Not to mention it s recognized by the Smithsonian as an Affiliate Museum which is an extremely rare honor and speaks well of its pristine collection. 2 Hershey Harrisburg Region Group Planner HERSHEY GARDENS & CONSERVATORY What began as a request from Mr. Hershey for a small garden of roses now spans more than 20 acres of breathtaking flower beds, tree groves, and shrub lined pathways overlooking the town of Hershey. Being here when it s in bloom is a beautiful sight to behold, but its 14,000-square foot conservatory and tropical Butterfly Atrium makes it a year-round must-see. TRÖEGS INDEPENDENT BREWING Sometimes the true story of a region is in its flavor! Its original owner was John Harris, Jr., Harrisburg s founder and namesake, and was later owned by Simon Cameron, notable statesman and Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln. PA NATIONAL FIRE MUSEUM The Pennsylvania National Fire Museum turns the clock back more than 200 years to show how men once used hand-drawn equipment to save burning buildings. Follow the evolution of firefighting equipment as you wander the museum s straightforward exhibits into today s century. Two floors of fire history await you in a fully restored 1899 Victorian fire house. NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM Discover the whole story of the Civil War as told from both sides of the battlefield, depicting this restless chapter of our nation s history. The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg has two floors of beautiful exhibits, with thousands of three-dimensional relics including uniforms, weapons, and personal effects of the fallen soldiers. The mansion was built c by John Harris, Jr., pioneer trader and ferry operator and one of the founders of Harrisburg. In 1863, it was purchased by Simon Cameron, Pennsylvania politician, U.S. Senator, and Lincoln s first Secretary of War. Cameron transformed the Georgian house into a stylish Victorian mansion and lived there until his death in The mansion is furnished with period pieces, some belonging to both Harris and Cameron.
