became the Vice President of Nikko Asset Management in In 2003, he assumed the position of the United Nations Environment Program Financial Initiative (UNEPFI) Special Advisor. He is an international analyst who has appeared on television and given lectures on finance and environmental issues, advocating that businesses which do not incorporate environmental management strategies will be culled. 4 Kagoshima City is located in the southernmost part of the Japanese Archipelago and southern part of Kyushu Island. Its population is about 0.6 million and the city has developed mainly in commercial and service industry. The city acts as an industrial activity hub in southern Kyushu. In tourism industry, the city has abundant and attractive tourist resources. Among those resources are natural landscape represented by the majestic Sakurajima and quiet Kinko Bay, rich food culture, abundant hot springs. About traffic, the city has developed as a transportation hub in southern Kyushu. There are direct flights to Shanghai and Seoul, and foreign cruise ships make a port call at Kagoshima Port. In March 2011, Kyushu Shinkansen (bullet) train began full operation and travel time has drastically shortened. The city expects the interchange of people, goods, information will become more active in the future. Sakurajima, an active volcano, is located just 4km away from city center across the Kinko bay, and it is a symbol of the city. From downtown Kagoshima to Sakurajima, ferries run 24 hours a day and travel time is only 15 minutes. It is impressive to see Sakurajima up close. If it erupts during your stay, it might be a greeting from the volcano Kagoshima is one of the top spa cities in Japan. You can enjoy various types of spring water and almost all spas cost only 360 yen. There are spa facilities from which you can enjoy the view of majestic Sakurajima and quiet Kinko Bay. 4 Kagoshima boasts rich food culture in Japan. Many tourists come from all over Japan to seek specialties of the city. Especially Kurobuta, Imojochu (sake), and ramen noodle are popular among them. Easy to see and understand!
