14 sardinia Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and is situated south of the French Corsica. The regional capital is Cagliari, and other important cities are Sassari, Nuoro, Olbia and Alghero. It has a Mediterranean climate: in summer the temperatures can be very high and dry and the winter is usually mild. It s a very windy region. The prevailing winds are the Mistral and Ponente. The island is famous for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear blue-green sea, without neglecting the outback, with its arid, rocky landscapes and its places of great cultural interest. The Geovillage and Costa Eventi are located on the outskirts of the city of Olbia, which is part of Gallura, in the north-east of the island. 15 gallura The Gallura is a historical and geographical region of Sardinia. It includes the north-eastern part of the island and hosts the Costa Smeralda. Its main centers are: Olbia, Tempio Pausania, Arzachena and La Maddalena. The territory is rich in rock, polished by the wind, the rain and the sea, especially on the coasts. Natural sculptures of bizarre forms such as the Bear near Palau give the Gallura a very original appearance. The natural vegetation consists of Mediterranean maquis shrub land while the outback has a different look, more sheltered from the wind it is characterized by impressive granite outcrops and forests of oak and cork trees. The Costa Smeralda is the recent designation of the coast of Gallura. It is a part of the territory of Arzachena. Born in 1962, by the hand of Prince Karim Aga Khan, the Costa Smeralda Consortium gave considerable thrust to the holiday industry in Sardinia. With its 55 kilometers coast, it is the longest riviera of Italy. It presents coves, long sandy beaches, headlands, islands and great hotel facilities. Its main centers are Porto Cervo, Poltu Quatu, Liscia di Vacca, Capriccioli, Cala di Volpe, Porto Rotondo, that was attributed to it later.
