The programme of events in Maloja regularly includes adventures for the whole family including sledging on the torch-lit run from the Belvedere Tower to the Post Office in Maloja: a fantastic experience that puts a sparkle in everyone s eyes and not just young participants. A 42 kilometre long paradise of cross country skiing trails The 12,000 participants in the Engadine Ski Marathon are also allowed a sparkle in their eyes, as, after successfully completing the 42 kilometre race, they can feel very proud of themselves. The largest and best-known open cross country race in Switzerland will celebrate its 40 th anniversary this winter. The race starts in Maloja and anyone looking to get in some training for this major event can do so on the original trails. For the first time the race can also be made as a semi-marathon of 21 km (Maloja Pontresina). For art lovers and anyone who wants to become one Maloja is known primarily as Segantini s village, since the famous artist Giovanni Segantini ( ) spent the last creative years of his life here. The village pays tribute to its former resident with a number of events and exhibitions and during the summer months, the specially designed Sentiero Segantini is a favourite tourist excursion. During the course of a unique walk, those who are interested in the artist can follow in his footsteps, visiting the places that he particularly loved to paint. The Belvedere Tower, which was built at the end of the 19 th century, is well worth a visit. Today, this observation tower regularly hosts art exhibitions during the summer. Maloja s landmark is closed in the winter, but a short trip is still recommended if only to sample the unique atmosphere under the protection of its lofty walls. Finally a real insider s tip: Snow-shoe outings in Maloja are not to be missed. There are several routes around the village, through the unrivalled Upper Engadine lakeland. Snow-shoeing across the untouched, snow-covered expanse is a magical experience and not just for die-hard winter sports lovers! It s not surprising that Maloja has been crowned the idyllic Engadine snow-shoeing paradise.

2 2/13 Sils Is it the endless width of the valley? The enchanting landscape or the mystical presence of Sils local mountain - the Furtschellas? Who knows? But one thing is certain, that the German author and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche never felt as happy as he did in idyllic Sils Maria. He spent seven summers here between 1881 and 1888, writing some of his most important works. Today, his former residence houses a museum containing his original writings, letters and first editions. A powerful landscape, What fascinated Nietzsche and his famous contemporaries about Sils, can be experienced spectacularly by today s visitors on a horse-drawn sleigh ride as they travel through the picturesque village towards Fextal an untouched, pristine tributary valley with an extraordinarily powerful vibrancy. The valley can also be reached on a gentle winter walk, past the small hamlets of Fex Platta, Fex Crasta and Fex Curtins. Visitors really should visit the mountain church at Fex-Crasta, which houses beautiful 16 th century frescoes. a wide range of winter sports The Furtschellas provides Sils with its own winter sports area. The cable car takes visitors straight to a skiing and snowboarding paradise at a height of 2,800 metres above sea level. Before you start, you can fine tune your technique at the Snow Sports Ski School in Sils, with a wide range of activities including downhill skiing, snowboarding and guided ski-tours, as well as the recently rediscovered technique of telemarking - and when one ski area is not enough, Sils-Furtschellas provides direct access to the Corvatsch. Other winter sports can be enjoyed in Sils. The Muot Marias sports centre has three rinks available for avid curlers, and anyone who wants to try curling for the first time can join a free taster course on a Thursday. Sils regular sledging get-togethers have become a particular favourite. These free sledging trips run through the torch-lit Laret forest, guaranteeing shining eyes and rosy cheeks for young and old alike! and magnificent concerts A highlight for classical music lovers will take place on December 29 th, 2007, when the well-known Engadin Sinfonia symphony orchestra gives its annual guest performance in Sils Maria. Since 1985, their year-end concerts have become a permanent feature of the Engadine cultural calendar. This year the orchestra will be performing works by Antonin Dvoràk and Johannes Brahms with a special appearance by the famous cellist Antonio Meneses, guaranteeing an outstandingly high quality concert.

Snowkiting is the magic word that is currently attracting hoards of adventure lovers, but Silvanaplana also has plenty to offer those who are looking for something more gentle. Is it the speed? The combination of flying and skiing or snowboarding? Or is it the interaction between your own strength and that of the Maloja wind, which makes snowkiting so fascinating? Exciting events The Snow Night, which takes place on the Corvatsch every Friday night, is a special favourite for young partygoers. This winter event is extremely popular, and not just because of the longest illuminated descent in Switzerland, but also because of the varied entertainment programme, which includes snow bars, concerts and live DJ s. A particular attraction is the Stimorol Engadinsnow freeride event on the Corvatsch. The sixth edition of the freeride and big air contest, which will be held this year between January 9 th and 13 th, promises to be fun and action-packed. For four days, the best skiers and snowboarders will test their freeriding skills under the constant gaze of an enthusiastic crowd, who are then free to enjoy night skiing and legendary parties. Other sporting highlights of the winter season include the Chivas Snow Golf Tournament and the Coppa Romana, the largest open air curling tournament in Europe and the curling event par excellence both will be held in January 2008 at the Mulets sports centre. and peaceful days Those who are looking for something quieter will also find what they are looking for in Silvaplana. You will be enchanted by the beauty and mystical aura of the Engadine mountains on your cross country skis, and anyone who would prefer a leisurely winter walk will really enjoy any one of the numerous walking and hiking trails. These trails provide particularly delightful views of the magical winter landscape with its silvery frozen lakes and forests dusted with snow.

Every winter, the international jet set arrives here to enjoy the radiant Engadine sun and the tingling champagne climate. Top class events complete the winter programme, at a height of 1856 metres above sea level. The resort's hotels truly cater to all the sophisticated wishes of their international clientele today representing almost 60% of all the 4 and 5 star guest beds in Engadine St. Moritz. Between January 1 st and 6 th, 2008, the Swiss Bob and Skeleton Championships for both men and women will be held on the Olympic Bob Run, the oldest and only natural ice bob sleigh track in the world. This 1722 metre long track built in 1904 has already been the venue for numerous international competitions including two Olympic Games. On January 19 th and 20 th, 2008, the "Chesa al Parc curling centre will host the 110 th Jackson Cup. The Scottish team sport of curling was played on the continent for the first time in 1881 in St. Moritz of course. At the end of the month, the frozen St. Moritz lake will witness preparations for the Sport of Kings. Between January 24 th and 27 th, 2008, the 24 th Cartier Polo World Cup, one of the most famous polo tournaments in the world, will be held here. The events continue into February 2008 with the traditional White Turf horse racing meeting. Particular highlights include the ski joring race, where skiers are pulled along by thoroughbred racehorses the only race of its kind in the world. On February 2 nd and 3 rd, 2008, visitors can look forward to watching the crème de la crème of international ski racing at the Audi FIS Womens Alpine Ski World Cup. As a diversion to all these sporting highlights, St. Moritz will also be staging its 15 th Gourmet Festival between January 28 th and February 2 nd, 2008, where top international chefs will treat their guests in St. Moritz to exclusive creations, demonstrating that St. Moritz has more to offer than just spectacular sports events.

5 5/13 Celerina The sun queen of St. Moritz, is the nickname for the village of Celerina and with good reason! Since, on the one hand, the village is only a short bus ride away from its cosmopolitan neighbour St. Moritz, with its lifestyle, designer shops and party atmosphere on the doorstep, and on the other hand, enjoys the most hours of sunshine in the Upper Engadine with a total of 1,800 hours a year making it the perfect place to visit and stay for both families and those looking to relax. Celerina has earned a reputation as a particularly family-friendly place, and no wonder, as there are numerous opportunities here for both parents and children to enjoy hours of fun and entertainment. Its facilities include the Center da Sport - the centrally located sports centre and playground with the sunniest ice rink in the whole of Europe -, the Taschainas chair lift which is perfect for children and the Swiss Snow Kids Village, where the youngest children can ski for the first time under the watchful eye of experienced ski instructors. Celerina also offers visitors direct access to the Corviglia-Marguns ski area, which is suitable for both parents and children with experience of winter sports, with its unrivalled pistes and comfortable facilities. A fascination with speed Every year, at the start of the winter, things move fast in the tranquil village of Celerina: Since 1885, the Cresta Run, a 1,200 metre long ice tunnel, has ended here, and every year the exclusively male members of the Cresta Club fly down it on their skeleton toboggans. The club founded by the English is still in British hands today and the whole operation takes place almost exclusively in English. From December to February, there are training sessions or races every day. Anyone who is not fortunate enough to be a member of the exclusive Cresta Club, can still have the opportunity of hearing the wind rushing past their ears in Celerina. On the only natural ice bob sleigh track in the world; the Olympic Bob Run from St. Moritz to Celerina. Those who dare can take a taxi bob run down the 1720 metre long, and also the oldest bob sleigh track in the world. The imposing mountains hold various challenges for mountaineers, including the King of the Eastern Alps, the Piz Bernina. Whether you love ice climbing, ski touring or snow shoeing the heart of every mountain lover surely beats faster in Pontresina. Anyone with such lofty peaks in mind, needs the necessary infrastructure, which is why the mountaineering school in Pontresina is the largest of its kind in Switzerland. The winter sport of your choice Anyone who prefers to look at the mountains from a safe distance, can enjoy a varied range of activities in Pontresina. The village is one of Switzerland s major curling centres. During the winter season, curling tournaments are held regularly on the stunningly situated Roseg natural ice rink. Another sporting highlight is the Glüna Plaina night time descent. From 7.30 p.m. on nights when there is a full moon, you can enjoy a particularly beautiful descent on the Diavolezza. The brightly lit mountain station and the white golden light of the moon show skiers and snowboarders the route to a friendly evening meal in the Diavolezza mountain restaurant and then back to the valley. A magical experience that is not to be missed. A highlight of the year is the Engadine Ski Marathon. This traditional cross country skiing event will be held for the 40 th time in To celebrate this anniversary, and for the first time, a half marathon will be held alongside the main event to open up the Engadiner to a larger number of participants. The finishing line for this 21 kilometre event will be in Pontresina. Culture and relaxation in equal measure Pontresina has special attractions for culture lovers and for those looking to relax, including places of cultural interest like the Sta. Maria mountain church or the typical Engadine houses with their unmistakeable decoration, forming a striking contrast to modern buildings such as the Saratz design hotel. The Alpine Museum provides visitors with interesting information on summer and winter mountaineering, from the days of the pioneers and the conquest of the Bernina massif to the development of modern mountaineering. Pontresina also caters for those in need of rest and relaxation, for example, on a horse-drawn carriage ride through the wildly romantic Roseg valley or at the new Bellavita spa. With a wide range of spas and well-being packages, a 75 metre long flume and various children s play areas, visitors feel equally at home here as locals do. Thanks to a range of massages, various saunas and steam baths, hydrotherapy pools and a relaxation zone with an open fire, stresses and strains are banished.

7 7/13 Samedan In the narrow streets of Samedan, one splendid Engadine house almost touches the next and all of them are covered with wonderful decoration. San Peter church, which sits on a hill overlooking the village, and the evangelical parish church, which is one of the most beautiful churches in the canton of Graubünden, are also worth a visit. Culture as part of everyday life It is not only the historic buildings that demonstrate Samedan s connection with its past. Traditional Upper Engadine heritage is part of everyday life here. Puter, a Romansch dialect, is strongly rooted in Samedan and is heavily officially promoted here, with children from kindergarten to the final year of schooling being taught in two languages since the year 2000, and with beginners, conversation, intensive and holiday courses being offered for both new residents of Samedan and visitors. It is not possible to imagine Samedan village life without the Schlitteda, a sleigh ride organised every winter by the Giuventüna (the young people of the village). This tradition, where the young men take their sweethearts on a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snowy landscape, was once the most important event of the winter for couples wanting to get married. Today it is a colourful public festival for both locals and visitors, where the traditional Engadine attitude to life is celebrated. A particularly important Samedan institution is the Chesa Planta. This 16 th century Patrician s house is home to a very interesting museum devoted to the everyday Patrician culture of the 18 th and 19 th centuries, as well as a Romansch library and a cultural archive, housing the widest variety of documents relating to the culture of the Upper Engadine. Winter walks (not just) for philosophers In addition to its rich village and cultural life, Samedan is also the perfect starting point for winter sports of all kinds. Above the village lies an easy ski slope with a drag lift and, at the end of the day, advanced winter sports lovers can enjoy the descent from Corviglia/Marguns to Samedan. To the South East of the village is the Muottas Muragl, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Upper Engadine with a 4.2 kilometre long toboggan run. The well cared for Philosophers Route runs along the sweeping high plateau, at a height of 2456 metres above sea level, introducing winter walkers to Western thinking from Socrates to Sartre. On the subject of lofty heights With Engadine Airport at 1,707 metres above sea level, Samedan has the highest airport in Europe. The site is home to a base for REGA - the Swiss Air Rescue Service as well as Air Grischa AG and the headquarters of local company Heli Bernina AG and is also the base of Air Engiadina. Around 20,000 take-offs and landings are recorded every year.

8 8/13 Bever Small but beautiful! Thanks to its delightful Engadine charm, the village of Bever, with just 700 inhabitants, is a real tourist gem. Anyone who comes here, discovers one thing above all else: rest, relaxation and plenty of time for themselves. Surrounded by pure unadulterated nature, you can come here to rest and leave your everyday cares behind you. Visitors are delighted by the healthy climate, the majestic larch forests and the stunning mountain landscape all in front of the Crasta Mora, Bever s local mountain, which closes off the village from the North with its jagged black outline. It s no wonder that its name in Romansch means deep black mountain ridge. Thanks to its position, Bever is just about perfect for holidays as a couple. A walk through the village lanes, filled with a number of beautifully built Engadine houses, provides an initial impression of the special charm of this Upper Engadine village. A leisurely winter walk or cross country skiing trip allows you to discover the Bever valley with its unspoilt and fascinating landscape and Swiss Pine forests dusted with snow. Romance is also on the menu at the Romantik Hotel Chesa Salis. The Engadine Patrician house dating from the 1590s lies in the heart of the historic village centre of Bever, guaranteeing magical charm and fine cuisine, from chef Ueli Marty, who treated gourmet diners on the Engadin- Tram in Zurich to an exquisite three course menu in September At the Chesa Salis, the top chef and his team prepare local and international dishes for their guests, providing a special culinary experience rounded off by one of the 450 or more fine wines from the cellar of the Chesa Salis. Sport and fun in the snow for everyone If you would prefer sporting adventures and winter fun on the snow to relaxation and romance, Bever has exactly what you need. Winter walkers, in particular, will be impressed by the well-maintained hiking trails. Bever also has an illuminated natural ice rink and beautifully prepared cross country tracks, through the Bever valley to Spinas or around the village with links to the cross country marathon trails, and the daily sports programme is extremely varied. The nearby winter sports areas of Corviglia/Marguns, Corvatsch/Furtschellas, Diavolezza/Lagalb and Zuoz can be reached comfortably and quickly on the Engadine bus. Another highlight awaits visitors nearby: the best known toboggan run in Europe, from Preda down to Bergün, can be reached from Bever in less than an hour, thanks to the perfect scheduling of the Rhaetian railway timetable. The toboggan descent along the 6 kilometre long Albula Pass road is a lightning fast experience for both young and old alike and is illuminated until p.m.

9 9/13 La Punt Chamues-ch La Punt Chamues-ch has something special for families: a so-called "Reka Family Pack" is included when renting certain holiday homes. This package includes various reduced entry tickets (for example to the recently opened family spa in Zernez) and holiday attractions designed especially for children, plus one evening s babysitting per week allowing parents to spend some time on their own. A varied range of winter sports The surrounding ski areas of Zuoz and Corviglia/Marguns are quickly and easily reached by train or the Engadine Bus and entertainment is also available locally. The idyllic Patrician village of La Punt Chamues-ch offers families something special; for example, the Müsella children s ski lift, where little ones can try their turns on a real piste for the first time, in bright sunshine under beautiful blue skies. They will be looked after by experienced ski instructors from the Zuoz/La Punt Ski and Swiss Snowboard School, who can also accompany adults on their skiing and snowboarding adventures the school can also organise snow shoe outings, ski touring or telemarking sessions. Variety is added to the winter sports programme by various cross country marathon tracks, including the one from Punt Muragl to La Punt Chamues-ch, Nordic winter walking courses and curling taster sessions, which are organised free of charge every Monday at 8 p.m. on the natural ice rink. and a varied programme of alternative activities You don t need any special prior sporting experience to enjoy sledging on the Albula pass, which is closed to traffic during the winter. During the day, non-sports people enjoy the fast runs through the snow covered landscape, but training will definitely pay off when, on February 10 th, 2008, the 6 th Engadine Open Sledging Competition will take place on the Albula pass. One week earlier, on February 2 nd, Carnival will be celebrated in La Punt Chamues-ch, and one event that is definitely worth seeing is the children s masked ball on the ice field in La Punt, held during the afternoon. On that day, even adults dust off their most beautiful, scary or original masks and join the hustle and bustle of carnival. Everyone dresses brightly again on 1 st March, when schoolchildren from La Punt celebrate Chalandamarz - traditional Engadine New Year. Boys and girls go together from house to house, ringing the largest cow bells they can carry. The winter is driven out with springtime songs and ringing bells and money that is collected is usually used later to pay for school trips or the Chalandamarz ball.

10 10/13 Madulain An oasis of tranquillity that s how Madulain can best be described. With just 180 inhabitants or so, Madulain is the smallest political district in the Upper Engadine. But this shouldn t give you the impression that Madulain is merely a tiny, sleepy village quite the opposite. Madulain is the perfect place for families with children and active winter sports lovers, to spend unforgettable holidays. On the one hand, this village, which lies between La Punt and Zuoz, offers various opportunities to spend time where you are, and, on the other hand, provides easy access by car or public transport to nearby ski areas including Corviglia/Marguns, Corvatsch/Furtschellas, Diavolezza/Lagalb and Zuoz. Ideal for families, perfect for winter sports lovers Families are particularly fond of the Reka Engiadina holiday home. This typical Engadine house contains 16 comfortable holiday apartments and offers fun and relaxation for the whole family with a children s playground, well equipped playrooms and sauna facilities. The house is located close to the public ice rink, where tourists and locals can enjoy playing ice hockey or practicing a few spins. The 1.5 kilometre long toboggan run in the Via Vallatscha promises an afternoon of fun and enjoyment for the whole family. Winter sports lovers will find a link in Madulain to a network of beautifully maintained cross country skiing tracks. Here, in the peaceful and idyllic winter landscape, you truly feel at one with nature. The Engiadina Nordic cross country school has a team of local winter sports experts, world cup racers and Olympic medallists, all waiting to let you in to the secrets of classic cross country and skating techniques. Ski touring courses and preparation courses for the Engadine Ski Marathon are also available. Awe-inspiring fortifications and centuries-old walls Anyone who is interested in history and architecture, or simply looking for somewhere to go on a pleasant winter walk, should head off towards the Guardaval ruins above Madulain. Bishop Volkard of Neuburg had this magnificent castle built between 1237 and 1251, and from 1377 until 1382, the Upper Engadine Planta family were its custodians. Even today, this, the largest castle in the Upper Engadine, provides a superb view of the landscape below. The village centre of Madulain is particularly attractive, with its well maintained typical Engadine houses. A walk through the narrow streets past centuries-old walls is enjoyable even at the coldest time of the year, and while you are out in the fresh air, why not visit the Church of San Batrumieu? The key to this church, built between 1507 and 1510 and renovated in 1995, can be obtained from the Madulain Tourist Information.

11 11/13 Zuoz Mirror, mirror on the wall, which is the fairest village in the entire country? Admittedly, these are not the exact lines from Grimm s fairytale, but for many visitors and locals it is clear that Zuoz would win any Beauty Competition for Upper Engadine villages. The picturesque Patrician village with its historic village centre has cast its spell on sports fans and culture lovers alike. The imposing village square with its impressive historic buildings is well worth seeing. The former Crusch Alva Inn built in 1,500 a.d., the San Luzi church with its three glass windows two of which were designed by Augusto Giacometti and the wonderfully ornate Planta houses and the Planta tower are all testament to the village s eventful past. An event from this past is regularly revived at the beginning of March every year, when Chalandamarz (traditional Engadine New Year) is celebrated. This traditional Engadine ritual for driving out winter is an especially large festival in Zuoz. It s no wonder then that Chalandamarz in Zuoz is seen as the most spectacular in Upper Engadine. Winter fun for sports enthusiasts Can't wait to get going? There are a lot of people like you in Zuoz! With the spacious Pizzet region, Zuoz has a ski area that is highly recommended for both beginners and experienced winter sports lovers. Families are well catered for here, and the new four man Chastlatsch chairlift is even child-friendly; it can safely be used by children from the age of four without the need for an adult to accompany them. A children s ski school and a ski kindergarten complete the package for the youngest winter sports lovers. Are you looking for even more winter highlights? Whether you prefer the classic or skating technique, the Engadin cross country school and the Sur En cross country centre have everything a cross country skier could wish for. Anyone who prefers walking, can join the well-known mountain guide and Upper Engadine specialist, Gerhard Franz, on a winter walk to explore the region. Lovers of flat ice sports like ice hockey and ice skating will particularly appreciate the Purtum ice rink, where curling taster sessions are held every Wednesday from 2 p.m. A particular highlight of the winter programme in Zuoz is the Jump Contest at the Pizzet Restaurant. This top-level event for young up-and-coming snowboarders and freestyle skiers will be held at the end of January as part of the Southside Tour established in It's thrilling to see the moves that the freestyle skiers and snowboarders attempt, in order to persuade the jury and the public that they really are talented. Delight for art lovers For art lovers, Zuoz has two special must sees : With the Tschudi gallery set up by Ruedi Tschudi and Elsbeth Bisig and the Monica De Cardenas gallery, Zuoz has two galleries exhibiting contemporary art of the highest quality.

12 12/13 S-chanf Cinuos-chel It s quite clear that S-chanf is primarily associated with one major winter event: the Engadine Ski Marathon, ending in the idyllic hamlet. However, S-chanf and the neighbouring hamlet of Cinuos-chel are much more than just a resting place for exhausted cross country skiers. After Zernez, S-chanf is the second Upper Engadine "Gateway to the Swiss National Park. A walk or a horse carriage ride to the Varusch park lodge is a special treat even during the winter. It is open from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. in the winter and offers visitors culinary delicacies from the Engadine region in a unique atmosphere. A thrilling end to the old year Everything will be festive at the end of the year, on December 29 th, 2007, when the Gospeltrain Felsberg, a gospel choir with 140 members aged between 15 and 84 years old, will give its first concert in Engadine at the reform church in Zernez. The choir, which was formed in 1992, is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and thrills its audiences with uplifting gospel songs and spirituals.
