1 March, 2009 MMHLA Metropolitan Memphis Hotel & Lodging Association MMH&LA - the source for information and education, and the advocacy voice for the hotel and lodging industry in the metropolitan Memphis area. Stars of the Industry Registration form inside! No, we re not bringing any bed bugs to the next luncheon meeting. But there will be a dog. Hotel Maintenance Board Meeting Tues., April 7, 8:30 a.m. Hotel Maintenance! Wednesday March 18 Radisson Airport Registration, 11:30 a.m. Luncheon, 12 noon Find out how a dog can keep your property free of bed bug and mold at the luncheon Wednesday, March 18, at the Radisson Hotel Airport. Join us Wednesday, March 18, at the Radisson Airport, 2411 Winchester Rd., for what promises to be a lively presentation on a number of aspects of Hotel Maintenance, including a live demonstration by one very clever - and helpful - dog. The dog joins us courtesy of Dog Inspectors LLC, the first Tennessee company to use trained, certified detection dogs to find mold and bed bugs in commercial and residential buildings. Just like police dogs sniff out drugs and bombs, Dog Inspectors detection dogs find bed bugs and mold in places traditional inspectors can never get to. Why bring in a dog to do a man s job? Detector dogs make it possible to thoroughly search a room without stripping it down or pulling the baseboards from the wall. Sound good? Come to the luncheon to see how it s done and to get a little more information. (You can also visit Besides the interesting and informative presentation and demonstration on canine bed bug and mold detection, a representative of the National Hotel Motel Engineering Association - The Make It Happen People - will be on hand with information on their organization: general and how-to-join info, as well as information on their certification process. 5 Bob Mercer President, MMHLA From the President: From the Industry Update to the Industry Summit, MMHLA Delivers the Info You Need When Disaster Strikes SERVPRO Strikes Back! Servpro Provides 24 Hour Emergency Fire and Water Restoration Mold Remediation Odor Removal Bio-Hazard Removal Carpet Cleaning Duct Cleaning What a great turnout for a great event. Industry events like this is what the MMHLA does best. I m talking of course about the Industry Update. All hats off to Chuck Pinkowski and his team for rounding up a pair of terrific speakers. Dr. Bruce Scherr delivered a timely and informative presentation on the current state of the economy and how we should deal with it. Arch Y. Stokes was right on the money with his comments on the all-important Card Check issue. And, in light of it, how important it is to take care of our staff. (It s always important to take care of your staff - would you let a member of your family down?) As I said: great industry events is one of the things MMHLA does best. Because, if anything could be better and more informative than the Industry Update, it s the annual Industry Summit: more speakers, great panels, timely issues. Look for the 2009 Summit to absolutely soar! With Lawrence Geller, President & CEO of Strategic Hotels & Resorts, delivering the keynote address, as well as speakers and panelists like: Joe Martin, AHLA Chairman & owner of Stillwater Hospitality; Steve Joyce, President & CEO of Choice Hotels International; Isaac Collazo, Vice President of Performance Planning & Strategy, HG; and Liam Brown, Executive Vice President, Lodging Development, Marriott International. And those are just the ones lined up now. There ll be more. No, it s not too early to start making your plans. Is this a great association or what?
