It is primarily a North Woods Wilderness and water based park. Visitors come to hike, backpack, boat, canoe, kayak, scuba dive, and fish. The island offers 165 miles of trails, 36 campgrounds, 51 miles of canoe routes, 10 major shipwrecks, and over 336 miles of scenic Lake Superior shoreline. M drop. 7 - Manganese Falls From US Hwy. 41 in Copper Harbor turn south at the Community Building onto Lake Manganese Road and go approximately.7 miles. 21 BIRDING/ROCK HOUND Keweenaw Birding Boreal forests, mixed woodlands, wetlands, inland lakes and Lake Superior make bird watching a year-round activity. 334 species have been officially documented living/visiting our area. The Michigan Nature Association, The Nature Conservancy and Audubon Sanctuaries as well as state and locals parks have well-maintained, marked trails that are good places to start. Whether you re a seasoned veteran or anxious beginner, grab those binoculars and experience a truly northern birding experience. BIRDING/ROCKHOUNDING Spring Hawk Migration Migrating birds, some from as far away as South America, move up the Keweenaw via the Central Migration Flyway. Brockway Mountain is the place to observe the spectacular spring migration. Over 16 species of hawks, eagles, and falcons passing in numbers upwards of 20,000 have been recorded. Eagles are heavy early in the season, often the raptors observed in March. Things ramp up in April and depending on weather, peak viewing time is usually around the beginning of May. The Keweenaw Underwater reserve Due to its location on the Lake s south shore, it has often been a catcher s mitt for lost ships. Because of its location and extensive mining and settlement activities, shipwrecks and artifacts are scattered along the coast. Eagle River, Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor all host a variety of shipwrecks dating to the 1800 s. The dive sites are not generally buoyed. Visiting divers should be prepared to locate them. The Keweenaw eninsula is also home to unique geological formations that supplement shipwreck diving. One good area to visit is Esrey ark located about halfway between Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor. This roadside park is an easy shore dive and a great place to look for agates, copper and other unique Copper Country treasures. Lake Superior is home to 140 shipwrecks. However only 40 have been found and identified.
