4 TOUR CHRISTIAN ROME (3 h) ** FREE SALE ** The first stop is Esquiline Hill where our guide will show you some of the treasures inside the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, before continuing by coach to see the Holy Staircase and the Lateran Palace. Visit the Basilica of San Giovanni, the cathedral of Rome (inside visit). Then proceed along the Ancient Appian Way, passing the Chapel of Domine Quo Vadis before arriving at the Catacombs, the ancient underground cemeteries and first hiding places of the Christians. A visit to either the Catacombs of San Callisto, Santa Domitilla or San Sebastiano is included, depending on seasonal conditions. The tour will end with a view of the Baths of Emperor Caracalla. 5 TOUR FULL DAY CAPRI (13 h) ** FREE SALE ** The island of Capri, situated in the Gulf of Naples and surrounded by an emerald and turquoise sea, is often called the pearl of the Mediterranean. Leaving Rome in a southerly direction motor along the Highway of the Sun crossing the fertile Roman countryside and the area known as Castelli Romani. Approximately halfway along the highway you will be able to see the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino, noted for the famous battle and its complete destruction during the Second World War. Arriving in Naples you will board a hydrofoil for the 45 minute crossing to Marina Grande on Capri. Minibuses are then used for a panoramic drive to reach Anacapri, situated at 280 metres above sea level from where you will have a wonderful view of the Bay of Naples. After lunch in a local restaurant, you will have some free time to take unforgettable photographs and purchase local products before returning to Marina Grande to board the boat back to Naples. Entering the port of Naples, don't miss the opportunity to admire the splendid Maschio Angioino (a fortress dating back to the 12th century), the Certosa of San Martino and the Royal Palace. After disembarking you will then take the coach for the return journey to Rome, approx. 3 hours. Return to the vicinity of your hotel. Leaving Rome in a northerly direction, driving along the Tiber Valley, we reach ORVIETO, a small town of Etruscan origins where we stop to admire the magnificent 14th century cathedral, a masterpiece of gothic architecture. The tour continues driving along the Tiber Valley, passing settlements of Etruscan origins in the magnificent landscape of central Italy. This is the land of some of Italy's best known D.O.C. (quality controlled) wines, which include Orvieto, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. At around reach Assisi, built at the foot of Mount Subasio. Here, during a guided stroll through the lanes of this historic town, you will see the Church of St. Claire, St Francis' birthplace, his childhood home, Townhall Square with its People s Palace, Roman Temple dedicated to Minerva and of course the Town hall itself. Visit St. Francis Basilica, close to the ancient city walls, with its magnificent frescoes painted between the 12th and 14th centuries. 9 TOUR HALF DAY THE ANCIENT OSTIA (4 h) Leaving Rome and following the road leading to the sea, we'll reach Ostia, the Roman city of the Imperial age whose Latin name Ostium means mouth of the river, reflecting its position along the Tiber river. Ostia was founded around the 4th century BC by King Anco Marzio and became the harbour of Rome around which, throughout the following centuries, a flourishing trade and business centre developed. Following the Barbarian invasions, the decline of Ostia began when the port was abandoned and became silted up. The archaeological excavations undertaken at the beginning of the XIX century have brought the ancient city back to light. During your walk through the ruins, your guide will tell you something about the cultural and social life of this interesting commercial settlement. During your visit, you'll discover the Terme di Nettuno where you can admire the beautiful black and white mosaics representing Neptune and Amphitrite, the theatre built by Agrippa and the Forum which formed the centre of the city. Here you will discover the principle public buildings, Il Capitolium and the Temple of Rome and Augustus, the Basilica and the large thermal baths. Near the forum square you will also find the House of Diana and the Thermopolium, an ancient Roman bar with a marble counter and a fresco depicting the fruit and foodstuffs that were sold there. At the end of Via dei Dipinti, the Museo Ostiense displays some of the ancient sculptures and mosaics found among the ruins. Departing Rome and heading north crossing the Tiber valley, we reach CORTONA. This town has changed little since the Middle Ages. More recently depicted in the Oscar winning film La Vita è Bella and described by American novelist Frances Mayes in Under the Tuscan Sun, Cortona is enjoying a renewed popularity. Here, we stroll through the historic centre, discovering hidden corners and absorbing the atmosphere of this picturesque town. After a drive along the shores of LAKE TRASIMENO, lunch will be served in a typical countryside restaurant. In the afternoon, driving through the gentle hills of the CHIANTI REGION, we reach the hilltop town of MONTEPULCIANO. The deep ruby red wine, Vino Nobile of this town is famous the world over. It is here then, that we visit one of its oldest wine cellars, carved out of the tufo rock, and discover some of the secrets of winemaking and of course taste the final result. 11 - GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS AGREEMENT BOOKING - CONFIRMATION All tours have to be booked with Gartour by (gartour@gartour.net or through our web site Some tours/excursions are on Free Sale basis (with automatic confirmation), while other tours/excursion are On Request and can be considered valid only after our booking confirmation. Upon confirmation we will advise whether free pick-up service from hotel is possible (if so, we will advise pick-up time) or if clients will have to make their own way to meeting point to join the tour. All the rates indicated are in and intended per person. PICK-UP IN HOTEL / PRESENTATION AT MEETING POINT For those tours including pick-up from hotel, clients have to be in the lobby of hotel waiting for tour representative on time. Then clients will be accompanied to the meeting point and shown the particular bus or guide for their specific tour in their language (please note that all tours may be performed in more than one language). IMPORTANT: At certain times there may be unforseen delays in the arranged pick-up times but we kindly request clients to wait in the hotel lobby. For those tours not including pick-up from hotel, we ask to all clients to be at the designated meeting points at the advised time in order participate (usually meeting time is minutes prior departure). No reimbursement wil be granted to clients who is not at the indicated place of pick-up/departure at the time established. Similarly, no reimbursement will be granted to clients who depart the tour prematurely, lose contact with the guide or who do not complete the tour/excursion. CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS It may happen that, due to operational difficulties or reasons beyond our control (travel conditions, strikes, changes in opening hours, closure of museums, delays or other unforseen circumstances) tour providers may be forced to change or cancel a tour. Tour companies reserve the right to cancel a tour without prior notice due to reasons beyond their control with the only obligation of reimbursing the cost of the tour. In this case, clients may claim reimbursement only of the amount paid. In the event of unforessen schedule or itinerary changes beyond control, tour companies reserve the right to provide no reimbursement. LIABILITY Gartour and partnering tour companies are not responsible for any loss of personal valuables, luggage or objects during excursions, or for any loss of personal items which are left on tour coaches, or for any damage casued by third parties to personal items during the tour. We are not also responsible for partial or total closures of museums, monuments and churches, delays or irregularities caused by third parties. Then an alternative itinerary and visits to other museums wil be proposed, without any variation to the established tariff, and clients will be informed prior to departure. In the event of unforeseen schedule or itinerary changes beyond control, tour companies reserve the right to not grant any reimbursements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND NOTES Please note that Italian laws do not permit selling alcoholic beverage to teens under 18 years of age; therefore clients under-age will be served non-alcoholic beverages. We regret that not all the tours are accessible to guests with wheelchairs or physical impairments requiring special assistance. Please let us know in advance of any special needs or clients' impaired mobility in order to determine whether participation in a particular tour is possible. COMPLAINTS Any client complaint must be communicated to Gartour in writing within and no later than 10 working days after the date of the tour. Thereafter Gartour is not obliged to review complaints and no reimbursements will be approved.
