Las Vegas, Nevada. ^ Return to Table of Contents Biographical Note Newspaper writer, educator, and historian Elton Garrett war born in St. Joseph, Missouri in He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington in In 1929 he left his job at the Seattle Post Intelligencer and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to become the editor of the Las Vegas Age. In 1931 he started work at the Boulder City Journal in Boulder City, Nevada, and in 1933 became Vice Principal for the Boulder City Public Schools. He was Principal for the Boulder City Public Schools from 1938 to 1942, and then he went to the Boulder City News as News Editor. He married Madelaine G. Elwell in Page 3-

4 Garrett Junior High School in Boulder City, Nevada was named after Garrett, who was a tireless advocate for higher education in Southern Nevada. In 1944 he lobbied for the establishment of a University of Nevada branch in Clark County, and from 1955 to 1959 helped spearhead the legislation that established Nevada Southern University (the predecessor of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas). He also helped establish the Desert Research Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada as a research campus of the Nevada System of Higher Education in Additionally, Garrett was an avid local historian who collected memorabilia and photographs of Southern Nevada and the Hoover (Boulder) Dam construction project. His extensive collection was donated his materials to the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association and the Department of Special Collections at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Garrett was also an active member of the Boulder City community, and he was part of several organizations, including the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce, Clark County Service Federation, Clark County Democratic Convention, Nevada Convention Committee, and the Clark County Legislative Council. In 1976 he was nominated for the Distinguished Nevadan of the Year Award.
